When the chemical energy held within the battery is exhausted, it ceases to produce electrical energy.
The battery remains intact.
And in certain circumstances can be recharged.

The battery still remains functional.....Can be recharged with energy, or used for artistic purposes as described.

As the battery is just the container.
Of course the container might eventually be broken down or even recycled.....It is at this point that the battery will cease to exist.
Just like when you die (run out of life), your body will still remain until such time as it decomposes or is cremated.
