This probably comes as no surprise to anyone that I am dropping out and endorsing max. I have some criticisms of him as well. 

The criticisms in the hammer's latest thread and pie's is not something that should be just dismissed and brushed under the rug. 

I do believe though that despite his flaws, we have the same platform essentially and that max will be better at accomplishing similar goals and in fact will be in the perfect position to set himself up to help the site beyond that.

I think what the people that oppose max are missing is the good side of a max presidency. The negatives are obvious to them, but they miss that the positives will dramatically overshadow the negatives.

Why we need debate on a debate site

I found an article recently that stated the following

There is a lot of studies backing up that point as well, feel free to read through the article. Banning certain opinions shouldn’t be done. The only exceptions should be for legal reasons or for things that actually prevent free speech. Spamming would harm the free marketplace of ideals, as well as bullying and threats. Any promotion of illegal activity (not glorification) would also put the site in jeapordy as well as the free marketplace of ideals by extension.

that RM’s platform has been altered by meeting the marketplace of ideals. It’s still got the same core arguments, but should I lose to him, I would feel proud that I had some part in helping him craft a better platform that will be better for the site.

Despite RM benefiting from the free marketplace of ideals, he still seems to snub it. That’s fine, the biggest enemy of free speech, has always been free speech. It’s legitimately easier to attack, because it welcomes attack.

The best evidence for free open speech and dissent being a good thing on this site, is how well RM’s platform has evolved because of it. Read the first few pages of this thread to see what the early version of his message looked like.

The proper way to campaign for me

Message spamming people is against the rules on this site. However I want to explain what spam is and is not. RM has indicated he believes that any campaign related emails are spam. The mods can feel free to correct me, but I think he is handcuffing himself a little much in this respect.

If you have a relationship with somebody and routinely message them on the site, than it is not spam to send a message to your friend saying “I think RM is the best candidate and voting started today, please vote”.

The spam they don’t allow is just randomly sending messages to everyone in your in box who has ever messaged you, or really anyone you don’t have a prior warm relationship to. I have to be more careful than my supporters. I will probably only send reminders to people who have contacted me during this election cycle.

There is this instinct with some people to never go in that gray area, but the election by it’s nature is competitive, and if you aren’t playing all the way to the edge (ethically) than you are unfairly handcuffing yourself.

I would like to take this time to remind my more vocal supporters, not to attack RM personally. He’s pushed my buttons and I have done some things I am not proud of in response, but I for the most part have not got personal with him. I expect the same from you. If he pushes your buttons and you feel emotional, walk away. Count to 3. breathe. Then go make a thoughtful response or just none at all.

RM is a human being. He is deserving of love. More so than love, he is deserving of respect. He shouldn’t be abused, just because he cares enough about the site, that he has decided to run for president and be a lightning rod of criticism. That is a very brave thing for him to do, and he should be commended.

Oppose him, not by attacking him, but by talking to fence sitters about why his policies are bad or why he would be bad for the position. (Using only actions made during this campaign) . If you want to, make threads where you hyper focus on a single problem with his platform or even his temperament. Be careful with the latter though, as it can drift into a personal attack if you don’t guard yourself.

RM lacks Tempered Reason

Speaking of temperament. I want to point out, that by it’s nature the office of presidency is a very diplomatic position. In my campaign thread I mentioned why I would be better at diplomacy than an RM.

His interactions with the head mod starts on page 2 and continues until page 3. It takes 5 minutes to read and you can all judge for yourself whether these are interactions that are likely to be persuasive to somebody who has the power to implement the changes you want to see.

RM knows that not only are members of the religion forum important to how this election turns out, but that the atheists are more likely to like my message, so his response is to lose his temper and try to make me look bad by pulling up old threads. One for an interfaith service for the religion forum and one that argued that the existence of God should be argued in the philosophy question.

The threads were obviously made to be tongue in cheek. I am never agnostic but do flip back and forth on whether I believe God is real or not, though recently my belief in him has strengthened, so maybe I am staying theistic.

Take a look back at RM’s campaign thread. I posted in the beginning before deciding to run, a few questions that could help him to ease my concern about what an RM presidency would look like, and that are probably circulating in the heads of fence sitters thinking of voting for him but weren’t entirely decided.

His responses were instead of calmly answering the questions and assuming best intent on my part, he immediately attacked me on a personal level. His responses deeply concerned me. I definitely thought after that, he would be a disaster for the site as president. Beyond that. There is just something about RM that makes me like the guy.

I know, it’s weird. Maybe it is because he has a unique way of looking at the world, maybe it is because I can tell that despite his flaws, he really does have a deep sense of empathy. Either way I can’t help but to like him, so him lashing out at me in the thread and saying he has no respect for me and could care less about my vote, to a certain extent hurt my feelings.

His emotional responses aren’t conducive to good leadership. Good leadership requires tempered reason, when a leader has only soft power on their side, it requires a lot of diplomacy which isn’t something that can be done, when you act without thinking

TLDR

1. Free speech makes us all better
2. campaign for me by being respectful as well as not spamming, while remaining proactive.
3. tempered reason is an important trait in leaders that RM has not displayed an ability to do

As the rules state I am not allowed to start campaign threads any more, so this in effect makes my campaigning suspended.

I am still running for president, but just suspending the campaign. 

If my supporters want me elected, I advise them to reach out to other users independently of me and organize to keep them updated on the election in a neutral fashion, and to each reach out to 3 people out of their normal circle and get them to take action by voting. 

