Greetings, everyone!
It has been a great pleasure and honor to serve as the head moderator of DebateArt.com. I have been a moderator for almost 3 years. I decided that it was time for me to step down as head moderator. Over the past few months I’ve been taking a back seat as I am working on my bachelors degree. I will still be in on the mod team as an advisor and will still be on the site.
Ragnar has also opted to step down. I appreciate the work he has done for the community.
The new mod team will be
Head mod: MisterChris
Deputy mod: SupaDudz
Vote mod: Whiteflame
Over the past 3 years I have made many great friends and feel that I’ve grown as a person and as a debater.
Thank you, DART for making this a great place.
Peace and Service.
David

Aloha!
I am back after a bit of a hiatus. The Fall semester is finally over so I will have more time to dedicate myself to DART! We are going to be hosting a live debate tournament utilizing the Lincoln-Douglas format. This will be a single-elimination tournament.
LD Format
6min - Pro Constructive
3min - Con CX's Pro
7min - Con Constructive AND Rebuttal
3min - Pro CX's Con
4min - Pro Rebuttal and Defense
6min - Con Rebuttal and Defense
3min - Pro Rebuttal and Defense
Each debater has 4 minutes of prep time which they may use at their discretion, so long as it does not interrupt an ongoing speech or CX.
You are free to choose whatever topic you decide and the position you will take. Debates will take place when all parties are available. Once I generate the brackets, you have 48 hours to choose a topic and a side. Failure to do so will result in me picking for you.

Greetings, everyone!
Several of you have messaged me and have been commenting on my lack of activity. I have been less active recently due to school and work. I would like to thank Ragnar for their help and their work as a moderator.
Also: I have changed my username from Virtuoso to David.

In light of recent events, and in light of the historical connotations of "lynch", MafiaUniverse and MafiaScum have replaced the word "lynch" in their games. MafiaScum went even further than MU by banning moderators from using that word, but not punishing players. The moderation team does not moderate mafia games and we make no plans to enforce such a chance, I want to open it to discussion on using a different word such as "eliminate."

Greetings, everyone!
I have some sad news to share. Speedrace is stepping down from his position as forum moderator. We appreciate the hard work, dedication, and insight that he brought to the team. Needless to say, speedrace is welcome back to the moderation team anytime he feels ready. I wish him the best as he finishes up the semester and starts college.
As of now, the moderation team is:

Greetings, everyone!
First I have some bad news to share. Drafterman has opted to step down in his role as a forum moderator due to some real-life issues. I cannot thank him enough for his service. Rest assured that he is welcomed to come back to the moderation team when he feels ready to do so.
Second, I want to inform you of a new moderation policy. For now on, any threads created by a banned user's alternate account will be deleted entirely
Thank you,

Greetings, everyone!
Welcome to another installment of Virt's Mafia. This game, like the last one, will be an open setup and themeless. I am aiming to get 9-13 players.
RULES
THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE OF THEM ALL
NEVER discuss this game with other players outside of this Game Thread (regardless of whether you are alive or dead), unless your Role PM gives you explicit permission to do so (i.e. if you are part of a non-village team or a masonry).
This means that you are NOT allowed to send someone even seemingly innocuous messages such as "Wow, this <insert player name> is pretty wacky, huh?", or "this mafia game is pretty fun", or "I'm so busy right now, which is why I'm barely even posting in the game".
If another player references the game to you outside of the Game Thread, please PM me immediately.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE EDIT YOUR POST! I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SERIOUS BREACH OF GAME INTEGRITY AND WILL RESULT IN AN IMMEDIATE MOD KILL!
Activity
You are required to make 10 posts per DP. At least 5 of those posts must be substantive. A substantive post is any post that advances the progress of the game. The determination of what is or is not a substantive post is mine, and mine alone, to make.
Failure to meet this activity standard makes you eligible for replacement. If you know in advance that you won't be active, tell me ahead of time, otherwise, I will have a lot less sympathy for you. For those who were insufficiently active but who had legitimate reasons for the low activity, I will expect you to make up for your inactivity in the next DP. You may receive 1 activity prompt in the last 24 to 12 hours of a DP; this is not guaranteed. A failure to get this prompt out to you will not excuse any inactivity.
Game Mechanics
- The day phase shall last for 72 hours and night phases shall last for 24 hours, or until everyone checks in.
- Dead players may continue to talk to their teammates after death
- Plurality lynching is turned on. If no one gets a majority of votes by the end of the day, then the person with the most votes will be lynched. In the event of a tie, I will randomly select a player to be lynched using random.org
- Day phases end will end immediately upon a lynch. If I am not present when the final vote is cast, I will ask that you refrain from chatting in the thread.
- To vote, bold VTL: Username. I strongly recommend that you tag me when you vote. It is not required to Unvote if you change your vote
Civility
- Observe all site-wide rules and the code of conduct.
- Don't be a dick towards each other.
- Once again, only discuss the game in this thread. Do not PM other players, unless your Role PM allows this. Additionally, do not post anything about the game in other threads on this forum, or on other forums.
- Do not share your Role PM. Sharing a screenshot of your Role PM is cheating, as would discussing the time stamp of your Role PM.
- Hydra'ing or multi-accounting is not allowed. Do not share your account with anyone else.
- Breadcrumbing your role is allowed. Secret codes requiring keys or anything resembling such is NOT allowed.

