Judges 21 American Standard Version (ASV)
21 Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife. 2 And the people came to Beth-el, and sat there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore. 3 And they said, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to-day one tribe lacking in Israel? 4 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. 5 And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up in the assembly unto Jehovah? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up unto Jehovah to Mizpah, saying, He shall surely be put to death. 6 And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day. 7 How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by Jehovah that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?
8 And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up unto Jehovah to Mizpah? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly. 9 For when the people were numbered, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there. 10 And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones. 11 And this is the thing that ye shall do: ye shall [a]utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man. 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
13 And the whole congregation sent and spake to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace unto them. 14 And Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not. 15 And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that Jehovah had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin? 17 And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not blotted out from Israel. 18 Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters, for the children of Israel had sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin. 19 And they said, Behold, there is [b]a feast of Jehovah from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah. 20 And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards, 21 and see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22 And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come to [c]complain unto us, that we will say unto them, Grant them [d]graciously unto us, because we took not for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did ye give them unto them, else would ye now be guilty. 23 And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they carried off: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and built the cities, and dwelt in them. 24 And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.

When you read young virgins understand prepubescent children and then sing praise to your god and look at your own daughters and weep, if you are a human.

I think (I always have to say that!) this story is probably historically accurate.  It tells how a Benjamite rapes a Levite woman, resulting in a civil war amonsgt the Hebrew and the near annihilation of the Benjamites.  The other Hebrew tribes are unwilling to allow a fellow tribe to disappear so they kill the males of the non-Hebrew Machir tribe and give the Machir females to the few remaining Benjamite warriors.

None of that is described as being commanded by YHWH - it was all decided by the 'congregation', presumably some sort of council of elders.

Well where you are concerned Keith, first it has to be established whether or not you actually believe this biblical story, (exaggerated or not) before anyone takes the time to respond to what it is that you "think"  about this biblical story, keeping in mind that you dismiss these scriptures regularly.

For those not convinced that “legitimate rape” had a niche in biblical law, consider Deuteronomy 21:11 OR Numbers 31:18 OR Deuteronomy 22: 23-24

state, after the Israelites slaughtered the adult Midianite males, Moses ordered the soldiers to take all the young girls “who have not known a man by lying with him and keep alive for yourselves”;and makes clear that if a (betrothed) virgin is raped in a city and doesn’t cry for help, she should be stoned to death along with the perpetrator.

Deuteronomy 22:28-29 states: “If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.”

And no god around it seems to tell moses to stop this vile practice.

It is just as well that Israelis do not practice these vile actions today as do many Muslims who follow the Quran to the letter.

The point is that it's not a story about god or god commanding people to do anything so the thread title 'God of Rape' is misleading.   In reality tribal conflicts and 'wife stealing' has happened 'forever' and still goes on today.

Maybe he should have titled it:

"God Doesn't Condemn Rape -    Although His  Book His is  Riddled With The Vile Practice of Rape , And The Taking Of Virgins For Sex Slaves".

Bit of a long winded title, that,  methinks

OOH NO KEITH. It is the word of god, not my claim that is the godist claim. They will of course deny that it's the word of god because that's what they need to tell themselves in order that they convince themselves that their god doesn't condone rape. A stupid belief.

Had the writers of the Bible put that God commanded rape to end they would look pretty stupid - or their god weak -  as rape most certainly went on.

It can be assumed that killing the men and carrying off the women of vanquished enemies was not considered 'vile' in those days but normal practice in war.    Our image of god is coloured by the fatalistic pacifism of Cristianity - the Christian god is 'nice'.   The hebrew did not consider 'niceness' to be an essential attribute of a god!  YHWH was not nice - but he was powerful, so you wanted that power used against your enemies, not against yourself.

YHWH failed against the babylonians, the greeks and the romans.   The notion that their god was all-powerful was hard to maintain, so YhWH was re-invented by Christianity as a 'nice god'.

I merely request you make your own position clear!   in my experience some theists have a real problem accepting that some people simply don't believe god exists.   Such theists are convinced atheists hate god, with the implication we 'really' believe in god.

Your threads are getting better, about time you put some effort into them instead of merely wasting space bulprof. Unfortunately your brain is too old to take in new information, so no matter what side you take on an issue, you will permanently be there no matter what new information you encounter.

