Questions
Is there a timeline on when character limits could be implemented for debates? Id be more then happy to put out 4 or 5 debate ideas that have been swimming around in my head, but I want to be able to keep the debates brief so that readers dont feel like their doing PhD research when deciding how to vote.

Abortion Remains Illegal in Argentina
-->
@JusticeWept
The thing that caught my attention was that if ANY Latin American country was going to green light abortion during the 1st trimester, it would definitely be Argentina..... The fact that it got halfway through their version of Congress is noteworthy by itself, but the continued erosion of the authority of the catholic church in the country makes me think abortion will eventually end up legalized int he country. If I had to guess, I would think it would be sometime in the next 10-15 years.

DeSantis monkey this up
-->
@Buddamoose
It wasnt being used as a noun, which is what the racist usage is
Racial words or phrases used against a particular race don't necessarily lose their nefarious quality of referring to a race just because the word is used in a different form..... Just as an example, the word 'queer' can be used as a slur against LGBT people, yet if you walk into a persons house and say 'you got a lot of queer shit in here', the word still carries a bit of weight as a possible slur depending on the situation, even though its being used as an adjective rather than a noun....

Like DeSantis with the monkey remark, there are a lot of other words that could be used instead of 'queer' in the example I used, so a person who still decides to use the word 'queer' to describe something could be an underhanded insult, albeit depending on other circumstances.

How is it DeSantis fault that you think "black people" upon hearing the word "monkey"?
Last I checked it was people of DeSantis's political ideology who still try to attach the word 'monkey' to black people in an attempt to make them seem subhuman. Ex: Roseanne Barr

LSD should be decriminalised.
I would be open to LSD being legal for medical purposes, the way marijuana currently is in many states, but Im still pretty hesitant about decriminalizing it outright. A little bit of LSD could impair someone ability to drive safely on a far lower dosage compared to alcohol, and while its hard to overdose from it directly, there are still many ways for people to get hurt by its legalization through second-hand affairs.

What crawled up your ass and bit down hard? The 25 hour remark was just taking a jab at Sadolite who chose to basically bump a borderline-dead thread to make an insult that barely surpasses what a 6th grader could think of...... Which was now stupendously eclipsed by the fact that he bumped a thread that was indeed dead for 5 days just to continue making a senile idiot out of himself.

On a side note, I told my liberal coworker about this and her response was "yeah but he's done a bunch of other stupid shit today."

DeSantis monkey this up
The thing about the 'monkey this up' remark is that he could have phrased what he probably intended to say at least 50 different ways that would better and clearly state what he was saying, yet he still chose to go with THAT one. Even with the use of the word monkey, he could have easily phrased it a way to make it more natural and convey the message hw was trying to say, such as referring to a monkey wrench as the easiest example.

Its somewhat of an embarrassment to start the general election with, but there are way worse things that have been said by other people. It'll probably blow over in a week unless DeSantis is stupid enough to do it repeatedly (which is admittedly possible since he is a die-hard support of Trump)

Actually wait, I was wrong....... Gillum managed to clean up in Miami Beach and got all the heavily populated areas like Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville, while Graham picked up the more rural counties in between..... Levine only grabbed a few counties in SW Florida: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/08/28/us/elections/florida-primary-elections.html

He either had some sort of mega-effective grassroots campaign in big cities, or was carried by the Ocasio-Cortez saga. Given how he had support in major cities, I'm more inclined to think the former now.

@Greyparrot
Do you think the media blitz on Ocasio-Cortez has something to do with the outcome?
I cant think of any other reason tbh.

Gillum has went on record saying he was the only non-millionaire candidate running for the governorship, which in Florida is almost a suicide move because television advertising in this state is crazy expensive. On top of that, the fact that the left-leaning Miami corridor had their own local candidate (Philip Levine is the governor of Miami Beach) with Graham infiltrating everywhere else means that Gillum had to have gotten attention via proxy of something else, which could very well be the Ocasio-Cortez saga.