This is a message to all religious forum users.
Since the beginning of the new year, the overwhelming majority of forum post reports has involved users and posts in this forum. Over two dozen of such reports with only 2 or 3 not being from this forum.
Many of these are not strict violations, but come close to toeing this line. Some users have had to be warned and some posts deleted.
Despite these actions, user interactions has grown increasingly vitriolic and more and more posts are coming close to and crossing that line. Rather than continue to issue individual warnings and habding out temporary bans, I am sending out a blanket warning to all religious forum users:
Reign in the insults and personal attacks. There is a negative feedback loop that is making each conversation consistently worse and worse.
The Moderation team is going to establish the following course of action:
1. Mark all current reports as handled; the above warning serves as a warning for all users regarding all reported posts.
2. Continue to monitor the situation.
3. If individual threads receive a high number of reports, and those reports involve posts that cross the line, or are coming close to crossing the line, the moderators will post a warning in that thread and lock it for 24 hours.
4. If the behavior repeats after the thread is reopened, the thread will be locked permanently.
5. If a thread is locked permanently as a result of the above, any users with any post that violates the CoC will be temporarily banned.
6. Continued violations after a temporary ban will result in further bans of increasing duration until the ban is indefinite
The moderation team knows that any discussion about religion will inevitably get heated, but please make sure you are following the CoC.
Thanks,
Virtuoso

Greetings, everyone!
I wanted to update you guys on a few things that are going on behind the scenes. I have not been able to get a hold of PressF4Respect. As such, drafterman will be taking his place and is being promoted to forum moderator. Please welcome him to the team! That being said, SupaDudz will be announcing the new discord assistant mod soon.
Next, we are currently working to revise and expand the Code of Conduct to make it easier to understand and digest. One thing that we are considering is splicing it up into three sections under the umbrella "terms of service." If you look at that page, you will see exactly what we mean. The only text that has changed is adding a link to the moderator's profile and a statement that you must be at least 13 years of age to join our site in compliance with COPPA. We would like some feedback for this change
I would now like to open up a discussion on what you would like to see changed in the COC and what changes you would like to see the moderation team make.
Regards,
Virtuoso

Greetings, everyone!
The moderation team is excited to announce that two new moderators will be joining the moderation team. First, christopher_best will be replacing Ramshutu as a debate moderator. He will work with blamonkey to ensure that votes are met to our standards. Second, PressF4Respect is joining the team as a forum moderator. As a forum moderator, he will be working with speedrace, Ragnar, and myself to ensure that the forums remain a friendly place.
What happens next? These two will be undergoing a probationary period for the next few weeks. Upon satisfactorily completing their training, they will be officially installed as new moderators.
If you applied and were not chosen, we will keep your application on file for the future.

The moderation team is looking to add two new moderators to our ranks. We are looking for both a debate moderator and a forum moderator.
The debate moderator will work closely with blamonkey, myself, and Ragnar in handling reported votes, reported debates, and reported debate comments.
The forum moderator will be working closely with speedrace, myself, and Ragnar in handling forum reports, sending warnings, and possibly determine if a user should get a temp-ban.
We will be accepting applications until the end of the week. Please get them in ASAP if you want to be considered.
Edit: To be clear, if you want to apply, please contact me (Virt) directly.

Overall, I'm really pleased as to how well this game went. Everyone was fairly active and respectful. This was my first time in more than a year hosting a manual game like this. MU has me spoiled where I don't have to do vote counts.
MVPs
Mafia: Ragnar. Wow, I am really impressed by how well Ragnar played. Although this was one of his first games, he really impressed me and was able to fool the town. Honestly, if I was in the game, he'd probably would have been one of my top town reads. Great job ragnar!
Town: Drafterman. Drafterman really did a great job keeping the town together. His thought process was really good and made an enjoyable game.
Mod notes for the future
Please, whatever you do, don't hammer yourself, especially when we're only 3 hours into the game phase.

