We need a good GOT thread...

30 minutes and 3 hours should be options for the length of time between rounds.

I posted the HOF thread as a way of reminding me to return to it a year from now. Its stated rules reflect those pillars I put forward in this thread.

About the Hall of Fame
Welcome to the DebateArt.com (DART) Hall of Fame! The Hall of Fame honors the very best users, debates, and threads this site has to offer. The Hall of Fame, as an institution, honors a tradition begun on another site, and hopes to continue a legacy of lauding the arts of debate and rhetoric, which are the basis of this site.
Each year, beginning in October 2019, the site usership shall nominate and elect three inductees into each of the three award categories (users, debates, and threads). The election will occur in two phases, a nomination phase and a voting phase. The nomination phase puts forward nominees for induction, and the voting phase selects which of the nominees will ultimately be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Each inducted user will be honored with a write up (not to exceed 1,000 characters) by a respected site user, honoring the inductee's character, achievements, and contributions to DART.
It is our wish that, as a community, people will always come to DART to engage in an honest, curious, and vigorous exploration of ideas. This site is unique among social websites in that it places special emphasis on intellect and rhetoric. DART's mission is to be a place where people can come to learn, to discuss, and to grow as thinkers and communicators. The Hall of Fame, at its best, is a testament to that mission, and strives to recognize those debates, threads, and users which add most significantly to the fabric of this amazing community.

Just because it is insulting does not make it an insult, per se. The term "delude" means "mistaken," with a connotation implying that the mistake is severe or that its maker willfully overlooks the facts. Calling someone mistaken can be insulting, but it can also be demonstrated (meaning it can be shown to be true or likely true). The truth is an absolute defense in this case. If no effort at demonstration is made, then the accusation of delusion trends towards being a genuine insult.

@EtrnlVw
The use of the term deluded may or may not constitute a personal attack depending on the context. If you have concerns about a specific situation, please notify me in private so that I can evaluate the situation and take action if action is appropriate.

I agree that he's attractive (are you gay?), but Kit Harrington is the hottest. I also don't find Jaime's character arc nearly as compelling as, say, Tyrion's or as likable as, say, Daenarys'.

Noted. Nevertheless, there will come a time when a HOF is needed. I view this as forward planning.
Created:
Posted in:
So, here we go again:
- Starting from a clean slate
- Linking to the old HOF
- Implementing the HOF sometime in October 2019
- Inductions held annually
- Same two-stage election method as on DDO
- Same categories as on DDO
Any final thoughts or comments? I'll hope to finalize the plan by tomorrow.

@Imabench
I take your point, and I think it's a good one. Do you think that, once an HOF is eventually started up, that nominations should be made by some sort of committee, to ensure a higher "quality" of nominees?

As I see it, the existence of such a forum is primarily one of site features (since a new, specific forum would need to be created for it). It is only secondarily a moderation issue. That said, to a large extent you are correct here, and I would certainly strongly oppose the existence of such a forum. An unmoderated forum could lead to flamewars elsewhere on the site, which would make my job more difficult and which may harm the site's welfare.No sir. As I understand the setup, it falls on you. Mike can amend or veto a decision of yours, but until he does, the buck stops with you.

I have recommended an update version of the policy to Mike. It will be up to him to implement it or not. I am sure commentary will follow once it is posted--that's fine. The site's policy is always up for scrutiny.
Created:
I do not support the existence of such a forum. I fear it may lead to enmity that may spill over into other fora. Ultimately, it falls to Mike to make the call.

@RationalMadman
Do you have an alternative method for HOF selection in mind?
Created:

So, a few voices have spoken about delaying the HOF election even more than 6 months. So, I'll amend my original three-point framework:
- Starting from a clean slate
- Linking to the old HOF
- Implementing the HOF sometime in June
That leads me to pose some additional questions. Should HOF elections be every 6 months or every year? Should the election system that existed on DDO be retained as it was? Should we include write-ups? Should we include all the same categories that existed on DDO? Should we add any categories?

Final call for input on those 3 points, or any of the broad issues discussed thus far.

Yeah, I figured it was best to tone it down. Hence the switch from my old profile picture to my current one. On DDO, people used to PM me about how my soul was doomed and how I was corrupting the youth with my avatars; it was pretty funny. People also used to report my profile pictures all the time.
I think I might still have a "fun" week now and then, but those will have to be by far the exception. A certain amount of self-restraint has to be expected in that regard.

@Castin
I will be reviewing the proposed changes in more detail this weekend. I have not dismissed them entirely, and intend on submitting some recommendations to Mike for consideration. I cannot say what changes I will endorse, or how extensive those changes might be that I endorse, but I will give it serious thought.

It'd be great to have that little flame indicator to mark popular threads (threads with 30 or more posts) like there is on DDO.

Hi. I am bish. I am a mod. I like simple sentences. And abs.

So, I feel that the consensus of opinion is that DDO's HOF should not be transferred to this site (starting from a clean slate). I do like Vaar's suggestion of linking to DDO's HOF, however, as a nod to the heritage of the HOF. I am also getting the sense that a delayed implementation is desired, somewhere between 6 months and 1 year.
I would like, then, to get everyone's thoughts on the following sketch:
- Starting from a clean slate
- Linking to the old HOF
- Implementing the HOF sometime in April
If this sketch is acceptable, then there are several other questions which I would like to pose. But I'll wait to see if this basic outline meets with approval.

Yeah. But everyone has an assignment which will cause a breakdown or something similar. But, it's important to maintain healthy habits.

Yes, if they can provide a sufficient RFD. One reason why mods explain why a vote was removed is so that voters can improve their voting practices. A voter might have a perfectly good reason for voting as they did, but just happened to explain it poorly. So, again, yes, a voter may re-vote as long as their re-vote meets the voting standards.

@Castin
It sounds like you were a rebel back on DDO, bish. You'll have to tell me a wild story or two sometime.
Oh the halcyon days of yesteryear...
I was never quite a rebel, except to the extent that I could be considered a bit risque in my commentary and choice of avatar. Rather, as DDO President, I was considered a bit over involved by some (though not all). I tried to run a lot of programs like new user outreach and tournaments, and that led some to conclude that I was overbearing.
Created:

@Castin
But I gather you're saying this scenario
You gathered correctly, though if the recommended course of action were a ban, rather than a warning or a loss of voting privileges or something like that, I would be obliged to take a closer look. But certainly assistant mods can speed up the process and help me triage issues.
I also think your stance will cause people to talk more about bans, not less.
If it becomes an issue, I am willing to reconsider. I will proceed, for the time being, without a public ban log (though a private one will be maintained for moderation's own records) until such a time as it is clear that the site would benefit from one.

It's there mostly as a reminder to act in a civil fashion, and not to direct invective against others. I doubt it will be enforced except in extreme cases.
