Faith is either based upon confidence or brainwashing.
Would you say that confidence is better than being brainwashed? And why cant we have both? Confidence can give us power, and brainwashing can make us immune to facts.

Though outcomes are still uncertain
Would you say that Christians can be good people? Are they more likely to be bad? Personally, I dont trust Christians and muslims, because they have molested me before, but I guess people can change.

To have no position makes you an atheist because if you have no position then by definition, you do not believe in a god.

Define it as something else?! You mean define it as something other than what atheists, who don't believe it no matter what you call it, says it is? No.

GOD = BIG BANG

still not a theist

I have skipped through most of this thread so can someone let me know why the answer to the question “do atheists believe in gods” is yes and no? It should be no all the time unless you define god as something else.
nearly all people who call themselves "atheists"

understand that some things (like the sun) are considered "gods" and that those things obviously exist

that's not what they're talking about when they say "i don't believe in god"

an atheist is simply - NOT-A-THEIST

are you a THEIST ?

if the answer is "no"

that makes you an atheist

Yeah I agree with that, thats why I was confused why people are not understanding what atheism really is. This word play with what god is and what is considered to be god to some people and then that it exist is just waste of time.

Do atheists believe no gods exists?

Yes or no.
some do and some don't

there is no test or qualifying gate-keeper

that controls who gets to call themself

an atheist

Atheism refers to THEISM. Theism refers to god as creator or designer or ruler of the universe. ALL ATHEISTS DO NOT BELIEVE IN GODS OF THIS KIND. It does not matter if the Sun is your God and I know the sun exists. I still believe the sun exists but i dont believe the sun exist as a GOD. Theres no atheists that are THEISTS. If you are a theist you believe in a creator and thats what god is. EVERY KIND OF OTHER DEFINITION OF GOD is irrelevant to atheism and theism. So the answer to your question do atheists believe in gods will always be NO. If they do they are not atheists. If you define god as something else like drugs, sex, sun, jupiter, doesn’t matter, we are no longer talking about atheism.

@RaymondSheen
this was interesting and mercifully brief

i've heard a version of this from ben shapiro

basically,

all morality comes from YHWH

and sure, you can strip away the church stuff

but you can only do that because

you learned how to not become serial killers who eat babies

from YHWH

(not exactly sound logic)

In 539 B.C., the armies of Cyrus the Great, the first king of ancient Persia, conquered the city of Babylon. But it was his next actions that marked a major advance for Man. He freed the slaves, declared that all people had the right to choose their own religion, and established racial equality. These and other decrees were recorded on a baked-clay cylinder in the Akkadian language with cuneiform script.

Known today as the Cyrus Cylinder, this ancient record has now been recognized as the world’s first charter of human rights.

It is translated into all six official languages of the United Nations and its provisions parallel the first four Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Spread of Human Rights

From Babylon, the idea of human rights spread quickly to India, Greece and eventually Rome. There the concept of “natural law” arose, in observation of the fact that people tended to follow certain unwritten laws in the course of life, and Roman law was based on rational ideas derived from the nature of things.
Documents asserting individual rights, such as the Magna Carta (1215), the Petition of Right (1628), the US Constitution (1787), the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (1789), and the US Bill of Rights (1791) are the written precursors to many of today’s human rights documents.

I say I don't know like you could say you don't know or can't answer yes or no . Even when you say both you're still answering with those two applicable answers .

It's more direct than dancing around the question with all these other things I wasn't asking. I was direct in saying I'm unable to answer it. I didn't speak around the issue, didn't try to explain something that wasn't directly asked .

If I did know the answer, I would of just said yes or no or directly say I can't answer yes or no but I can answer yes and no. If you'd request an explanation, I'd give it but I want to be direct up front .

I understand that socially people tend to be loose with answering questions unlike a courtroom so people tend to just respond whatever how they wish or think not technically answering, just responding. Got to refocus on being direct as possible.

So I ask people for a direct yes or a no. I would give a direct yes or no when you ask me.

This is why you're filibustering instead of answering the question with a yes or no. If you don't know just be direct with that at least. This is what I was trying to teach somebody else on here.

You are asking for a yes or no answer to a question in which the actual answer is neither a yes or a no. Why is that so difficult for you? I wasn’t dancing around the question, I’m trying to educate you as to where your why your question is ill formulated.

Here, let’s try another example. Tell me whether the following sentence is True or False:

“This sentence is false”

Do you see the problem here?

If I did know the answer, I would of just said yes or no or directly say I can't answer yes or no but I can answer yes and no.
Yes and No when answering the same question in the same sense (as your question was formulated) is a logical contradiction. To claim that as an acceptable meaningful answer is to either abandon the English language or abandon the very notion of rational thought.

People are people and variously adopt conscious operating systems, to which they apply various labels.

Trust is based upon character judgement and labels are not necessarily indicative of either good or bad characteristics.

If uncertain, talk about the weather or fluffy kittens, and avoid mentioning religion.

Atheism is a form of theism. Like monotheism, henotheism, polytheism, deism, agnosticism. From the Greek theos (god/s) and ismos (doctrine, theory, system, or practice) like racism materialism, coloquilism. It is the doctrine or theory of no god/s. Without god/s. Monotheism is 1 god, polytheism is multiple gods, henotheism is 1 God plus gods (Bible writers), atheism is 0 gods.

Atheists believe they have no gods.

Atheist: Atheism means no gods.

Theist: Is the Big Bang a god?

Atheist: Yes.

Theist: Then you are a type of theism.

Atheist: I have no gods.

Theist: That's okay, you don't have to have a god for theism.