Greetings, everybody!
We are in the process of making revisions to the COC. Most of the text is the same, but there are still some significant differences. The proposed changes can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bcpJ79KM1rOMjgyz5Ssa0T1v0Lj5ybt0LwnD3bXTYNw/edit?usp=sharing
What's New
The text has been reorganized so that the moderation structure is first, then the voting policy, and finally the conduct policy.
The moderation structure text has been changed from "Mod decisions are final and not subject to appeal" to " If you are banned and wish to appeal a ban, you can email the moderation team at [email protected]."
The restraining order section added, " Additionally, a user may request that an RO be placed between them and another member."
Added the following new rules:
B. The Golden Rule
Treat others as they wish to be treated: If someone makes a reasonable request to you, please comply. In other words, don’t be a dick.
C. Authenticity
You may not:
- Impersonate individuals, groups, or organizations in a manner intended to or likely to deceive others. Parody accounts are acceptable as long as they: are clear that they are a parody and not a parody of other Site users;
- Violate other intellectual property rights;
- Plagiarize content and pass it off as your own; and/or
- Impersonate the staff or the moderation team.
D. Violence and Criminal Behavior
You may not:
- Threaten or promote violence against an individual or group of individuals to include terrorism or violent extremism; or
- Engage in or promote criminal activity;
DebateArt is not responsible or liable for any users that may violate national, international, or local laws. It is your responsibility to know the laws that pertain to you and act lawfully at all times.
Added a link to the privacy policy
and finally added a "harassment policy."
J. Harassment
You may not:
- Harass other members;
- Stalk other members;
- Encourage harassment; and
- Post harassing or hateful images in your profile photo.
If a member politely requests that you leave them alone, do so. Do not vote on their debates and do not follow them around the site.
Is there anything else we should add or take away?

Greetings, everyone!
With the latest release by Mike, the moderation team has access to more control over the permission system. Among them is to ban people from creating forum topics and posts, as well as restricting their access to part of the debate sections. Moving forward, the moderation team believes that it would be beneficial to temporarily revoke permission from one side of the site instead of a full site ban. The advantages the moderation team sees with this are as follows:
1) We believe it will loosen up our moderation grip. There have been some complaints about being too heavy and we want to loosen up our grip some.
2) It enables people to finish up any debates they are currently in and not worry about forfeiting.
3) Even if a user is banned from the debate section (ie voting, creating debates, etc) they will still be able to publish arguments
This is an open discussion and we want to run this policy by you guys.

Greetings, everyone!
I would first like to thank everyone for their patience as we reorganize the moderation team and work to make DART a better place. I feel that now is a good time to throw up an AMA.
The goal of this thread is for us, as a team, to sit down with the community and come to better understand each other. We want to make our process more transparent and get feedback from you guys on what you would like to see us do.

This is the new moderation log that will be replacing the old one. This thread is a log on ongoing bans, bother permanent and temporarily, which were effectuated on or after October 29, 2019. Not included in this log are bans impacting accounts which were created exclusively for commercial advertising or spam-related purposes. The information given for each kind of log is clearly stated below:
- Entries of permanent bans will state the date the ban was effectuated and provide a brief (not more than 500 characters) summary of why the user was permanently banned
- Entries of temporary bans will state the length of the ban and the date the ban was effectuated
- Entries of bans by request (i.e. bans a user requested be applied to their own account) will state the date the ban was effectuated.
- Entries of closed multi-accounts (i.e. old accounts of otherwise active users) will state the date the ban was effectuated.
As the new chief moderator, my goal is to make the moderation team more transparent with our process. Additionally, we believe that debaters expect their opponent to be able to finish their debates and will naturally be curious when someone is banned. I am moving the ban log from the miscellaneous section to the DebateArt.com section to make this thread more transparent and easier to see.
The moderator who made the ban ruling will also be included in all entries. Moderation will not offer public comment on the reasons for temporary bans unless and until either (a) the banned user returns and raises the issue publicly or (b) public interest outweighs the banned user's privacy concerns.
If you have any questions as to why someone was banned, please refer them to this post.
If you are banned and want to appeal your ban, please email us at [email protected].