The Orthodox Church does not condone rape. This is the church opinion that matters. But does any church condone rape? No, of course not. Rape is not acceptable behavior for a Christian.

You can use the bible to paint whatever kind of message you want. Even the church acknowledges this, and the church is the rightful interpreter of scripture, not you.

What does the church say? Rape is bad, mmkay?

Thanks Keith. Though "misleading" is a little....... misleading. Hmm?

In those days, it was immoral for a woman to live with a man she was not married to, so why would anyone assume the women were to be sex slaves?

If a woman was to yell if she was being raped, then the rape would be stopped if she yelled. Why would anyone assume the women were to be sex slaves?

If these women were to be betrothed, then they were to be married, not used as sex slaves. Why would anyone assume the women were to be sex slaves?

The phrase, "take for yourselves" means, take as wives for yourselves. Sex outside of marriage was considered a sin. Why would anyone assume the women were to be sex slaves?

Why? Because to the froward, all things are bad. To the impure, all things are impure. Out of a sick mind comes sick thoughts.

But what you need to understand is that in those days if thang was killed by the jews his wife and three daughters would have the good fortune of being raped into assimilation, isn't that right thang.

Because that was their fate.

In fantasy god world rapists stop when the woman yells, WOW......Because that was their fate.
If these women were to be betrothed, then they were to be married, not used as sex slaves. Why would anyone assume the women were to be sex slaves?

Because that was their fate.

Sex outside of marriage was quite acceptable with sex slaves...........Because that was their fate.
Why? Because to the froward, all things are bad. To the impure, all things are impure. Out of a sick mind comes sick thoughts.
It's not just there thoughts that were impure, their culture of rape was even worse. But your god was more than happy with the rape culture, that's why he's known as the god of rape.
You should read that disgusting book one day.

May one suspect that the "brides" had very little choice in the matter?
That would be true. But in the particular case where the woman's city state had been defeated and destroyed, the alternative for the woman was being left in the wild with no protection. That was most likely a certain death. It is more the times forcing the women's hand than the men.

There were no police. The countryside swarmed with bandits, outlaws, robbers and slavers. People were drawn to city states because they afforded a measure of protection. Hardly anyone travelled alone, and theft and murder went unpunished.

That is how people were, yet atheists will blame God. But of the two choices, the women would certainly have chosen to go with the men. Women could not earn a living alone. Single women outside the household of a man was begging for trouble unless she was very old.

The Hebrew men were not thinking rape, they were thinking marriage. Their society was not set up where they could take a woman and sleep with her in an affair. And the risk upon discovery was death.

The captured women were taken in by the female elders of the tribe. They were assigned duties and thought the religion, as any man who was interested, showed his interest. The woman was free to refuse any man, but in those days, that was not a thing done lightly, as a wrong decision could mean spinsterhood and death.

In those times, marriage was very, very important. A westerner of today cannot imagine how important it was to a woman. She had no hope of a career, or schooling. Her only chance in life was to somehow snag a man and have children. And as virtually everyone was poor, and people could not marry outside of class, a "rich" man was not a realistic expectation. Men were so certain that a woman would say yes, they sometimes simply asked her father, not even telling the woman.

Though unfair to women, these were the times. It was rough and tumble, and a very hard living. People who blame God for people's behavior, or who speak out of ignorance of these times, are mostly just looking for a way to blame God.

It certainly sounds like gussie is blaming God, which is something an atheist cannot do!   Hence my request to clarify his position.

Back on the fence then. One minute you are explaining and interpreting "god's holy word"  from his Holy Book and then you tell us that atheists cannot blame God for anything because they are atheist.

Ok keeping in mind that you are a confessed atheist try these on.

Who is said to have sent his only son to Earth, Keith?

Who made promises to Abraham Keith?

Who told Moses to return to Egypt and free his people, Keith?

His name is Gussie?

The principle must be logical, regardless of whether one believes God exists or not. If I drink and drive and kill a Child in a stupid accident, I fail to see how God can be correctly blamed for my willful actions. So IF God exists, it is silly to blame Him for the death of the child. I hold the blame.

Blaming God for the willful actions of a moral free agent become doubly stupid if the one blaming God does not believe God exists. He is blaming an imaginary being for something it didn't do!

Gussie. Lol
