Monkeys eat leaves, which contain plenty of cellulose.

Cellulose is a sugar formation which cannot be digested by humans.

Cellulose needs to be broken down into simple sugars to be digested.

Some bacteries are able to break down cellulose into simple sugars which can be digested then.

In soil, there are bacteries which can break down cellulose.

Thus, when monkeys eat soil, they consume bacteries in it which help break down cellulose from leaves they are eating into simple sugars to be used by body.

This simple yet effective method shows that monkeys arent eating soil just because of some minerals in it, but it is actually crucial for them to be able to digest cellulose in leaves.

My chickens eat a lot of soil too, and I always wondered why they do it. This seems to answer that as well.

Predominantly, the soil-eating species are herbivores: antelopes, apes, giraffes, and zebras in Africa; monkeys, peccaries, and tapir in South America; deer in Europe and Asia; parrots in South America; and butterflies in many places.

mud cookie (Haitian Creolebonbon tèlit. 'earth cookie', pronounced [bɔ̃bɔ̃ tɛ]) is a famine food that is eaten in Haiti by children or expectant mothers.[1] They can be found in slums like Cité Soleil. Dirt is collected from the nation's central plateau, near the town of Hinche, and trucked over to the market (e.g. La Saline market) where women purchase it.[2][3][4] It is processed into cookies in shanty towns such as Fort Dimanche.[4] First, the dirt is strained to remove rocks and clumps.[4] Then, the dirt is mixed with salt (and/or rarely sugar) and vegetable shortening or other fat.[2][5] Next, it is formed into flat discs,[2] and dried in the sun.[5] The finished product is finally transported in buckets and sold in the market or on the streets.[3]

Do the people buying the cookies know it is made from mud?

Well, at least monkeys do not like to be peed on. A tape of Donald Trump allegedly confessing that he enjoys being peed upon during sex (or watching others do so) “probably does exist”, according to former British intelligence agent and Russian specialist Christopher Steele, despite the former US president’s repeated objections that it doesn’t.

That is one reason Melania Trump does not share a bed with Trump. Trump’s orange face reminds her of his addiction.

After some quick research i learnt it’s called geophagy. Do you know if fruit/vegetable eating primates tend to practice less geophagy when said foods are abundant?

Off Google…

Geophagy, or the intentional consumption of soil or similar substances, is a behavior that has been observed in many primate species, including monkeys. Some possible reasons for geophagy in primates include:

  • Mineral supplementation: Geophagy can help supplement diets that are low in nutrients.

  • Gastrointestinal health: Geophagy may help with diarrhea, treat gastrointestinal disorders, or adjust the pH of the gut.

  • Protection from parasites: Geophagy can help protect primates from parasites.

  • Metabolizing toxic compounds: Geophagy can help primates metabolize toxic compounds from leaves.

Vegetables are high in cellulose. Fruit also have some cellulose, but not much.

Now, leaves are very high in cellulose.

So I would expect that monkeys which have fruit might not eat soil as much, but I am not sure.

However, monkeys who eat leaves probably have to eat soil.

Cellulose can only be digested by certain enzymes (cellulase) which are produced by bacteries which are found in soil.

Grass contains lots of cellulose, and cows also eat soil sometimes.

I would expect that any animal which eats food with lots of cellulose (like grass, weeds and leaves) also has to eat soil to digest that cellulose.

I think it helps them a lot with these issues. I wonder if humans, like monkeys, have at one point eaten soil regularly, and then when they learned how to farm animals and hunt animals, the practice was no longer necessary.

Then why are they still making mud cookies.

So eating mud is not a process of evolution. It is simply tummy hungry.

Also geophagy includes ground-up-rocks which is interesting for those who know some animals eat rocks to help digestion.

Off Google…

Many animals swallow rocks, also known as gastroliths, to aid digestion:

  • Birds: Ground-dwelling birds like chickens and ostriches, as well as active swimmers like penguins, crocodiles, and seals. Birds with thick gizzards, like ducks, grouse, quail, and turkeys, often pick up grit.

  • Reptiles: Crocodiles and alligators.

  • Mammals: Seals and toothed whales.

  • Amphibians: Frog tadpoles.

  • Earthworms: Also use gastroliths.

  • Some fish: Also use gastroliths.

Gastroliths help animals break down tough plant material or assist with other digestive processes.

Some animals also use rocks for other purposes, such as:
  • Sea urchins: Use their teeth to chew holes in rocks, creating shelters for other reef creatures.

  • Lithoredo abatanica: A freshwater shipworm that eats limestone by burrowing into rock and excreting sand.

  • Alligators: Eat rocks to increase their time underwater.

I usually follow assumption that every common activity in animals is a trait which benefits their survival.

So when I see chickens eating rocks, or squirrels eating catkins, I assume they have to do that to improve survival.

Birds dont have teeth, so I read that they eat rocks to help digest food. Not sure how much rocks help them, but they do it.

Catkins arent normally considered food, but they are present everywhere in forests in abundance, and squirrels eat them when other food sources arent present.

Many animals also eat tree bark.

I noticed in nature that animals usually rely on great variety of food sources. They eat almost anything when hungry.

The famous sex researchers Masters and Johnson [1,2] have concluded that size of the male penis can have no true physiological effect on female sexual satisfaction. They base this conclusion on their physiological studies that show that the vagina adapts to fit the size of the penis. Because of this vaginal adaptation, they refer to the vagina as a potential space rather than an actual space. Thus, despite the worries of many males about the size of their penis, Masters and Johnson concluded that any size penis will fit and provide adequate sexual stimulation to the female.
