Put a mountain of cheese and nothing else on a crust and bake it.
Put nothing but sauce on a pizza crust and bake it.

So it doesn't have to be any of these things and can still be called a pizza. It doesn't seem like there's any minimum requirements.

A while back I heard it’s not really considered fast food. It’s more like food you would sit down at a restaurant and order.
But I think that might have been Japan and the culture around it may have changed since then.

I think to be basic pizza there needs to be the crust, a sauce of some kind though I feel classic tomato should really be the only one that counts. Then cheese. While pepperoni is a staple topping I don't believe you have to have pepperoni on a pizza for it to be pizza.

Ok, there must be a sauce.
Therefore, technically cottage cheese or just cheese or any kind could be smothered on the pizza and call it a sauce as long as it can be spread.
Which basically means that putting cheese and nothing else on a pizza crust counts.
Try to prove to me that cheese is not a sauce. I mean, I have eaten white cheese pizzas in NYC for years and enjoyed it. How is that a selling produce clearly marketed as a pizza is actually not a pizza?

Pizzas can be had without cheese (i.e. tomato pies, vegan pizzas)
Pizzas can be had without sauce (i.e. white pies).
Therefore, neither cheese nor sauce are a hard requirement.

A basic Italian Pizza is dough crust, tomato sauce, mozzarella type cheese and basil.
But have what ever you fancy.
Though just crust would be a bit bland and dry.
