How many of you think Amber is not banned user TWS pretending to be a little girl (or woman with kids, whichever)?
It's obviously him, right? I mean, even if we're not going to do anything about it, it's fucking funny, right?
Come on.

What are the worst case scenarios where liberals and conservatives take power?
I ask because I see some intelligent conservatives on here with possibly good cases against some liberal ideas. I mean, not sure either how good, but at least I'm seeing reasoning applied. I can see that they might have beliefs as to the genuine good of certain policies.
I ask because I see some intelligent conservatives on here with possibly good cases against some liberal ideas. I mean, not sure either how good, but at least I'm seeing reasoning applied. I can see that they might have beliefs as to the genuine good of certain policies.
But I haven't ever seen a conservative worry about what conservatism is at large. Liberals do. And which probably makes it harder for them to hear when conservatives have good points.
I think it's good personal politics, especially given a two-party system, to consider the broader implications of your party's ideology. This means acknowledging worst-case scenarios, understanding who and what sort of people might be empowered or emboldened, and just generally recognising potential negative outcomes.
To start, honestly, I think liberals are fairly harmless. Feel free to disagree.

I asked chatgpt to help me write it because I'm lazy:
That's probably more or less what I wanted to say.
Thoughts?
I find conservatives are far more likely to lose composure or "crack" than liberals because liberals stand steadfast on a pillar of humanity. And it amuses me.

Below are responses regarding the current state of the conversation on Dart:
oro:
I think my opinion is pretty well advertised at this point. I do think that our collective tolerance of a high volume of hate speech targeting minorities is a drag on our site's image as a home for rational discourse and a giant KEEP OUT sign for exactly the kind of academic or competive debaters to which this site is supposed to appeal. Instead of hosting a place where speech and reason can be refined as an improvement to democratic soicety, we're babysitting the sad compulsions of a small number of low information antisocials with nothing better to do all day than to entertain themselves with the harm they inflict on strangers. I think we've all learned the tough way that such individuals always believe they are victims of society and culture and nothing reinforces their victimization narrative quite as effectively as the enforcement of rules. The behavior is meant to provoke punishment which in turn reinforces the narrative of persecution. As a liberal, I want to encourage the free expression of opinion, even dismaying opinion, even fake opinion. As a moderator, I want to improve the atmosphere and intellect of this site but I believe the most effective means is probably not a more rigid interpretation of the code of conduct. The most effective means I know is posts exactly like this- long time DARTers speaking up about the harm that anti-social, anti-democratic, anti-intellectual speech inflicts on a democratic society which is the only kind of society that upholds free speech and fair debate.
SkepticalOne:
Consistent and extreme voices can cause harm to a site. Is that happening here? Well, I agree with OP, DART compares negatively to the site it emulates. I think there is an argument to be made that some users intentionally rely on heavy rhetoric, propaganda, lies, dishonest tactics, etc. all having the effect of killing an honest exchange and comparison of ideas and ideologies.
Barney:
would any of us have stayed or got caught if the mood of DDO then was what DART is today?I’ll admit that I would not. While there certainly were plenty of assholes shitting all over the place in DDO, I was always confident the normal people outnumbered them by a wide margin; and there were dicks like Imabench around fucking the assholes.Plus when I joined DDO I was in university, needing lots of writing practice.…I’ll freely admit I’d prefer to just be rid of anyone I consider to be morally intolerable. From there it’s be a slippery slope to banning people I find intellectually intolerable (which is to say utter morons and gaslighters).I of course rarely put bans in place (aside from the countless ad bots, which are unworthy of being mentioned in the public log). I try to moderate based on the will of the site, with only limited attempts to manipulate the site zingiest (pushing legibility to replace spelling and grammar as an example).…I should mention that this site doesn’t have true freedom of speech, nor should it. However, we must not let it devolve into an echo chamber either. We need room for controversial opinions, as disagreements are core to our value proposition. IMHO, striking the right balance should be the near-term goal.
whiteflame:
I think we have some general agreement going on here. I think you guys could start with deleting all those ugly threads in the Society board.Similar to Barney, I'm not fond of the direction this site has gone, but there's a limit to how we can (or should) intervene based on the existing rules of the site. Deleting all those threads requires a basis that either exists in the current rules of the site or would be added to those rules. I agree, I've got problems with a lot of those threads, and I suspect that yes, they are having some effect on people considering joining the site and/or staying here. I've got my issues with certain users as well. That doesn't mean I'm going to start removing those threads or banning those people. As they exist, I don't think the rules disallow the kind of posts that are being made, and I'd like to be sure that if we choose to expand those rules, we do so carefully.
Wylted:
He is also right about the site being held back because it is being dominated by varying levels of bigotry. Don't get me wrong. People like Roosevelt are also very harmful to the site, but he is just a different flavor of bigot than those on the right here. Also I am not using bigot in a negative way and making a value judgement.I am saying that when the site is nothing but these extreme positions than there really isn't much to debate. Bigots should be welcome here, but once they reach above 20% of the site it kind of ruins the experience.People like Roosevelt and TWS should never be welcome on the site but with a more mature membership their threads would be ignored and they would just leave anyway.
Before we get down to MEEPs or however we're going to do this, I think this post warrants an immediate ban: https://www.debateart.com/forum/topics/8938-floyd-and-the-fatal-effects-of-fentanyl-when-mixed-with-other-illegal-substances?page=2&post_number=59 We can decide on if we'll let him back or whatever, but that post is vile. Dunno how he got away with that in the first place.