I'm not sure he'll go further left in the general election and will try to move closer to the center, but the thing is he has started so far from the left in the first place that any substantial movement towards the center could very well piss off his own support base, unless Trump's approval record suddenly nosedives by 20 points right before midterms actually take place

(I know its a vox article but bare with it, im just using it cause it was the first thing that came up in the search results)

For those of you who don't pay attention to decisions that Florida makes, which is perfectly excusable thanks to the craziness of the state, something quite remarkable did happen recently that from what I could tell no one saw coming

In the Democratic party's primary election for governor Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum came out on top, beating out Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine, and former congresswoman Gwen Graham. Andrew Gillum can be characterized as pretty far to the left on the political spectrum, since he has gone on record saying he wants to Abolish ICE, Have Medicare for All, Go with Single Payer Healthcare on the national level, and a $15 minimum wage (though given the expensiveness of all things Floridian, this last one may seem quite tame)

He beat out Philip Levine, not surprising, and also beat out Gwen Graham, who was considered the front runner for the longest time and is also the daughter of former Florida Senator + Florida Governor Bob Graham. Gwen Graham right up to election day led over Gillum by 7 points. No independent poll even had Gillum close to the lead by the time the election came around either.

This sets him up with the heavily Pro-Trump GOP candidate Rob DeSantis in the general election for FL Governor, essentially making the contest a proxy campaign between Trump and Sanders, who endorsed and celebrated the corresponding candidates' victories. Given how senile and disconnected from reality some of the older members of Florida can be, it would be stunning if Gillum managed to go 2 for 2 and win the governor race for Florida.

@Castin
There def isnt a person that everyone trusts on here in general, let alone one trusted enough to be a mod... When Airmax was given mod status on DDO it was only because of an endorsement and universal praise by the previous mod innomen, who was basically a godfather of DDO from its earliest creation. A candidate worthy of being mod isnt going to be someone who naturally rises above the rest of the community, it'll be someone who starts off with nothing but a chance who can only work their way up amongst the community by how they handle the job.

It might not be a bad idea to create TWO mods who would balance each other out, that way if one rushes to a rash decision the other could try to reign them in if they feel its appropriate. After a while if one mod proves himself and the other becomes a tad inactive, then that first person become the main mod and we have our version of Airmax

Moving More Quickly on Moderation
I doubt anyone would trust my ass with moderation, but since ive been on the other side of it to have a good idea of how it could go down to resolve things pretty well.

1) Immediate shutdown of any flamewars or communication with each other

First thing to do that works really well is just have the warring parties shut down whatever war they are flaming in public, with immediate bannign if they dont oblige. Usually the side that feels they are the victim will oblige, and because those who start it in the first place often play the victim card, they will oblige as well. Once all parties involved have quieted down (usually its two main ones), the mod can sort out behind the scenes who fucked up more and whether or not a ban is in order

2) Deletion of the thread the flamewar went down in

Flamewars in threads have a nasty habit of getting bumped again after an extended period of time by people who either want to just stir some shit up, or by one of the original flamers who are trying to score points for some reason after the flamewar ended. Deleting the thread also eliminates the ability of other users to see the drama that went down, and the less drama the better when a situation has escalated too far.

3) If a ban is in order, give about one hours notice to the parties involved

A straight temp ban from the mod once he makes up his mind can occasionally cause someone in a recent flamewar to lose his shit and try to circumvent a temp ban with an alternate account. Giving them a heads up that you've made a decision and that they have an hour to brace themselves usually pacifies the banned party enough to tie up loose ends in misc conversations they were in, rather then fight the temp ban to the last moment and hold a grudge about it later.

4) Restraining Orders, maybe.

