(Ok Budda, I've applied your one reroll changes)

Before the group decides to head in for the night, they go to check on the children. When the front door is open, they see no sign of the children. They also see no sign of the rest of the village as a thick, opaque wall of fog surrounds the house. A sudden gust of wind blows them back and the front door slams shut.

Of the group, only Eikka finds herself able to read the magical writings. They are a scroll of bless, protection from poison, and spiritual weapon.

(Rules for using spell scrolls:

  • Can only be read/used by the class whose spell list the spell is on;
  • No material components required;
  • Cast in the normal casting time;
  • One use;
  • If the spell is of a higher level than that you can normally cast, you must succeed on a ability check using your Spell casting ability, DC = 10 + the spell's level.)
The group huddles together for the night, taking various watches and sleep into a deep slumber with disturbing dreams...

Under raging storm clouds, a pale man stands silhouetted against the walls of an ancient castle. Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The wind's howling increases as he turns his gaze down toward the village of Barovia.

Far below, yet not beyond his keen eyesight, a party of adventurers has just entered his domain. His face forms the barest hint of a smile as his dark plan unfolds. He knew they were coming, and he knows why they came -- all according to this plan. A lightning flash rips through the darkness, but the man is gone. Only the howling of the wind fills the midnight air.

Day 2.
Time: Morning.
Weather: Foggy.

it seems we've missed a room on the 2nd floor so we should check that just to be sure.
(all the rooms on the 3rd are exposed so we've searched them all?  If not I start at the 3rd and work down)

I agree, let's scour the house for clues, see if there is anything else to find before heading to the basement. It might be worth checking to see if the storm from last night has cleared up and if the children are still safe, although, they might have been illusions 😐

I check the house with Roberts

Snerp and Roberts check the remained of the second floor.

2nd Floor, south east room: An undecorated bedroom contains a pair of beds with straw-stuffed mattresses. At the foot of each bed is an empty footlocker. Tidy servants' uniforms hang from hooks in the adjoining closet. A dumbwaiter in the corner of the west wall has a button on the wall next to it.

2nd Floor, west Room: Gossamer drapes cover the windows of this elegantly appointed hall, which has a brass-plated chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Upholstered chairs line the walls, and stained-glass wall hangings depict beautiful men, women, and children singing and playing instruments.
A harpsichord with a bench rests in the northwest corner. Near the fireplace is a large standing harp. Alabaster figurines of well-dressed dancers adorn the mantelpiece.

Outside the house, the domineering fog remains, and there is no sign of the children.

Also, wasn't there a 4th floor to this place? I remember seeing 4 floors when we first approached the house. We should check the 3rd floor for an attic entrance. It might be a drop down ladder to get up there.

I head to the third floor and begin looking for an entrance to the top floor

(Drafter did an investigation check and referred back to the view from outside the house. There was 4 floors, not just 3)

look in the dumb waiter, search new discovered rooms, then go back up to the 3rd and assist with the search, though I think there's only 3 floors.

(I'll wait for merlin and Earth to respond and catch up before posting your search results. But I will note that you have yet to find an entrance to any basement at this point either)

Hey won't the gnome fit in the dumb waiter?

Brilliant idea! Instead of searching from below(the attic) or above(the basement) for the entrance, I can open it up from the other side 👌

(Didn't even notice we hadn't found an entrance to the basement. Yet the kids said their parents had locked a monster in the basement, hrmmmmm 🔍)

(let's search for the way up on the 3rd floor first, if that fails we'll try the dumbwaiter. I would have said hell no if I hadn't of changed my spells to at least give me a little more offensive ability. Nobody has a revive yet, so if one of us dies right now they're pretty well screwed lol 😂)

The party searches the third floor for any entrance to another floor. After searching along the walls they uncover a hidden panel door. It pushes
open easily to reveal a cobweb-filled wooden staircase leading up to the attic.

Let's consider this a moment.  We were given information that encouraged us to go to the 3rd floor and stay away from the basement.  Having encountered what we have and learned from what we have found I think we are being manipulated and used.  I think we were led to that ghost to vanquish it on someone or something else behalf.  If there's anything in the attic that doesn't attack us we should let it be until we check the basement.

We were given information that encouraged us to go to the 3rd floor and stay away from the basement.

(The information wasnt "given" in the sense of for free, or from anythimg but my characters proficienciea. It was  the result of an investigation check 👌.

It was done automatically though,so you might have a point that Drafter is nudging us somewhere, but if he is it's probably to move the story along imho. Plus, the information provided, in line with investigation as a skill, was already known/deducable from present information)

I mean the story given to us by the children, the note that started this all.  Remember what the first note said, that his wife was ill....

We have found no ill wife and no baby, and now the children can't be found.

The other note and evidence said this happened 200 years ago, if that's true how did the Currier bring us the original note and how could it have been possibly been addressed to our wizard?
