Is civilian warfare self-defense?

Much is said about Israel's right to defend itself whenever civilian casualties are brought up.

So while there might be potential arguments to justify attacks killing noncombatants, I find it hard to buy that self-defense is one of them.

This claim is vague (“much is said”— who said? What is said?) and distorted— no one, to my knowledge, is claiming that Israel kills civilians out of self defense. Israel targets Hamas combatants out of self defense, but they entrench themselves within, among, and underneath non-combatants. Because of this, it is impossible to effectively fight Hamas without incurring non-combatant casualties, which is very different from claiming, “We are defending ourselves, so we can target civilians.”

That is the same reason the Nazi gave for the Holocaust..that Jews were hiding among the civilian population.
