When I first entered this website, I created debates on topics that were very interesting to me. Since I was completely unfamiliar with debate etiquette and structure, I decided to jump right into it. Learn on the job. After about a week (since Monday I believe), I have learned much more about how to debate than ever in my life. My first three debates were very spontaneous and quick to start. There were early mistakes of mine made in those debates, which burdens me with trying even harder to win. Not that I regret my choices, they were amazing learning experiences and humbling for me.
I thank the moderators and leaders for creating this website which is full of opportunity for intellectual debates. I thank the users for all of the comments and discussions that were posted revolving around my first debates. They were very insightful. This debate will be taken very methodically by me. I want this one to be a proper debate on my part. For "big-time debators," please do not hesitate to share if I am debating stupidly in the comments section, and I ask ahead of time for any guidance you have available.
Sir.Lancelot is correct - the contender forfeiting the first round of a debate where they choose the topic is grounds for auto-loss on conduct alone.
No problem - always happy to help.
You win by default. (Just announce it in the 2nd round in your following reply.)
If the topic is not established within the first round and Con forfeits, you can declare an auto loss.
It’s recommended you include in the description, “No forfeiting,” but it’s not a requirement.
I understand, Austin. Thank you for you help--greatly appreciated
By waiving, it means you give up the round without technically forfeiting - that way voters will know that it's not your fault you have nothing to say.
For example, something like, "My opponent has the responsibility to provide the topic, which he has failed to do. As such, I will waive this round and wait for my opponent's response. I urge voters to view this as poor conduct by my opponent."
BTW, taking the role of CON doesn't work - the instigator always starts first.
By "waiving" do I simply forfeit the first round?
In hindsight, I think it would have been best if I assumed the role of Con so my opponent would start first. Lol
Now that it already started, there's not much you can do. If the contender doesn't reply with a topic, then waive the first round - it's a slight disadvantage, but voters will award you conduct points as compensation.
This is why you should make a rule requiring the instigator to waive the first round, and the contender to waive the last round, for these kind of debates.
Does anybody know what should happen if Con does not choose a topic?
Hey, what is the topic you have chosen for our debate?
That is not bad. Though it is ultimately up to Con to choose their subject for the debate
How about, "The US should not have bombed Japan at the end of WWII."