Greetings, everyone!
The past few weeks have seen quite a bit of drama that should have been completely avoided. I am disappointed in seeing how the HOF went down and the resignation of bsh1. With that said, my first official act as chief moderator is to give everyone a full amnesty with the expectation that you improve your behavior. Everyone will be starting over with a clean slate. However, those who are currently banned will remain banned until their ban expires. I think it is best for all of us to forgive each other, love each other, move forward, and put this all behind us. I honestly think it was a bit harsh to not allow campaigning and vote discussions. In next year’s hall of fame, this will be allowed.
In the next few weeks, there will obviously be a period of transition as we all get used to the new leadership. Additionally, I am working on restructuring and refactoring the moderator team to make it more transparent and organized. I’d ask for your patience in moving forward and please keep things civil. This thread will be locked in 72 hours.

Greetings, everyone!
I would first like to thank bsh1 for his service to the community. Over the past year, I feel like I have grown significantly as a person, moderator, and a debater under his guidance. He will be missed. I am super excited to serve as the chief moderator. I know I have made mistakes in the past and I know that I will probably make mistakes in the future. I will do the best I can in my new position.
That being said, I would like to welcome two new moderators. First off, blamonkey will be joining the moderation team as an assistant vote moderator. He will work closely with Ramshutu to handle vote reports. Second, Ragnar will be taking my place as the deputy moderator. Please welcome these two people to the team. These two people were chosen because I believe they’re some of the deepest thinking people on the site and both are well-liked and respected by the community. Both of these people have clean moderation records as well as impressive debating records in their own right. Blamonkey has done dozens of in-depth and well-researched debate topics on DART and on DDO. He has also been consistently one of the most in-depth voters here and on DDO. Ragnar was chosen for the same reasons. He has quite an impressive debating record. With DDO and DART taken into consideration, Ragnar has done over 100 debates and did not lose a single debate. That is quite impressive indeed!
Lastly, Speedrace is being promoted to a full forum moderator. He will have access to the admin panel as well as all moderation tools. He will be advising me on the forum end and making recommendations.
That said, here is the current moderation team:
Virtuoso, chief moderator
Ragnar, deputy moderator
Speedrace, forum moderator
blamonkey, voting moderator
ramshutu, voting moderator
SupaDudz, discord liaison
drafterman, discord liaison
I have full faith and confidence in my team. Please be patient with us as our team begins to take shape.

Over the past few weeks, there have been some voting issues that have come up and I want to leave it open for discussion. This is not an official MEEPS, but it may be MEEP'd later.
The Questions
1. If a user is ineligible to vote but votes on a debate that will otherwise not be moderated, should we allow this vote to stand?
There have been cases where voters who are not eligible have voted on troll or FF debates that are not moderated. The way we handle this in the past has been to allow those votes to stand but revoke their voting permission and send them a friendly reminder. Since multiple votes like this has been reported, I want to open this to discussion. What should the moderation team do with such votes?
2. How much (or how little) should we enforce "special rules" of debates.
Our voting policy has always been that we ignore special rules of debates; however, I am seeing that this isn't always entirely workable. If the debate rules say "forfeiting is an automatic loss," should we permit votes who do not necessarily vote that way to stand? Furthermore, if a debate rule said "Person X cannot vote on this debate," should the moderation team remove that vote?

Aloha!
With summertime approaching, I am hoping to run a solid tournament here on DART. The last tournament ended up with almost everyone flaking out. I'm looking for a minimum of 8 debaters and a maximum of 12.
Topic Selection
Debaters, in consultation with their opponents, may create and choose their own topics. Debaters have five days from this post to decide upon a topic and can do whatever topics they want. Debaters are prohibited from doing humorous or troll topics; if you have a question about what that means, please ask me. Should debaters fail to agree to a topic, I will randomly assign them a topic from the National Speech and Debate Association; I will also randomly assign debaters their side on the topic. In such a situation, each debater will be allowed to strike up to two of the 16 topics, making them ineligible for me to assign.
Sign-Ups
Anyone with at least 3 debates where they did not forfeit is eligible to sign up. Hopefully, the tournament will start within the next few weeks.
Pairings
The tournament has been set up as a power-paired bracket (with high-low pairings) based on competitors' ELO scores at the time sign-ups closed

This has been an issue for quite some time. It has been the stare decisis of the voting team to not enforce "special rules" of the debate (i.e. the voters must vote for me or their votes will be removed by the mod team). This includes special rules such as "Virtuoso may not vote on this debate." This has led to some controversy and I want to open this up for discussion. If a person states "X may not vote on this debate" should we, the mod team, remove those votes even if they are otherwise sufficient?
Thanks for your cooperation!

