“Florida public schools will now teach students that the once constitutionally protected system under which enslavers bought and sold human beings had an apparent upside. In addition to being subjected to maiming, beatings, rape and murder, enslaved Black people “developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”
DeeSantis tries to whitewash slavery in school textbooks. What a sweetheart

They were just grateful to be skilled at picking cotton.

DeSantis did no such thing. Slaves did learn valuable things. Just look at Anthony Johnson. He and 3,700 of other freed blacks became slave owners themselves, over 12,000 collectively.

The alternative to American Oppression would have been a quick death from their African captors with nobody willing to buy conquered tribes. Which is what happened when the UK banned the Atlantic slave trade and African warlords tore the continent apart with European weapons.. There are more living slaves today in Africa than ever existed. Picking between Africa and America is choosing between the lesser of 2 evils.
Ask the Liberians today if America was really that oppressive comparatively. Oh that's right, they can't afford to entertain 1st world bitching and 1st world fake guilt.

That is absolutely an unacceptable point of view.
Would you say the same thing about the Jews sent to the work camps in Nazi Germany?
-->
@IwantRooseveltagain
Probably true.
But not necessarily a compatible synopsis these days.
Slavery helped to shape the modern World.........That's the be all and end all of it.
No going back.

I was stating an incontestable fact. Not a point of view.
This discussion is about the history of blacks in America, not the history of Jews in Nazi Germany. Stick to the topic you introduced.

Turns out that whitemanbad religion doesn't "progress" anything for anybody. Same as Jewmanbad.
Progressives seem to believe that the only “skill” black people can truly learn is perpetual victimhood.

And this adds to the conversation how exactly?

Uh, no. What progressives are reacting to here is the absurdity of ensuring students are taught the upside of enslaving an entire race of people for 400 years.
The question I wonder is, what other than racism would cause someone to hear about this and focus on their grievances with black victimhood rather than the absurdity the article just pointed out?
The floor is yours, looking forward to being enlightened.

[IwantRooseveltagain] That [the truth] is absolutely an unacceptable point of view.
Thanks Trudeau
[Double_ R] And this adds to the conversation how exactly?
It is the stating of this fact that apparently qualifies as "whitewashing slavery" to some disturbed minds such as the illegitimate vice president Kamala Harris.

It substantiates the assertion that being slaves, they learned things that helped them beyond their enslavement whence they became freedmen. Like, DUH!

That is IWRA speciality. Taking cherry-picked snippets from articles, pastes them into a new thread, and ends it with some ignorant commentary about republicans and/or libertarians and/or conservatives. Never any context.

@Double_R
A group of African Americans were on the Florida Department of Education that put this curriculum together.
One of the professors who was on that board made a response to Kamala Harris’ fallacious rant. (Scroll to 2:10 to listen to the professor’’s response correcting the nonsense twisting the reality of what the education sets out to establish)
Even CNN panelists are calling out Kamala Harris’ fake outrage.
White Supremacist groups have claimed that Anthony Johnson, a Black forced laborer who became free in 17th century Virginia, was the first legal slave owner in the British colonies that became the United States. That claim is historically false and misleading.
-->
@FLRW
That’s one helluva strawman argument there. Total FUBAR misinterpretation of the historical facts surrounding that case.
It’s not that Anthony Johnson was the “first legal slave owner,” but rather he was the first to file a legal lawsuit against another for return of his slave. As such, he was the first slave owner to have a court of law affirm his status as a slave owner, as the master of the slave who ran off from His charge, and demanded his return in addition to fees paid to him by the one harboring the escaped slave. The court agreed with Mr. Johnson and the slave was returned to him.

You know it gives me a powerful smirk when people in niche online communities full of people well trained in rhetorical devices try to race bait (which is formally a fallacy of a complex question). Out in the world, when those fascist propagandist (known to the indoctrinated as "media" or "officials") do it, it's really dangerous but here is just utterly ineffective. Like a shark on the beach thrashing around and gnashing its teeth but with nothing to bite.
