Hello all,

I am in the middle of preparing my first argument for a foreign policy debate I want to post. However, I am weary about actually doing the debate for one reason, my sources. The vast majority of my sources come from books, which obviously aren't available for free on the internet, which sort of leaves me in a bind. I know it is poor form to cite something that is trapped behind a price tag, but I really like my sources and I do not want to scouer the internet to find something which makes the same claims as those contained in my books.

Could I take screenshots of the part of the book I am looking to source (they're all online copies) or does that remove too much context? Is there anything I can do?

I decided to try and decipher the best MMA heavyweights of all time using the long and rich 31-year history of Fight Matrix rankings.

The Chicago Black Hawks are my favourite hockey team, and the former best team in the league. But now their trash...

  • Toews' best seasons are probably behind him or are going to be behind him soon.
  • Kane is stilling putting up good number but he's in his 30s now, so he'll be dropping off soon.
  • Keith's numbers are dropping, plus he's in his late 30s, so he's going to retire soon.
  • Seabrook is horribly injured, so he can't even play, but his stats are down, and down a lot.
However it looks like they're turning things around.

  • Debrincat is a young superstar goalscorer.
  • Kublinka is also a young superstar goalscorer
  • Boquist looks like he'll become a good top 4 or even top 2 defenceman if he develops properly.
  • Dach is a great depth guy down the middle, and with proper development he could become a top 6 or top 3 guy.
  • Strome has blossomed in Chicago, lets hope he remains a 50-60 point player.

Economy

Overall Impact

Research from Ian Goldin attributes two thirds of America's economic growth since 2011 to immigrants, coming to the conclusion that immigrants are "highly beneficial."

Wages

A 30 year meta analysis of immigrants and their impact on wages suggest that a 1% increase in the share of labourers that are foriegn born increases wages by 0.008%.  In other words, immigrants do not have a large impact on wages.

Keep in mind that this analyses the short term impacts of immigration in the long term they might be some positive impacts...

"Immigrants are not simply workers but consumers. They increase the host country’s demand for goods and services. In the long run, immigration can lead to more investment, resulting in greater demand for labor and thus increased wages and employment in the economy."

Employment

A study by Rachel M. Friedberg and Jennifer Hunt came to the conclusion that a 10% increase in the share of labourers that are foriegn born decreases wages by 0-1% and has no impact on employment.

Keep in mind that the study I used for the wages segment stated that employment for natives could even increase in the long run.

Crime

Illegals

A 2018 analysis of all 50 states and DC over the course of 24 years found that illegals were less likely to commit crime than natives.

The Cato Institute reported that illegals were 40 percent less likely to get arrested and 46 percent less likely to commit murder.

So far I have only seen one study that clearly demonstrated illegals committing more crime, but Cato did a debunking. According to Cato the study assumed all people classified as “non-US citizen and deportable” were illegals, but in actuality a very large portion of the people under this label were legals that violated the terms of their visas.
Moreover, even if this was a valid study, which it does not appear to be, it seems to be a massive outlier.

Legals

A study observing strictly Mexican immigrants found that Mexican immigrants were not more or less likely to commit property or violent crime.

Likewise, this study also found no relation between immigration and crime.

This has been one of the many issues I’ve changed my mind on, I was wondering if the people of DART could sway me back to being anti immigrant or not.

Hello, I am a believer in systemic racism, feel free to change my mind.

Police Shootings

This is one where it’s a little iffy, but there probably is some disparity.

For one, the data is not all pointing in one direction. This study suggests that there is no bias in police shootings for instance. However, forming your opinions off of individual studies when there are massive meta analyses to work off of is rather faulty. If we look at an analysis of 42 studies, there is clearly bias against African Americans in police shootings. This held up for both armed and unarmed criminals.

Police Stops

I think this one is pretty clear, an analysis of 95 million police stops demonstrated that African Americans were pulled over significantly more than white people. The researchers further found that the disparity shrunk at night time, supposedly this is because it is harder to identify the race of a driver at night.

Sentencing

Even after controlling for age, education, citizenship, weapon possession and prior criminal history among other things, racial disparities still exist in sentencing. To be specific, the study found that black people were sentenced 20.4 percent longer relative to white people in similar situations.

What this Means

It is rather important not to shame any race for being advantaged in some way, it really accomplishes nothing. Instead we should try to fix these issues one at a time, first though I think we should try to acknowledge that these issues are real and meaningful.

Feel free to attack any one of the points I presented, please stay civil though.  : )

On a conceptual level a flat tax has always seemed rather inefficient. However, it seems like most studies show a positive impact. This one shows how a flat tax increases revenue by 25%, increases productivity by 5%, and decreases tax evasion by 10.5%.

What do you guys think?

Bernie has pushed for rent controls, what are your thoughts?

I am against rent controls, and so are economists. 81% of economists say that rent controls failed to provide cheap and high quality housing in New York and San Francisco, while only 2 percent of economists said otherwise.
Moreover, several studies are against rent controls...

I want to see what others have to say.

Steven Bonnel is a rational and intelligent liberal. Despite me disagreeing with him on a few issues, I think he's a good source if you want to hear arguments against social conservatism. He has (in my opinion) beaten conservatives like Nick Fuentes, Lauren Southern, James Allsup, and Andy Waraski.

Personally he's shifted me to left on social policy and a bit to the right on economic policy.

What do you guys think of him? : )

I've recently been captivated by this topic so I want to create a forum thread on it. However, I'm just a laymen so we must look to studies from people who know their stuff. One conclusion I came to was that worker owned companies are more profitable and more stable.

Here is a good source.
On the contrary, I have also come to the conclusion that worker owned companies are horribly difficult to get off the ground.

Here's another good source. (Use the word search function for the best experience, it's too long.)

On the whole I'm anti worker owned companies. I'm not an economist, nor do I have a great or decent understanding of economics. But I want to create a discussion on the topic anyway.

Which measurement is superior when determining the size of an economy? I'd say GDP PPP is superior on the whole(unfortunately). GDP PPP does adjust for different cost of livings and such. The only criticism of PPP I've seen is that it's harder to measure.

Lets break it down--say a service costs 30USD in Chicago, but if that same service costs 15USD in Beijing because of the different cost of living, nominal actually adds 15 and 30 dollars to each economy,  but in PPP, they account for the different cost of livings. So why should the same service be counted differently?

This argument fascinates me because of the Indian, Chinese, and American economies. If we use GDP PPP America is behind China and a tad ahead of India, but if we use Nominal America is well ahead of both India and China by quite a wide margin.

Really I'm looking for a compelling argument in favour of Nominal GDP over GDP PPP. Can anybody more informed on this chime in, this topic has been bugging me for years, just a while ago I came to the conclusion that PPP was superior.

YEAAAAaaaahhh. No I ain't happy but it's to be expected, a massive plurality of people favour liberals in Canada, if the conservative and liberal candidates are equally good the Liberals will win. Liberals win so much that they've earned the title "the natural governing party." The Conservatives even gained 23 seats out of 338 though, so that's cool.

I'm not quite sure, China has the population but doesn't produce as much oil, we thought Japan would pass America and that didn't work out, I guess we'll see.

There isn't enough evidence to prove either way in my opinion.

What do you think?

I have to use Microsoft Edge for this site because it doesn't work on IE, but IE is superior in everyway to Fire Fox, Chrome, and Edge. I've tried them all and nothing beats IE, I don't get why people hate it other than a ton of sites not being compatible with it.
