Description

Fourth of July is my personal favorite holiday of the year. It is a time that we both remember the sacrifices of those who protected our freedom as well as celebrate the fact that we live in a country of unprecedented levels of rights in terms of free speech, bearing arms, etc. To keep this interesting, we will be supplying the most patriotic songs, but not all will be American.
Rounds will go as follows:

We will list the name of the song, write up to 100 words describing the message and historical significance of the song, and then providing a YouTube link to the song. This will be judged by how catchy the song is, how significant the song is in the country's history, and how well we conveyed the message of the song.

God Bless the USA

A classic patriotic song released at the end of the Cold War to raise hopes. It expressed a renewed sense of patriotism and connection among Americans. It reminds us of what we have to be thankful for:this is a land where "at least I know I'm free" and that we must never forget "the men who died who gave that right to me". Lee Greenwood states that we must stand up together if we are to defend this freedom: a timeless message that we must never forget.

There is no way that I can resist a music battle! I would like to start with "Battle Hymn of the Republic" performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir!

This is honestly my favorite American patriotic song! There's so much to like in this song and performance. First, I love the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. They are definitely one of the best professional choirs in existence today. Second, the song conveys an interesting tempo that feels like that the singers are marching.

Men Behind the Wire

This song relates to The Troubles, Ireland's most recent fight for independence. It is sung from the perspective of fathers as they watched British soldiers break into their homes and stood helpless as their sons were taken away to internment camps. The song says "If being Irish means we're guilty..." This refers to faulty British intelligence, which led to the imprisonment of thousands of Irish without evidence or even criminal charges.

For this round, I have chosen the Israeli song Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (Jerusalem of Gold). This is often dubbed the unofficial national anthem of Israel. It's a gorgeous piece performed and I love this arrangement.

Ballad of the Green Berets

This song glorifies the pride of our nation: the military. The Green Berets since the 1960s have been one of the most elite members of our army and have been invaluable in ending conflicts. This song provides information on their training, the dangerous situations they endure for our freedom, and the pride that each of these men possess for the honor of becoming a Green Beret. Truly a beautiful tribute to these upstanding heroes.

Rhodesians Never Die

Problems with the Rhodesian government aside, this is one of the most patriotic songs from another country. When this song was written, their country was sanctioned and they were fighting rebels backed by Russia and China. They knew they had little chance of victory. They pledged to fight the communistic invaders who wished to destroy their beautiful country and way of life and they chose to "go alone with pride" to maintain independence.

Marching Through Georgia

This is my favorite patriotic song of all time. It sings of the successes of General Tecumseh in the bloodiest war we have endured- the Civil War. Tecumseh and his men marched through the south into Georgia, burning fields, other strategic resources, and ultimately, Atlanta. This song describes the overwhelming emotion and pride these men felt once returning home and seeing their flag, which almost brought them to tears.
