Recently I have seen I have seen various sites claiming the NFL is not a sport but entertainment. What say your google searches and why should anyone believe your google search's? I find more sites say it is entertainment and less saying it is a sport. Then a few saying it is both with disclaimers.

My google search on definition of sport:

"a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other"

So my understanding is that if same rules apply to everyone, it is a sport.

But sport is usually followed by entertainment.

Often, the only reason for doing sport is entertainment.

So yeah, its a tricky one and in this case google is not your friend or helpful at all.

"a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other" Professional wrestling matches all the criteria of the definition but is not a sport, it is entertainment.

It is a sport if people are tired fighting for something. It is entertainment if people enjoy watching it.

NFL is both.

Or it is neither, because Football is a sport and NFL is an organization/entity.

How about an entertaining sport.

Not that I find it entertaining watching other people play sports.

But millions do, and millions will pay to do so.

More fool them I say.

The NFL may be a "sport" on paper, but it exists for the sole purpose of providing entertainment, and it rakes in billions doing so

So? Boys begin training since high school or even middle school so they could become football players like in their dreams. It is a sport on paper, and it is treated as one in actuality. Removing the entertainment value and Football does not become less of a sport unless you tamper the rules so it is unplayable.

What if you can predetermine the winner like in professional wrestling.

That does not negate it from being a sport. People are tired fighting for the win and they find the fun in it.

In Olympics, the eventual gold medalist usually is matched up with someone they can defeat with almost 100% certainty. That does not negate anything from being a sport.

Legally it actually does negate it from being a sport.

You might as well deny 100m sprint from being a sport from 2008 to 2018 because Bolt won almost every race he competed in.
