I am afraid mentioning via @ doesn't work, it has no effect. Just tell me in a few words how it works? Like the emails, where you have topics and the messages get automatically grouped?

You don't need friend requests to send messages.
AND
PMs are made by threads, not by user-user combination. That way, you could start separate threads with the same two users.
This system also would probably make group PMs easier to code.