RO's can be pretty useful to use, but due to the small nature of the base on this site, it might be a bit early to ban certain users from talking to each other about ANYTHING just because theyve fought in the past. If two users in an RO are in a thread together but are just talking to other people in the thread, it can still cause a hell of a lot of attention between the two. Just one perceived line referring to something vague could be taken as a dig at the other person in the RO and cause them to think it was just violated and that they have a free opportunity to fire back, leading to another powder keg to explode when it might not have even be put there without the RO in the first place.

RO's do come in handy for members who fight each other repeatedly and show that they just cannot get along with each other. And a violation of a RO can make a setup for another temp ban super easy should another incident happen

His best pal doubted him from the off and hid a suitcase knowing it was vital evidence. Do your homework stupid.
10 out of 10 for missing the entire point that just because a persons friends believe something their friend claims, it doesn't make it true since people can be easily manipulated.... But at the same time It's pretty ironic when a complete and utter retard tries to shame someone else for allegedly not knowing the facts about something, only to miss the main point of an argument entirely and throw in a clip off of youtube that they use to make their entire argument for them.

I haven't "built a case" you idiot
Oh thats right you don't know how to read on top of not knowing how to use reason.

I never said you built a case around how the rape happened, dumbfuck, I said that you built your pathetic little attention-seeking thread around the case because it gave you a platform to go on an Islamophobic rant you were just itching to fire off...... Im here to point out that you and ethang have enough retardation for an entire village since you blindly believe the claims made by the Willie Dillie based on literally zero credible evidence whatsoever

 And still you return to a thread that you quit twice.
Feel free to point out where I said I was leaving the thread retard..... I mean it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that someone as senile and demented as you would be able to convince yourself that I would actually say something I didn't say just to reinforce your artificial beliefs towards how other people are.

The only thing I said that comes even close to 'quitting' was when I told Ethang that I would leave him to living in his own sad little world of stupidity, rather then try to help him crawl out of the hole of retardation he wallows in with the hope of one day having him recognize his potential of achieving below-average intelligence...... If you somehow interpret THAT as giving up and leaving the thread, then how you interpret the rest of the world around you explains why you nor Ethang cant see basic facts that a middle schooler can grasp with ease in the first place.

Thats not what the issue is here though..... The issue is that the actual facts of the case you built your pathetic little attention-seeking thread around are also irrelevant to you, despite you and ethang5's consistent crying about wishing someone would point them out to you.

Wilhelmina Ruurdina (Willie) Dille's friends, family and work colleagues have no trouble believing her account of what happened that led to her taking her own life
O.J Simpsons friends had no trouble believing that he didn't commit double murder either, but just because stupid people gather in flocks to believe the same baseless lies from someone they are friends with, it doesn't make their claims actually true..... Its the fact that unbiased sources that actually have the ability to access the evidence (aka the police, investigators, local media) have not found any evidence that she was raped, nor even threatened by a group of Moroccans as she claimed.

@triangle.128k
Crucial jobs such as the medical field should certainly be filled by immigrants as a short-term solution. That being said, the rate at which this occurs should be quite limited at best - which I think is a point we can agree upon.
There's another angle to that which is worth considering though given America's undying pursuit at being #1 at things. If you want to fill crucial jobs such as areas in medical or engineering fields with immigrant labor, it might be best to not just aim for the bare minimum. Nations that are the most powerful nations in the world, whether it be the Roman Empire, Great Britain, or the US, had a remarkable ability of attracting the worlds best and brightest to their own countries rather then rely only on talent that could be cultivated within their own borders...... Great countries monopolize talent from around the world, not just talent from their own citizens.

If the ultimate goal is simply achieving economic self-preservation, taking in the bare minimum of talented immigrants is what you aim for. But if you want to have the absolute highest achievement in those fields that sets a golden benchmark compared to the rest of the world, bringing in as much talent from the outside world as you can is the way to do that, and position the country to continue to remain one of the most powerful nations in the world for decades to come.

