Description

The United States Economy is bolstered by immigrants from other countries

Round 1
Pro
#1

Not to put words in my opponents mouth, but the main argument I hear from people arguing the other side of this issue is that immigrants are stealing jobs from american citizens. Sadly for my opponent, this is just plain not true.

In fact, not only do immigrants not steal jobs, they create them too. Self employed entrepreneurs need to hire people for their businesses and that creates jobs. Additionally, migrants help fill gaps in the labor market. There is a labor shortage, and common sense says that if there isn't enough of something, you get more. More workers means more goods are produced, and because demand is currently high, this boosts our economy.

Finally, the evidence suggests that having more workers gives natives a chance to move up, get a college education, and get higher skilled jobs. In fact, I will go on to say that "shutting down the border" and turning away immigrants is potentially dangerous for our economy, and should be avoided at all costs. All personal opinions and xenophobia aside, a majority of economists agree that what the United States economy needs right now is a larger workforce, and I say we should trust the experts on this one. I could go on, but I would prefer to keep this opening statement short. I turn the floor over to my opponent.