Just wondering what people think here, seems a conversation that's never had. oro touched on it here some little bit: https://www.debateart.com/forum/topics/9357-stay-away-from-black-people-scott-adams?page=1&post_number=3
It seems to me that this site is going the way of Stormfront or 4chan or whatever dumb as shit site and is gathering a userbase of fairly unpalatable people intent on racism and transphobia and whatever other weird uninteresting shit. That is regrettable. DDO was a vibrant place, fairly devoid of this stuff, and so kept lots of interesting people. Isn't that something we're interested in here? There are certain users here that bring down the mood, or flavour or outlook as oro writes, of the website and that's bad for us for what this website could be. There was a point in time on DDO where there was new and interesting and not at all antagonistic users arriving every single day. And some of them have crossed over to here. But would any of us have stayed or got caught if the mood of DDO then was what DART is today?
I'm glad to see oro become a mod. But I want a wartime mod. I have no interest in playing house with a bunch of degenerates.

So I was thinking forum post count is a bit of an abstraction away from real life. Word count however is something we see in a whole lot of places.
I wrote a script to get word count for people's forum posts. It's not exactly correct. I'm only splitting on spaces, so words split by forward slashes or colons will get by. Also, I suck at web development and the only response I could get from this place was html, so that was a pain. (Was gonna do debates and debate comments and questions too until I realised how much of a pain it was.)
RationalMadman has written 983,946 words on the DebateArt forums. That's roughly equivalent to 14 theses or 11 novels, or the entire Harry Potter series.
That's fun, right.

I can't think of anything that's more pseudoscience than the idea of instinct. I mean there's some parts that are obviously instinct or something just baked into whatever creatures: baby turtles running for ocean immediately after being born; generations of butterflies taking turns flying over and back between places; salmon, whatever they get up to. List goes on. And some creatures aren't much more than automata for sure. But there's so much else that sounds total bullshit. Social and solitary creatures for example. Polar bears living in conditions where food is incredibly scarce, forced apart for a chance at better hunting and because in hunger cannibalism is not unknown. Lions in the savannah, pushed together by all the other big monsters, elephants, crocodiles, hippos, other lions. Tigers solitary for no need of each other, kings of their jungle, their only competition being other tigers. All things that make a whole lot of sense. If you put humans in these animals' positions, we'd do the same of cleverness. But for the animals it's instinct. Then in captivity polar bears and tigers are plenty social. Some instincts.
We observed some crazy shit in nature and took an idea in it and applied it needlessly across the board. The idea also hinders adaptability massively.

