A murderer at large is alive but not good.
A criminal that has gone through the death penalty action and thus died is neither alive nor good.

It could well mean that Jesus considered anyone alive without him and his teachings in their lives were "dead". And only through his teachings would he resurrect them from (living) dead into the land of the living.
Simply put: join me, believe in me and come back to life.
I think in those ancient times anyone not religious or had turned their backs on religion /god were simply considered to be dead. The idiom of the times so to speak.
