especially you liberals of the forum, do you acknowledge that some folks hate trump so much that they become irrational?

trump derangement syndrome or TDS is where someone hates trump so much that they become irrational in how they perceive him.

humans are emotional creatures. It is entirely possible for our emotions to override our reason. So from that limited perspective, yes it is a thing. An example of it is all the people who honestly believed that trump was agent of the russian government as some sort of Manchurian candidate. There was evidence trump was corrupt, that he had ties to the russians and that he had lied about it. But it is a really big leap from there to manchurian candidate.

But it is just as much, if not much more, of an issue on the republican side. They are so emotionally invested in trump as some sort of savior that they simply wave away anything he says or does. Literally nothing matters to them as long as trump says it. That is much more dangerous in my opinion. We are seeing it right now. There is absolutely no evidence of fraud. Countless lawsuits and investigations have been done and no one can provide any evidence. But the TDS republicans simply choose to believe it because they want to. They need to believe that trump won. They can't emotionally handle the fact that he lost, so they simply reject reality.

It would be silly to deny the existence of a facet of human mentality. However the term itself is excessively thrown about as a meaningless catch all rebuttal to trump criticism such that it itself means very little when used.

It's a very similar condition to BDS.

trump derangement syndrome or TDS is where someone hates trump so much that they become irrational in how they perceive him.
The term "derangement syndrome" was first coined by Charles Krauthammer in defense of Bush during the run up to the the Iraq War.  Krauthammer later admitted he would not have supported the war if he'd known that Bush's WMD claims were manufactured lies.  So we note that from its original incarnation,  the side derided as "deranged" turned out to be on the correct side of history according to the man calling those folks deranged back in 2003.

Let's also remember that Krauthammer, who died in 2018, lived long enough to side with the deranged when his phrase came to be applied to Trump.

  • "a moral disgrace"
  • "Trump offered a dazzling array of other reasons for disqualification: habitual mendacity, pathological narcissism, profound ignorance and an astonishing dearth of basic human empathy."
  • "Bungled collusion is still collusion"
  • "Trump was elected to do politically incorrect — and needed — things ... He was not elected to do crazy things, starting with his tweets... If he cannot distinguish between the two, Trump Derangement Syndrome will only become epidemic."
That is, even the guy who came up with the idea of TDS now faults the president for our  present national derangement.

Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions? In what ways are those similar?

Okay, so this kind annoys me, this isn't a thing, and I don't mean that people don't do this. I mean that this is applicable to anyone someone doesn't like. This isn't unique to Trump, and trying to make it seem like its a widespread thing that liberals have against Trump, which is the implication here, is misinforming people. People do this at Biden a lot, people did this at Hilary, people do this at anyone that they dislike, and lots of people do it against people who are disliked by lots.

yeah, that is pretty much what I was trying to get at. Emotions overriding logic is something that happens to most people. It is certainly not specific to trump. So coining a term to try to paint any criticism of trump as "derangement" is just a cheap political ploy.

Mmmhm, and the fact that a lot of people who aren't even trying to do that, shows how effective it is at tricking people.