I encourage an outreach to long time users who have went silent to come back merely for a vote to show they still cares what happens to the site. 

My vice president will announce himself after his current mission is complete and I will be online approximately 5 minutes a day to work with my advisors and liaisons to the site. 

I am honored to be nominated for the office of presidency. I humbly accept the honor of representing all of Dart. My main opponent is rational madman and in his thread, many people asked him questions pertaining to his presidency. I want to address those concerns, so my campaign and his can be compared side by side.

I understand that these sorts of things can get heated and personal. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, but I think it’s beneath me and rational madman. We’ll both be running very polite, issues focused campaigns. (I believe)

I want my supporters to know, that any nastiness seen coming from the other campaign is purely from some of RM’s more vocal supporters and not a reflection of him. He’ll make a great president should he win, and he should be supported, even if his policies should be opposed.

RM is mainly running a campaign to stop a lot of the hate seen on the site, and his opinion of the mods failing to do their jobs and negate those negative experiences for users. In his campaign thread he has made good points about if the mods were more pro active in confronting bad behavior such as harassment and bullying, than we could avoid some bans and have a more active user base. He’s right. I prefer them just sending some PM’s and perhaps things like the recent drama can which polytheist witch has been subjected to, can be avoided. His solution would be better enforced and more frequent restraining orders and I disagree with that approach and have seen sites where the mods are just standard bearers who remind others to be respectful, and it has worked well. I’d encourage more of that approach, but that is just a minor squabble with his plan.

I think RM, is well suited to do those things. He has a history of protecting and looking out for the downtrodden. He was probably put on the Earth by God to do that mission. I want to support him in that, when I win the presidency. I will put him in charge of an anti bullying campaign that will work on that problem, completely independent of me. He will contact the mods directly and be a liaison to them as well as the public.

If you like what RM will do for the downtrodden, than vote me. With me in office, he doesn’t have to split his attention to other things a president does either.

Where we differ is probably on the freedom of speech angle. RM believes that if most people find an opinion disgusting, they should have the freedom to stop people from giving you arguments in favor of that opinion. This is no mere political opinion. He wants to do that to DART. He doesn’t understand that when there is more debate it benefits all of us. Studies have been done showing that organizations do better, when they have dissenters in their ranks who freely express their opinions. This bears out, even when the dissenters are always wrong. If these studies are to be trusted, than RM is actively trying to make DART worse, in that regard. (not intentionally)

We need to think about precedent here as well. The precedent of removing an unpopular opinion is not the only precedent at stake here, although that one is likely the most important. If we put him in office, than we will have his behavior as a precedent of what the president should be. RM I don’t think is capable of being an advocate for the people here.

The only real power of the presidency is their ability to influence moderators. If we put an impotent person up there, that is how they will be perceived in the future and the ability of the office to accomplish anything, will be forever marred. I can tell you, I won’t be impotent. I have a good relationship with the current mods and some former ones who still are influential and I can use as liaisons in my steed. I think I can directly advocate on behalf of the community, but if not than I have resources who can. I have one mod who was relaying private mod conversations to me via screenshots, and showing me the progress of my unbanning. Another mod I have met in person. Ragnar messages me from time to time to show me his more light hearted side in response to my posts. Whiteflame I have had phone calls with and a lot of personal conversations, and has always shown respect for what I say, even when what I have said has been ignorant. I will not be an impotent president. I will be one with actual power and influence.

The most important benefit of electing me, is I will give you actual currency. Wylted Bucks are not a joke. I just want to show you some recent bans where certain things should not be taken into consideration.  A lot of the things people are being banned for also seem to be the things that generate site activity, and we need lots of activity to see the site be active. I'm afraid that now that rational madman is a heavy favorite to become president, they'll try to ban him. If it was merely rhetoric, I might agree. However she provided premises for her beliefs. If she's wrong it shouldn't be a problem to prove her wrong as opposed to banning her in an attempt to avoid her argument.

Whiteflame apparently supported this decision, so why not just embarrass her by proving her wrong with your superior knowledge of genetics? Why support Chris's decision. If you perhaps could not prove her wrong, perhaps banning her was not the correct move, but coming over to her point of view.

You see with liberals, I think they believe we all have to be equally prone to violence, have equal IQ's and be equally athletic in order to prove we are all equal. This is a form of racism in and of itself. The problem isn't that liberals are racist for these internal beliefs though. The problem is that if anything threatens this world view, than they need to silence it. Anything that creates cognitive dissonance, must be shut down.

You might be wondering. Why if I could disprove my own posts, why did I post them? 

I have 2 reasons.  One is to provide a protective umbrella for people to express extreme beliefs. If I am making these posts, it allows people to be less shy about their secret beliefs. Some which may be disgusting and untrue, and others which may be disgusting and true, and something that would benefit us all to know. I did it precisely so people like mesmer would feel safe having their views challenged. 

The second reason is so you guys can have some experience challenging these beliefs effectively. When you argue against extremists, there are not just people on the fence listening to your arguments in real life, but you may actually change the belief of an extremists. How good would you feel, knowing that you may have stopped somebody from destroying their life with hate? How much better would you feel, knowing you perhaps prevented some form of domestic terrorism and saved lives. 

If you learn to argue effectively against these things you will.

That sort of silencing makes you wonder, why do they need to shut up dissent? Then you may start thinking "Maybe because the anti-semitism is true and they can't argue against it".
