As per other discussion re statues.

A flag is generally a patterned piece of rectangular fabric.

It only means something if you want it to mean something.

BLM wave flags....Is that racist?....Or currently socially acceptable.

I expect that the Confederate flag was once socially acceptable.

The flag is not racist. The people who use them, on the other hand...

Are you referring to a national flag of the Confederate States of America, or the general image that's patterned off the battle flag for the Army of Northern Virginia?

it's a fact that the civil war was primarily fought to protect slavery in the south. so it's a racist flag, though the folks who use it nowadays are often too ignorant to know better

Flags aren't racist, people are.

Conway is right that the flag we generally call the Confederate Flag was never flown by the Confederacy but most closely resembles the square battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, the design of which was generally referred to as the "Southern Cross."

The Southern Cross is first and foremost the flag of America's most lethal enemy and as such profoundly anti-American.  Flying the Southern Cross is primarily a big "fuck you" to all soldiers who serve, fight, and die for our nation.  But yes, to the extent that enemy fought for the preservation of black slavery and the tyranny of White Supremacy the Southern Cross is a statement of hatred for blacks and an explicit threat of subjugation against all nonwhite people everywhere.

As it was a symbol used by those who fought war for the sake of owning slaves, that thought widespread death was worth the institution of slavery - yes - yes I'd say the symbol is racist. Similar to how the Swastika is anti-semitic by nature of it's use.

Yes a flag is a piece of fabric with different colors and symbols, but as humans we assign meanings to those symbols, meanings that do truly carry values and principles. The confederate flag is a symbol of choice- of choosing a dehumanizing, oppressive, wretched institution over saving millions of lives.

In other words, yes.
