With the Olympics qualifiers on tv, it got me thinking what is the best country in the world today,  and what is that based on?

For me, it's America, I was born their, we have a powerful military, great influence across the world.
For the 'most part, we have decent standards of living, decent laws, decent morals, decent rights.
A history and culture, I appreciate.

Looking at it more objectively, I don't know.

The Quality of Life Index presented here is based on eight indices:
  • Purchasing Power
  • Safety

Based on these indices, the ten countries with the highest quality of life are:
  1. Denmark (192.53)
  2. Switzerland (190.92)
  3. Finland (186.40)
  4. Australia (185.03)
  5. Netherlands (184.18)
  6. Austria (181.68)

Greatest is pretty subjective but I don't think there's much question that the oldest and most influential democracy in the world , the most profound example of liberty and equality succeeding in the most heterogeneous culture in history, the inventor and master of the modern global economy, the most powerful military in human history has to be recognized as "greatest."  The world learns to speak English because Americans speak English.  The world trades in dollars because Americans back the dollar.  The world spends its days looking at itself on screens- TV, PC, phones invented by Americans and on which American culture increasingly defines world culture.   The world dreams of democracy because Americans made democracy work.  The world hopes for peace and prosperity so long as America persists.

USA. USA. USA.

I think that the Greeks invented Democracy a few thousand years before.

And just about every other claim you made is inaccurate.

So you're biased.

So you should be.

I don't know. Subjectively, China, the land that I grew up in.

The academic test(which by the way, ended 2 days ago) has a social studies test which requires me to memorize the history of China from the 1700s to now, as well as the advantages of the Chinese system, plus a lot of national indoctrination. Even though I have no need to hold on to those beliefs anymore, I am probably too brainwashed to take this topic seriously.

Any country that values freedom of speech. I don't care if it is contaminated with narratives that are monopolized by the elites (i.e. major news outlet), all I care is that it allows dissidents to express their own ideas. Ideally, I would not want to  live in religious dustbins across the third world and I would not want to live in countries that regularly restrict freedom of speech.  I'm speaking from experience.

I truly believe the Irish to be the ubermensch. If god was a man, he'd be Irish.

The Irish word for Frenchman is "Francach." The Irish word for rat is "francach."

I don't know what's going on there tbh but I'm not mad at it.

"Black man" is also "fear gorm," which means "blue man." "Fear dubh" means the devil in Ireland.

If I were Irish I would almost certainly be a native English speaker, but I would speak first to all strangers in Irish and if they were not able to answer me I would give a sad, slow shake of my head and then switch to intentionally broken English

My mam's side of the family is from one of the Gaeltacht regions and all my aunties are Irish teachers. I'm fluent in comprehension, but I've to think too long to speak it and all my tenses and whatever else are a muddle even so. It's a romantic idea for me tbh, one day I'll sit down and learn my tongue, I'd love to read Mairtin O Cadhain's Cre na Cille too, the plot of it is a grave plot, quite literally haha. Said to be Ireland's true greatest work of literature. But history's a funny thing, eh?

Are there still old people who have better Irish than English or is it entirely a secondary language at this point?

Not old people. My grandparents on my dad's side didn't speak a word of Irish. There's lot of regions and towns though where Irish is still a first language.

We got gaeilgeoiri rappers and all:

Those two lads are actually legends, concerts full of people chanting "Brits out." Then they're snubbed by pretty much all mainstream media for it, a damn shame tbh.

I'm curious. Do you think the US is a stagnant empire? It certainly is powerful but I don't see an upward trend in its power.

Good observation.

Whereas there is clearly and upward trend in other regions......Economically, technologically and militarily.
