I would rather this site be like 2B2T. There should be absolutely no protections for new users. The best way for the new users to grow is to grow their own pair, not having the site do half the work. That is how I did.
Sure, if the main goal is just to attract people in and let them stay, sure, but beware that people, including possibly me, try less hard on unrated debates, even conceding as the easy way instead of using the big ol' brain to think a way out. Voters are less likely to vote on unrated ones because why do they matter?
The new rule on that the first 5 debates one created are unrated is lame and made the site less cool, honestly. It is basically taking out the competitive fun. What if some new mastermind defeats Whiteflame on his first try as the instigator? He gains nothing quantitatively?
New users learn from their past losses, that is how they grow a pair. If their past losses don't even matter even qualitatively on any measure, why keep participating in it? If I joined the site in 2023 instead of 2020 and I saw this rule, I just may give up debating the hobby.
Though, something I do support is putting a concession button that requires one to confirm it at least twice(like the confirmation on "Are you going to post your argument" or something), and the debate ends. There should probably be a mutually agreed tie option of the same class, except confirmation from both parties is needed for the debate to end with no change in rating. New debaters who instigate and then FF deserved everything the loss of points, because obviously they didn't win nor tie if the other guy worked on it.
And once again, bring back the search bar.
