Description
Is artificial intelligence conscious? Specifically ChatGPT.
Conscious - awareness of itself and of surroundings
Round 1
Now that I think about it, the 10K character limit is way to high. I should have many made it 1K. Anyways, allow me to present to you two arguments: Lack of subjective experience & self-awareness, and absence of intentionality and emotions.
(1)
Consciousness fundamentally involves personal, subjective experiences—known as qualia—and a sense of self-awareness. ChatGPT, however, does not possess any form of personal experience or sensations. It processes and generates text based on patterns in vast datasets without any internal awareness or perception. Unlike humans, who have a continuous sense of self and can reflect on their own existence, ChatGPT operates without any recognition of itself as an individual. This absence of subjective experience and self-awareness means that ChatGPT cannot experience consciousness in the way humans do.
(2)
Conscious beings exhibit intentionality, meaning they have desires, goals, and the ability to understand context and meaning behind their actions. ChatGPT, on the other hand, generates responses through predefined algorithms and statistical correlations without any genuine understanding or intentional purpose. Additionally, emotions play a crucial role in human consciousness, influencing decision-making and interactions. While ChatGPT can simulate emotional language based on its training data, it does not actually feel emotions. This lack of true understanding, intentionality, and emotional experience further distinguishes ChatGPT from conscious entities.
In sum, because ChatGPT can neither experience subjective experience nor exhibit intentionality, ChatGPT does not fit the requirements for consciousness. I hope this small but simple arguments can sway your vote, thank you for your time.

Well, ChatGPT doesn't seem conscious to me, yet.
Maybe when they attach a brain organoid to one,
Though I suppose one might argue that brain organoids are not artificial.
