@ GP
no way! I am so jealous!
I met Tennessee Williams' little brother once when he was drunk and in drag but he wasn't interested in talking about writing.
Ken Burns lives in Telluride and is sort an unofficial mascot of the Telluride Film Festival. When I volunteered there last year, Burns made a point of coming over and talking to me and so we talked about Foote briefly. Burns can quote long passages from that book from memory.

@Crocodile
Is your character Union or Confederate?
-->
@oromagi
Foote is considered part of that generation of great Southern writers including Faulkner, WIlliams, Warren. He wrote as a broken-hearted Southerner whose analysis of race, slavery, Southern rights eventually challenges and tears down each of his deeply rooted patriarchal, romantic beliefs. Ultimately, his condemnation of Succession and modern racism is more authentic and personal than any other.
Faulkner is one of the greats, for Foote to be in his league in terms of writing must make him powerful, especially the way you describe his condemenation of someone who lived and fought for a justly defeated cause
When Foote says narrative he means it. The battles unfold with thrilling drama and detail, minor characters are constantly rising and falling. The writing is exquisitely clear and evocative. He did all of his writing with an ink pen.
This is the kind of writing I live for, rapid and high stakes w/ momentous character development via decisive action

I was a teenager so I didn't appreciate the moment, He was a very quiet serious person.

@SirAnonymous
confederate, town

@MisterChris
It's a big purchase so I'd recommend giving your money to a small bookstore (as opposed to Amazon) if possible.

My dad talked to him at length as a fan and I mostly just listened. We were visiting one of the battlefields because my Dad was a Civil War nut and took us everywhere to all the battlesites from Vicksburg to Gettysburg.
-->
@Greyparrot
I visited Fort Sumter and Gettysburg. You are pretty lucky to see Vicksburg
-->
@SirAnonymous
I would also recommend Bruce Catton's Civil War trilogy and James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom.
I liked McPherson a lot. I've never read Catton.
Day 1: 12:58 PM
- Off the bat, Pie confirms there is a theme split.
- Oromagi starts with a quiz on everybody’s affiliation.
Results so far, copy-pasted from SirAnon:
“Claims so far:
Supa: Union (good general in some aspects, hates him based onpersonal preference)
oro: Confederate
Chris: Union
Speed: Confederate
Bear: Union
TNBinc: Union (hethinks)
That1: Confederate
SirAnonymous: Union
Grey: hated town. I didn't think he specified which side.”
VERDICT 1: A Confederate/Union split does not make sense. It has to be something more nuanced, like a Heritage split, Success split, or War Crimes split.
VERDICT 2: Oromagi immediately displays pro-town behavior, as does SirAnon.
- My status as a centaur is immediately outed.
VERDICT: Neigh
- TNBinc asks nooby questions. Supa speculates that this is a town tell. SirAnon agrees.
VERDICT: Probably a noob town.
- BearMan says he had to deal with an account hack. Is this a coverup of discussing strategy with the mafia before speaking? Not sure. But for now I am willing to believe him.
- TNBinc starts lynch campaign on Bear.
“SupaDudz voted for BearMan to be removed. Then, Oro voted SupaDudz to be removed. Are Oro and BearMan mafia? It seems Oro is trying to "Protect" Bearman.”
While true, I would need more convincing.
VERDICT: No opinion
- Campaign on Croc starts due to his inactivity.
VERDICT: I smell something scummy.
- Oromagi comments on my failure to answer the “Blue vs Grey” question. I actually did answer it here: https://www.debateart.com/forum/topics/4722/post-links/197183. I am UNION and win with town.

He was a very quiet serious person.
I see why he was
My dad talked to him at length as a fan and I mostly just listened. We were visiting one of the battlefields because my Dad was a Civil War nut and took us everywhere to all the battlesites from Vicksburg to Gettysburg.
This is amazing

@oromagi
I like to purchase things from local businesses as often as I can. I hate to see small businesses slowly choke from large corporations
My dad talked to him at length as a fan and I mostly just listened. We were visiting one of the battlefields because my Dad was a Civil War nut and took us everywhere to all the battlesites from Vicksburg to Gettysburg.
and Foote was just hanging around the battlefield. That so awesome.
I was a kid in DC so I know Gettysburg and Harper's Ferry and Hampton Roads pretty well. I used to play a lot of those old Avalon Hill military strategy games with all the little chits so I feel like I know some battlefields intimately. I would really like to see Shiloh and Chattanooga and I wish I had a month to walk Stonewall Jackson's campaign in the Shenandoah Valley (mostly because of Foote's description of that time and place).
@GP
Did I miss your blue/grey claim or are you holding out?

BTW Oro, if you didn't catch it:
