Continued never ending deficit spending, especially on military build-up, is the single most important reason for decline of any great power. The costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were as of 2017 estimated to run as high as $4.4 trillion, which seems to be a major victory for Osama bin Laden, whose announced goal was to humiliate America by showcasing its casualty averseness and lack of will to persist in a long term conflict (the Chinese balloon as the latest example plus Afghani withdrawal).  As centrally mismanaged funds are diverted from critical national infrastructure to prop up failing political power structures, the nation continues the decline. (think recently of the 100 billion sent to Ukraine while 1 billion is spent to repair 1 bridge.)
