I'd say that what's sad about it has more to do with failing to recognize good speaking style alongside good content. Too little of debate these days is focused on how well someone performs, and while I agree that focusing too much on performance art is a problem, I'd say that the balance of content and performance is something that should be prized. I think we lose something when debate becomes too technical and too fast for most audiences to process. It may be inevitable for many, but I don't think that it should be.