China, The World's Next Superpower?
I still think we are drastically overestimating China's military capability in the first place.... This is a country that couldn't formally bring in Taiwan under their scope even though its the size of Maryland which is located about as close to China as Cuba is to Key West.....  Meanwhile the US stubbornly fought in Vietnam on the other side of the world for close to a decade, and when China tried their own invasion of Vietnam along the border they share to the south they called it quits after just 4 weeks (see link 2).....

Hell this is a country whose first aircraft carrier in 1998 was one that was bought off the Russians after the Soviet Union collapsed.... And at one point it almost became a goddamn casino. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_aircraft_carrier_Liaoning

While the US and Russia had its instances of military fuckups despite superpower status (see Vietnam + Afghanistan respectively), China may not even have the capacity to wage a prolonged war in a country that doesnt immediately border them, and even then they could say screw it and pull out after a month https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Vietnamese_War

I'm anti-immigration. Change my mind.
Actually, economists have developed many reliable methods of measuring labor shortages. You can read about some of them here.
Oh neat, I didn't realize they managed to pin it down as well as they could.

I guess now the only argument that could be made is that there wouldn't be much harm in keeping a slight surplus of the number of immigrants needed to curtail labor shortages rather then keep it at a bare minimum, but that argument doesn't work out well either since historically speaking there have more often then not been economic developments resulting in a large number of unemployed people rather than a large number of unfilled vacancies.

Well, yes... that would constitute a labor shortage. Geography is among the most common reasons why labor shortages exist. As I said, I have no issue with immigrants taking jobs that Americans legitimately can't/won't take.
This part was building off the assumption that the geographical qualities of the US might throw off the accuracy of calculating labor shortages and labor needs based on criteria not factored into the original calculation of how much of a labor shortage there is in the first place

most of them conclude that immigration without assimilation is terrible for social stability. Check some of them out herehere, and here.
Those first two links have like 40 pages worth of info that I don't really have the time to go through. If you can pinpoint where in those links the studies address social stability for immigration, that would be helpful.

that doesn't make it any less crucial to maximize the assimilation of first-generation immigrants
Thats true in theory but the reality is that you're not going to be able to achieve 100% assimilation with first generation immigrants, especially if you want to tie immigration to something as large as labor shortages while also considering the pool of people that immigrants usually come from. Even if the first generation of immigrants assimilate rather poorly to US society, later generations achieve far greater success by being more exposed to the language and culture of the US from an early age, making the long term effects of poor initial assimilation for the most part negated.

All of those factors would definitely be taken into consideration when determining cultural compatibility, especially the "speaking English" one
I personally don't mind the 'speak English' aspect, since the language barrier is the biggest barrier to success in economic freedom and educational achievement for new immigrants. My issue though is the inclusion of the other factors people would want to screen against such as religious belief, which goes against what the country stands for since the country was literally founded by people seeing to practice religious freedom. Other factors outside of ability to speak English that could be used to bar immigration could also be needlessly arbitrary, such as an immigrants age, health, family size, or job history.....

if you want to measure an immigrants ability to assimilate into a country, knowledge of how the government works and ability to speak English is fine with me, but also as far as I would go. Anything beyond that for the most part is arbitrary and should not be enforced just because we want to cull down the numbers.

The Jews were the biggest meddlers in the US election but we worry about Russia
I deadass don't even know why we are as closely allied with Israel as we currently are. We constantly stick our necks out for Israel in spite of how much their existence and actions antagonize other nations in the region (many times through no fault of Israel, but there are times where it is their fault), and we get almost nothing in return as a result of this partnership.... Israel has the economic capacity the size of Wisconsin so we dont benefit from trade with them very much, and the only thing they really offer that other nation does is intel on Middle Eastern terrorists.

The issue with that though is that the US has had about the same success rate in the Middle East as the Cleveland Browns have in the NFL over the past 2 years. The last clear win we had was back with Carter when the Camp David Accords were signed, but even he had a massive number of fuckups in that department before something finally went our way, and ever since we've had bad decision after bad decision.

