Come off it, YYW. You've said similar to people just as young.

@Annie_ESocialBookworm
I think it is clear to everyone, including you, that I was joking. You, of all people, should be familiar with my sense of humor. It is precisely because of reactions like this that I don't often make jokes on this site and why I come across as robotic.
This site--like DDO--allows people to argue for pedophilia, to post sexually risque content so long as it doesn't stray into the realm of porn (e.g. threads asking about the best way to masturbate), and to make racially controversial and bigoted statements. Nothing I say to anyone here is something that they could not encounter elsewhere on this site. In fact, nothing I say to anyone here is something that they probably are not already familiar with. I understand you feel strongly about this, but I think you are overreacting.

Are you implying that BLT is not appealing? How wouldn't that make us look good?Do you have a recommendation on what would be used as a write-up to describe why a thread which is about 60% made of jokes about the head mods testicles was nominated that would make us look good to these new users you speak of?

We needed some young people on the moderation team anyway
Hey! I am only 24! I am young, damnit!

@Barney
Out of curiosity, why are only the users given write-ups?
Partly because the format is a holdover from DDO, partly because users are generally seen as more important than the other entries. Just look at the HOF votes--more people voted for users than for the other two categories. People just seem to care most about the users.
However, I am not at all opposed to having write-ups for the other categories. If enough people would like that to be done, I am happy to facilitate that.

Aloha, DART!
We would like to announce that Speedrace will be joining the moderation team as an Assistant Moderator for Forums. His duties in this role will include overseeing the enforcement of restraining orders and forum restrictions as well as keeping a watchful eye over some of the more antagonistic forums to identify potential flamewars before they metastasize. He will also be a second opinion Virt and I can consult with on certain, forum-related matters. He will not be involved with vote moderation in this capacity, nor will he have access to the site's moderation interface.
Speed was selected from among several considered candidates for a few reasons. Chief among those reasons were his relatively high levels of activity, clean moderation record, being generally well-liked by the usership, and consistent respectfulness in engaging with other users. Mike has approved the appointment. I believe Speed is capable of serving impartially and intelligently and that he will be an asset to our moderation team.
Speed was offered this position on the afternoon of October 16th. He accepted the same day. This announcement was delayed so as not to detract from the then-ongoing Hall of Fame process and so as to give Speed time to review the site's conduct rules to prepare for this position. He has not been involved in any moderation activities since accepting this position given that he has only officially become a moderator today.
Moderation is hoping to bring on board one more Assistant Moderator for Voting within the next 6 months, at which point we believe our moderation team will be complete. No further additions are planned, nor do we believe at this time that a moderation team larger than what we have planned will be necessary in the foreseeable future.
If you have any questions, please let me know. Feel free to ask Speed any questions you have at this time or to go to him with any forum-specific issues (e.g. harassment, spam) you might be encountering. Of course, Virt and myself will still be available as well. Again, I'd like to welcome Speed to the team on behalf of moderation, and thank him for agreeing to take on this responsibility.
-Bsh1, Chief Moderator

You might find this quote interestingPosts there are dubiously purposive and the thread invites excessive and repetitive posting.

@Mharman
Hammer was banned over a joke.
Perhaps, but that joke threatened to undermine the validity of the HOF results and RM's inclusion in the HOF. In that sense, I also saw it as a personal attack. If it were a joke, then Hammer should have just acknowledged he was joking. Yet, as recently as the 24th, he was continuing to maintain the fiction that he had launched such a campaign. What he is doing is trolling, but that trolling is excessive and extremely inappropriate in this context. I understand that people disagree with the length of ban, but that's ultimately going to be a subjective call by whomever is making it based on how serious they see the offenses as being. That isn't to say that the length of any ban is unimportant (it is important), but just that I think it is less important than whether someone should have been banned in the first place. I think we both agree that Hammer should have been banned.
I don’t think the offense was worthy of a perma-ban.
No one was perma-banned as a result of any of this HOF controversy. I really want to emphasize that. I banned Spacetime for multi-accounting (repeat offense), making personal attacks (repeat offense), and double-voting in the HOF. Wylted was banned by Castin for launching a campaign to get Supa elected to the HOF and to block Ram and Virt from being elected. And Hammer was banned for the reasons I have mentioned here and elsewhere. All of those bans were temporary, and only three people ended up being punished. No one who was only tangentially involved was punished.

