Instead of being creative, corporations like Disney are "blackwashing" traditional white characters, to be black like the Little Mermaid. Naturally it is causing backlash. The same as it has been for changing well-established characters like Superman and even 007, James Bond, to be "blackwashed" instead of the obvious solution: create your own new characters and stop ripping off well-established white (or other races) characters. All they are doing is causing further division. It's senseless and unneccesary.
Blackwashing vs Whitewashing. The former is GOOD, the latter is BAD. Hypocrisy 101.

Regardless of whoever or whatever is behind this, the effect is clear: erasure of White culture. This anti-White push replaces White people with Black people. This is an attack on White culture and thus White people. All these statements are descriptive facts about the situation.
Meanwhile, White people are not getting to whitewash other Black people's cultures, such as those found in Kenya, Chad or Mauritania (if you disagree, find me an example). This is purely a double standard which harms only White people.
White people need to stop allowing other races to get away with their various forms of anti-Whitism double standards and start seeing themselves again as a racial group with political interests worth protecting.
Boo hoo, they made a fictional character black. Sure, the original story was Danish or whatever, but mermaids definitionally don't live in Denmark, so they can be whatever ethnicity or mix of ethnicities the creators want. Its like complaining about having black Vulcans in Star Trek. There is no heritage or truth that's being "whitewashed" or "blackwashed."
Personally, I don't care either way. When Idris Elba was cast as Heimdall, I thought it was cool because Idris Elba is cool. When they cast Johnny Depp as Tanto, I thought it was fine because I like Johnny Depp as an actor. I love Hamilton, which famously casts POCs for many roles including Jefferson and Washington, but they're not pretending that Washington was black all along. In The Lone Ranger, Tanto is depicted as Native American. By comparison, the whitewashing of historical figures such as Jesus Christ is a lot more sinister, to the point that some Christians have used the claim that dark skin is the mark of Cain and/or the curse of Ham as a justification of the slave trade and white supremacy, while ignoring the fact that Jesus was Middle Eastern.

What about femiwashing?
Who cares as long as they've got nice tits and a cute arse.
And blackfemiwashing?
Who cares as long as they've got nice tits and a cute arse.
Satire of course, before all you gender/race apologists get on your high horses.
And that was satire too.
And for all you gender/race apologists.
What about transblackfemiwashing?
Who cares as long as they've got nice tits and a cute arse.
Also, satire.
Humans are brilliant.

I don't think white Jesus is so much 'sinister, as a common act of people to depict individuals in their culture like themselves.
It 'can be interesting to see Rule 63 and other changes to original idea in concept art, maybe even finished projects,
Art being free can be fun,
Though often I don't watch remakes because I prefer the original I 'first saw.
I'd suppose people don't like the 'pushy, 'imposing feeling they get from some remakes,
Though such a feeling may be based on creators pushing intentionally, or not, varies.

There are some white heroes that cannot be blackwashed. Eg. Hitler, Trump, Putin, Stalin, Mussolini. Jim Crow.

@Shila
Jim Crow is a fictional character developed and popularized by Thomas Rice, and was most likely based on a black performer.

So all those racist laws were passed by white southern states based on a fictional character. Typical American Culture. Just like MAGA is based on the fictitious success of Trump.

The laws were only named after Jim Crow, some of the laws existed before then and all were merely racist and not motivated by any one depiction of blackface.

*sigh* Jim Crow isn't a person.

I'd have to read up on history to have a stronger opinion, about it and conquerors,
I mean really, world has a lot of conquering, for many reasons.
Eh, even parents give us framework, control,
Though religion 'can be coercive, I'd like to think more a statement on people than religion.
Eh, people influenced by one another.

So Americans will follow any laws if it is named after a person even if it is imaginary. Jim Crow was an imaginary persons name. It was valid.