I honestly think we should just pull out of the Middle East entirely (in terms of military operations) and only intervene through diplomacy when one of the big three nations in the region (Israel, Iran, the Saudi's) is about to do something really goddamn stupid. The two biggest rallying cries that middle east extremists have against the US is keeping troops on their holy soil in Saudi Arabia, and the undying support we offer to Israel. There's no real reason we should continue to invest in either, at least not as much on the scale as we currently do, so why we havent distanced from Israel sooner is beyond belief to me. Maybe US politicians are too scared of being labeled as anti-Semitic.

I'm anti-immigration. Change my mind.
-->
@spacetime
The main issues I see with your arguments can be boiled down to 4 main points.

#1) You claim that immigration should be restricted to the bare minimum levels needed to fill labor shortages, but there is simply no way to accurately compute what that bare level is in a given month or year. Labor shortages are impacted by how many jobs are available, how many more jobs are created, how many Americans decide to go into retirement or stop looking for work, how many positions a company decides to open or close, and those are just things off the top of my head. Restricting the number of immigrants allowed into a country based on numbers that fluctuate or maybe cannot even be calculated simply isn't practical......

2) Your first argument is also built on the assumption that unemployed Americans looking for work should be able to fill open jobs before immigrants, but the geography of the country throws a giant wrench into that belief. 30,000 people in New York who are looking for work aren't going to move to Arizona to fill 30,000 farming jobs just because they're available. People who want to find work want to find it near them and most of the time will wait until something opens up close to them, rather then jump on whatever they can find anywhere in the country. The sheer size of the US makes it impossible so have it that every job that is open can be filled by every American who is looking for a job, so limiting immigration based on theoretical levels of labor demand will be thrown off from inaccuracy.

3) The second main argument you make against immigration is far weaker than your first one. You start off by focusing entirely on 'immigration without assimilation', and make a bunch of fairly opinionated claims about how it harms things like 'kinship' and 'national identity' which aren't things that can really be measured or evaluated in the first place. More importantly though is that even if the first generation of immigrants do not assimilate well with society and maintain most of their own languages and culture, later generations from that first generation do assimilate at a better rate, since they grow up learning the languages and customs from early ages rather then be thrusted into it in the second half of life.

4) You claim that immigrants must be selected carefully on the basis of cultural compatibility, but offer no explanation of what that basis is or how to calculate it. How do we calculate the cultural compatibility of someone? By having them speak English? By being Christian? By having them pass a high school level civics exam? By rooting for a particular sports team? We already have citizenship tests that all immigrants have to pass in order to become a naturalized citizen, does that not qualify as a means of testing a persons cultural compatibility? You do not specify.

Raped Dutch Politician Commits Suicide.

@ethang5
I went ahead and cut out all of the parts of your response where you continued to cry like a whiny little bitch, so that I could focus on your actual arguments about the subject at hand...... Unfortunately that eliminated close to 90% of everything you typed since you have a knack for devolving into unfocused rants whenever someone points out your blatant stupidity.

We want logic and facts, which you also seem to have very little of
I did post them. The issue is you do not have the ability to read or comprehend arguments.

Perhaps if I repost the massive wall of text that you blatantly ignored because you were so triggered for me calling you what you are then you may be able to actually respond to it. Here you go retard:

 -> "Willie Dillie, the politician you're referring to, was a noted Islamophobe who on August 6th left the city she was working in because of an unrelated investigation about her home. She accused a Muslim politician and the Mayor of starting the investigation, and then hiring a group of people to go after her and rape her, yet she offered no proof that anything she was saying was true and even refused to go into further detail when she was interviewed by a tv station the very next day..... Following her suicide the day after that, there was no evidence that could be found that anything she said was true, and there is no evidence she was even raped in the first place" <-

The first article that comes up about Willie Dillie that doesn't come from a blatantly biased right-wing hate site is a report that casts doubt that there were even threats made in the first place, let alone any actual rape https://www.ad.nl/den-haag/onduidelijkheid-over-verkrachting-haags-raadslid~ad877da7/