I am not going to ask Virt to step down. Virt apologized to me for his oversight. We have since discussed the issue and agreed a way forward. Virt is a valuable part of my team and I don’t think it would benefit the site to defrock him over this. And ultimately, that’s what it comes down to: does Virt still have a lot to offer the site as deputy mod. I think he does. We are all human; we all err. I certainly do. My handling of the HOF situation has obviously been less than perfect. But despite whatever mistakes are made, I trust Virt’s commitment to this site and his ability to mod fairly, maturely, and regularly, and so I think he should continue in his post.

The update to the Hall of Fame was not delayed due to any concerns about the validity of the result or to post-date any particular thread's posting. No request for a delay was submitted to me in any case. The update was posted when all write-ups were complete.

But in all seriousness, Franklin was banned quite a long time ago, and was banned for posting literally 100+ identical posts in the space of an hour.
No one's posts are always substantive, and fluff is always going to be allowed. There is a big difference between saying "lol" or "+1" or "eh" or whatever here and there, and actually spamming.

@Annie_ESocialBookworm
It is precisely because of these concerns that all mods were sent this message:
The Hall of Fame Nomination Thread will be posted tomorrow night (the 12th). You are free to participate in the process, but as a moderator, there are a few limitations I would ask you to respect. First, please wait until the thread has at least 12 posts total before posting there. Second, please limit the total number of posts made in the thread to just those you need to cast your votes (along with any justifications you may wish to provide for those votes). Third, do not publicly criticize any of the nominees, and do not post vote counts. And, finally, do not actively talk to anyone about the HOF process until both stages are 100% complete. Thanks. This is a C/P'd message to all mods
By burying our votes in the middle of a page, by limiting our presence in the process, and by not criticizing any of the nominees, we could mitigate any impact we had on the election. On DDO, mods were never excluded, and arguably Max had more influence to sway the vote than I do here. But I don’t think mods should be banned from participating just for being mods. I think that the safeguards we implemented were a reasonable alternative step, and I would be open to suggestions on ways to improve these safeguards.

Hall of Fame I
Pursuant to the first Hall of Fame election process, the following are inducted into the DebateArt.com Hall of Fame:
-- Users --
RationalMadman
Without a doubt, RationalMadman is a force to be reckoned with and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Within a year of joining the site, RM became the first person to achieve every single site medal. He was one of the first to be on the top of the leaderboard; he is one of the most prolific users on the site, having completed nearly 200 debates, countless rap battles, music battles, and forum posts. What makes RationalMadman unique is the fact that he’s willing to take debate topics that are unfamiliar to most and is willing to take controversial standpoints. Additionally, he has cast over 300 debate votes, making him one of the most active voters on this site. This metric doesn’t even begin to describe how much impact he has had on the site. Without RationalMadman, this site would be much more pedestrian.-Virtuoso
Virtuoso
Moderating is difficult. Working concurrently with bsh1 on moderator decisions while creating over 50 debates and presenting a magnanimous front to all users regardless of transgressions is nigh impossible. These accomplishments are certainly no easy feat, as I am sure the illustrious Virtuoso can attest. Nevertheless, his earnest enforcement of the CoC and pleasant demeanor toward users has never changed since day 1 of his moderator duties. In addition to creating a welcoming atmosphere for users, his debate activity is also commendable. As I am sure most would agree, DART is in its infancy. Nevertheless, Virtuoso’s mountainous record of over 50 debates is incredible given his other duties. As someone who has debated with him on multiple occasions, I know firsthand his debating prowess and writing skills. Virtuoso is a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame purely for his dedication toward forging a better DART for all to enjoy. For that, I congratulate him on his induction. Thanks, Virt.-blamonkey
DebateArt.com
What can one say about the mysterious Russian in our midst? Well, if he’s a troll farmer worker, he’s certainly an affable one. But then again, Mike (if that’s his real name) would be affable wouldn't he...to gain our trust...?! *shrugs* Without him, this community literally wouldn’t exist. He built this site up from scratch and has worked regularly to update it to meet user demands and needs. He is responsive, friendly, and solicitous. His concern for DART and its community is evidenced by the sheer volume of work he has invested and continues to invest in it. If anyone--and this is no hyperbole--deserves to be included in the inaugural DART Hall of Fame entry, it is the creator of the site. We are fortunate to have someone like him in our midst, one who is willing to volunteer his time as he does for so little recompense, esp. given the vitriol and hostility so often found on the internet. He has more than earned his place here, and I congratulate him on his induction.-bsh1
-- Debates --
Firing Squad is the best form of capital punishment
This was a high-quality debate by two obviously talented debaters--one who I knew well, one who I did not. It clearly generated interest on the site, with a sizable number of comments and multiple votes, and it is a prime example of the civil yet thoughtful debate we want to promote on the site. Lots of interesting clash and clearly well-researched, the excellence of this debate speaks for itself.-bsh1