First of all, I'm drunk. But I'm also inspired. But then again, I have work in the morning, so don't expect too much.
But I wonder where it comes to certain individuals. Like, some of you right wingers are obviously decent people. But then you get the likes of TWS69 or who cares, a 70 year old man raving about blackwashing of Ariel the fucking dolphin or whatever she is. Or Trump gets the KKK, same shit.
Well that shit is surely ludicrous. But that's the lot you're throwing in with.
That is to say, there's obviously decent people on the right. But also absolute fucking lunatics. Then with the exception of RM, the left is all the same one thing, you know what you're getting, it's not so bad. Ramshutu through to oro, they all just like to suck a cock every now and again. Danielle is a lesbian, basically.
So, well, the good guys. Thett for example. Skep is also gay, questionable. But what happens if your votes make for TheWhiteSaviour69 becoming president of America. Or who knows. ThankWhiteySlaves. TheyWillSuck. Just. He's an obnoxious fucking loser really. I'm drunk lol. I wish I could think of something fucking sick burn for his dumbass acronym. TheWhiteSerpent. Something.

I haven't played video games in years pretty much. I played a little League of Legends with my brother from time to time while he was studying abroad, but that was more phone calls than gaming.
I do kinda wanna get the new Harry Potter game coming out soon, maybe that reignites something. I loved elder scrolls, Skyrim was boring. Played the Witcher with my brother too for a while, was ok.
I probably suck at shooters these days. On PC anyway. I tired out CSGO again a while back and yeah just not for me, I've gotten old.
So what's a game I might like to play?

I think you learn more about the game where you have direct CC's. On other sites, you'll have games that are 2 or 3 days of MYLO between CC's. Open setup. Mafia has to CC or lose. I mean, I've never seen that here, is all, and I think you better learn how to read in reading between CC's. You get a read, there's a lynch, you'll learn something. I think waiting days on reads takes away from that positive or negative reinforcement.

Now it's getting fun.
I made a post on here a while back, it's actually my argument against that doomsday preppers second amendment argument you guys have, but it's interesting here:
It's my opinion that tyranny is a third world phenomenon only these days. Capitalism has killed it in the first world. We're all bought and sold by Apple and friends now, for better or worse, and it's just far too delicate an infrastructure to go moving armies over. There's no statesman can offer anything against what we have anymore, the lever of tyranny is scarcity.
What do you guys think? Will the Russian people choose Big Macs over Putin?
Also if they do, is that well regulated militia idea proven pure nonsense?

So I think we should compile a list of websites on which to advertise and spread the word about DART.
Below is what I've come up with so far:
Twitter
4chan
Pornhub comments section
Tinder
Grindr
I personally will take Grindr and I will also laminate a bunch of DART url cards to hand out to people I have interesting chats with in the sauna.

So my idea is that a culture of politics plus some few real and contentious issues fosters in people a practised affront and which is then a doorway to all sorts of silly shit.
The issues then would be guns, healthcare, and black people generally. There's reasonable arguments and viewpoints around all that stuff, maybe.
But then you get this practised affront in people, and that's basically a golden ticket to believe whatever the fuck you want. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory shit. World of pure imagination.
And then you got dudes chopping off their dicks. People identifying as dolphins. Whatever other silly shit. I hold that America is the silliest nation in the entire world, and entirely down to culture of politics.
It's a Pandora's box kind of idea, I guess. What you guys think?

For me, it's the Sword of Truth series. I don't remember where or when I read it. I know a disappointing series came out, but I remember nothing about it. I remember that people couldn't touch each other for some reason. I barely remember Darken Rahl who I had conflated with old DDO user Ragnar_Rahl. I don't believe I ever did ask him if that's what he was named for.

I'm feeling like a bit of a dog today, but. I always think, so in the wide open world, most animals die of the cold. Most animals have multiple offspring too, because the most part of them will die. And so that's the majority of life, weak, crawling, dying things, cold and alone, crying out in the night to who knows what. In Ireland, too, during the famine, infanticide was our biggest crime. Newborn children would be left on the side of the road, because it was another mouth to feed, and that wouldn't do. Sheep stealing, then, was runner up, sensibly enough. Noble creatures, love and morals and right and whatever else. Between the aches and the pains and the orgasms, I do like a cuddle every now and again. To be in it with someone else, I guess. I'll have kids someday, and who knows what that's about. Out of pure boredom, probably. Some people have a belly full of belief, and I'm envious lol.