I'd have to read up on history to have a stronger opinion, about it and conquerors,
well, when you grow up black or latin or asian or arab and you only see pictures of "white jesus" it sort of does a number on you

@3RU7AL
Sure, diverse cultures could probably do a better job of depicting Jesus, or educating people on what we know about his appearance,
Which I 'think is nothing, not something I've looked into before,
I don't really care for crosses or statues of Jesus anyhow,
Feels a cheapening of what he is,
For 'me, I can understand others feeling differently.
I like statues of Greek deities, well enough,
But for me that's because they represent something else.
. . .
Then again, maybe a diverse culture would have a diverse number of Jesus depictions,
And in a nondiverse culture, one will be surrounded by the primary culture anyhow. . .

When whites first saw what Jews looked like in Germany and compared it to pictures of Jesus. It did a number on them. The number was 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust.

How does the character's skin color change the essence of the character? I couldn't care less if Ariel or James Bond are played by POC and see no good reason why anyone else should either. Sans objective evidence Mermaids and fictional secret agents come in only light skin tones, there is nothing objectively wrong being done here.

I'm not really sure in makes sense for James Bond to be black,
Well, maybe if it was a modern day James Bond,
Still it seems a bit an odd casting choice for Bond.
Better to do new secret agent, I'd think,
Like Jackie Chan! The Tuxedo - Wikipedia
. . .
Just feels out of place to me a bit, to have a black Achilles, or John Wayne Genghis Khan,
Though people probably have arguments to claim Achilles was or could have been black,
Also could be studios in some places can't always afford or find right actors for part,
School plays wouldn't need be sticklers on casting, I'd think,
. . .
Even some plays in history had men acting as women,
Though that's more the role acted in, than the role being switched.

I'm not really sure in makes sense for James Bond to be black,
Why not? Would the 00 program not have black agents?
-->
@SkepticalOne
Wouldn't surprise me if they did,
They probably have female agents as well,
Could make the same argument for a Julia Bond,
Maybe if they wrote a 'really banger script for a black or female Bond, I could see it,
But I'm pretty used to Bond as a white British guy,
Often though, it seems more like virtue signaling, the reason for some cast choices in movies,
I do say 'seems, as I don' know what's in people's heads.
. . .
Hm, is James Bond supposed to be a 'single person, or a position?
If it's a position, it's a harder position to argue against, and like I said, if people have a 'good script, could be good,
Though I'm pretty used to Bond as a white British guy,
If Bond is supposed to be the same individual though,
People get used to a look often, even hair color in some cases,
Though Bond's changes it seems.

Actually, in the original Danish story, her skin was green, the Character has been whitewashed and blackwashing, it's green people that should be outraged.

I've understood 007 to be a 'position' just like his CIA counterpart Felix Leiter ...who has been recast more times than Bond (including POC).
Though I'm pretty used to Bond as a white British guy,
'What you're used to' is not an argument, my friend.

"A popular fan theory claims that James Bond is a codename assigned to whichever agent is serving as 007, and while it's clever, it's incorrect."
Course there were also some web pages that argued James Bond 'was a code name,
007, I could believe to be a code number,
But I 'think (Am not certain) that there is only one James Bond,
Like there is only one Superman,
Even if there is Superman in older era movies,
And Superman in new era movies,
Just his position in time changed,
Not the person.
I don't think that the character of James Bond has a history of being played by different races or lifestyle choices,
Seems odd to me, to change it,
Characters have a look, an identity.

Ian Fleming invented the character and according to his
books, which I read many years ago, James Bond was English and white. Fleming
even objected to Sean Connery playing him because he was Scottish.

Considering that most if not all of the characters you listed are gleaned from ancient mythologies--especially Ariel and Superman--complaining about the extent to which these figures have been "washed" is an exercise in futility.

...and yet, Sean Connery was one of the best, if not THE best, Bond.
That being said, there is a valid argument in sticking with the template the author intended. Me personally though, I see skin color makes little difference to the character. He is still a massively skilled secret agent with fancy gadgets.

I liked Sean Connery as Bond and he has since proven himself
to be a fine actor. I did like Daniel Craig in Casino Royal though.
The books were of their time and were quite racist and sexist. There have been a few demands for a black person to play Bond and I don’t really have a problem with this providing the actor is chosen on merit, not simply because they happen to have dark skin. Interestingly there have been no demands for an Asian or an East Asian Bond; it’s always for a black one.