Kinda curious if anyone is up for a game of mafia? I'm hoping to get 9-13 players. I'll try to see if people from MU would come and play. It's been a long time since this community has done a proper mafia game.
If it's 9 players, I'd probably end up doing Matrix-6. If it is 13 players, probably a cop 13'er.

I've been thinking a lot recently of the philosophy of the mind and whether the mind and the brain are synonymous or if there is an immaterial aspect of the brain. I came across a fascinating story of twins that share a brain.
Here's some key takeaways from the articles that I read:
Twins joined at the head — the medical term is craniopagus — are one in 2.5 million, of which only a fraction survive. The way the girls’ brains formed beneath the surface of their fused skulls, however, makes them beyond rare: their neural anatomy is unique, at least in the annals of recorded scientific literature. Their brain images reveal what looks like an attenuated line stretching between the two organs, a piece of anatomy their neurosurgeon, Douglas Cochrane of British Columbia Children’s Hospital, has called a thalamic bridge, because he believes it links the thalamus of one girl to the thalamus of her sister. The thalamus is a kind of switchboard, a two-lobed organ that filters most sensory input and has long been thought to be essential in the neural loops that create consciousness. Because the thalamus functions as a relay station, the girls’ doctors believe it is entirely possible that the sensory input that one girl receives could somehow cross that bridge into the brain of the other. One girl drinks, another girl feels it.Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/29/magazine/could-conjoined-twins-share-a-mind.html

Greetings!
This past week there was a nasty breach in voting integrity. The debate in question is here. At the last second, four votes came in. Two votes were voted bombs for Pro and two were counter-bombs for con. Needless to say, the moderator team is doing the best they can to get to the bottom of what happened and who is responsible. Here's what we definitely know so far:
(1) Entropy/Neg Entrop are the same people
(2) vave/veze are the same people
There is no IP match between the two so we are certain that there are two people at play. If you have any information on what happened, please let the administrative team know immediately.
That being said, Mike and I have had a long conversation today. What we are thinking of is adding a few measures to ensure that new accounts can't be made to simply vote and leave. Here's what we are considering:
(1) Require 3 debates that have at least 3 rounds, are not forfeited, and are not troll debates; OR
(2) Require at least 500 quality forum posts; OR
(3) Prove to the moderator team that you understand the voting process by giving us three quality RFDs plus 200 forum posts
I would also love to hear your thoughts on how to ensure the integrity of the voting process.
Another point to make, we are considering adding the following:
(1) The ability for the moderator team to view full email addresses (currently the moderator team is not able to view email addresses); and
(2) The ability to view the entire IP address for accounts
Any other feedback and suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi all,
I am really sick right now and will probably have to go to the hospital. I will have limited access over the next few days. Any questions and reports should be directed to bsh1. Hopefully, I will be back to normal in about a week.
I also apologize to Ramshutu and Magic for forfeiting my debates with them. Hope they forgive me and will allow us to revisit those topics when I am well.
Love y'all

Aloha!
Welcome to the first DART tournament of 2019! I am hoping to run regularly scheduled tournaments throughout the year. I hope that these tournaments will help make DART and help grow the debate section of the site. I will be using the Tournament Bracket Generator to create pairings. This will be a single elimination tournament.
This tournament will have a maximum of twelve participants (6 pairings). This may be increased if there is enough interest. Regardless of how many debaters we get this tournament will hopefully start within the next two weeks.
This tournament will be moderated by myself.
Rules
1.Topics will be decided by the debaters. However, there is a strict 48h time limit. If no topic is agreed to after this time frame, I'll be choosing a topic for you.
2. In the event of an odd number of competitors, there will be bye rounds, and I will randomly choose people to freely advance to the next round.
3. The voting period for the debates shall be set for two weeks
4. No troll or non standard debates
Possible Resolutions
If you can't think of a resolution to debate here are some that I believe would make for a good debate.
Resolved: In a democracy, the public’s right to know ought to be valued above the right to privacy of candidates for public office.
Resolved: The United States ought not provide military aid to authoritarian regimes.
Resolved: The United States ought to withdraw from NATO
Resolved: The United States should build and maintain a border wall with Mexico
Resolved: The United States federal government should impose price controls on the pharmaceutical industry.
Resolved: The United States federal government should ban the advertisements of prescription medicine.
Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce its restrictions on legal immigration to the United States.

Judges Signup
I would also like to ask people to signup for judging debates. While anyone can judge a debate we want to be sure that each debate gets at least one high quality RFD and that there are no tied debates. As such if you signup to be a judge you may be called on to judge a debate if a debate has no votes and is less than 3 days left in the voting period.
