Suppose he was just a random person who was trying to steal your car by towing it, you're still only allowed to reasonable force to prevent it. So, for example, could you have driven the car away, or prevented him from hooking up the car, or was it too late? Could you have just unhooked it?
Also, how did it play out? You punched him, but then the neighbours called the police, that must have taken a while for them to arrive. Did the fight continue, or did he back off?
I hope you don't mind me asking these questions.
