The same actually doesn't go for Mass. It's expensive near everywhere in Mass.
Nice theatrics by a community that knew they were on camera and that there was no real chance these arrivals would be staying for very long.
--> @ShilaHow bad is California’s housing shortage? A 2015 study by the state’s Legislative Analyst found that the state has been building about 110,000 fewer units than the amount needed to keep up with demand. And California has been doing this for more than 30 years! That adds up to a shortage of around 3.5 million housing units and counting. And that translates to higher prices. A 2,400 square foot home in San Francisco will cost around $1.4 million if you’re lucky. The same house in Phoenix, a metro area about the same size, might go for around $400,000. And don’t get us started on the gas prices, the highest in the nation.2022 Cost of Living Score: 3 out of 50 points (Top States Grade: F)Consumer Price Index (May, West Region): UP 8.3%Average Home Price (San Francisco): $1,396,782Half Gallon of Milk: $2.55Monthly Energy Bill: $266.44
Sure. That's certainly possible.But even if so, they did what they did in the context of almost nothing being at stake from welcoming the arrivals. They weren't going to stay long enough to cause major problems, they couldn't afford the property values there anyway, the kind of people who live at Martha's Vineyard would probably equate illegal immigrants with legal immigrants, and said immigrants would overwhelmingly vote for the same party as the locals if given the chance to vote (or their children down the road). There was little perceived threat.
Which is not to say that this community was in any sense immune to tribalism. Had a bunch of fundamentalist Christians, or non-supremacist white nationalists moved into Martha's Vineyard in numbers great enough to stage a takeover of local politics, it wouldn't have been tolerated by the locals.
Why? Because said groups are the clear outgroup from the perspective of the locals. It's not a test of tolerance when more of the ingroup moves in but more of the outgroup.

--> @ShilaA chatbot says what?
They could also sue Martha Vineyard residents for denying them shelter as a sanctuary city.
It's called false advertising.

--> @Greyparrot @SwagnarokRoughly a quarter of the people of Massachusetts are Republicans, I just presume that ratio applies to the people who helped out, are you contending that none of the good people that stepped up to help these people were Republicans?Sounds like you have a low opinion of Republicans.
I just hope those poor illegal invaders can be placed in one of the 8 sanctuary cities.
--> @GreyparrotI just hope those poor illegal invaders can be placed in one of the 8 sanctuary cities.I'm just glad the people of Florida are no longer living under the threat of those 50 people in San Antonio.

Hopefully Biden can increase the flow of illegal invaders to those 8 sanctuary cities so DeSantis won't subject them to unnecessary torture.Biden busses are far more compassionate.
