We've got at least 4 now. For now do you want to plan on mock PF? Or maybe LD with 2 person teams?

since David is making the tourney LD, we should probably follow the same format.

I believe this is all of who expressed an interest.

We're going to go with a mock LD format debate between 2 teams of 2. Since we have 5 we'll just have to have a second round after the first, and whoever sits out will "judge" the 1st round & give feedback.

What sort of topic would you guys like to see? Traditional LD, or less philosophical topics (just debated in the LD format)?

Here's a few potential ones, but you all are welcome to posit your own:

  • Resolved: Violent revolution is a just response to political oppression (if you guys can't tell already... I like this topic)
  • Resolved: In a democracy, voting ought to be compulsory.
  • Resolved: Developing countries should prioritize environmental protection over resource extraction when the two are in conflict.
  • Resolved: The United States should increase its use of nuclear energy for commercial energy production.
  • Resolved: The United States federal government should prioritize reducing the federal debt over promoting economic growth.
  • Resolved: The United States should end its economic sanctions against Venezuela.
  • Resolved: The European Union should join the Belt and Road Initiative.
  • Resolved: The United Nations should grant India permanent membership on the Security Council.
  • Resolved: The United States federal government should impose price controls on the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Resolved: The United States ought to replace the Electoral College with a direct national popular vote.
  • Resolved: The United States should replace means-tested welfare programs with a universal basic income.
  • Resolved: The US ought to increase domestic climate change regulations.

I'm personally a fan of more policy-based topics, though I'm open to other options. I'll think about adding to the list, but for now, I like most of these (the portion I like is listed below). Not sure how we're arranging who gets to be on what team, but probably best to randomize it between debates so that we get experience debating with different people as often as possible. Also, I'll volunteer to sit out the first debate unless someone is really nervous/uncomfortable and wants to take a backseat for the first one.

This was going to be the method. I also wanted to randomize whether the person was 1st or 2nd speaker.

As for the topics you chose, we'll let other people give input and see whether there is a topic that everyone likes.

If I had to pick a top 3 (just in case everyone's rather spread out on this):

Resolved: Developing countries should prioritize environmental protection over resource extraction when the two are in conflict
Resolved: The European Union should join the Belt and Road Initiative.
Resolved: The United States federal government should impose price controls on the pharmaceutical industry.

Honorable mention to the India on the Security Council topic. That one would be interesting, though I think these three have more meat to them.

seeing your prowess to VR, I don't want to debate that. The rest seems fine. What do you guys feel about potentially using my "I can I BB" topics (https://www.debateart.com/forum/topics/4690-i-can-i-bb-debate-topics) that depend purely on logic and less on research? (However, I can I BB follows a 3 min opening, 1 min cross examination and 1 minute conclusion for each side)

Does that mean you're not available over winter break? I can't tell. You'd only need to be available for a couple of debates if you wanted to participate, and those don't have to be consecutive.

Could do that. Not one of my personal favorites, but it's a solid debate, and we can have it be one of the rounds.

If this goes over well, I recommend we try out some other styles. Policy might be a bit much, but PF and Parli are both viable options.

OK. Judging by the input everyone has given, I think the topic "Resolved: The European Union should join the Belt and Road Initiative." would be best.

It allows a broad array of argumentation from moral, to economic & political, environmental, etc.

Really, in terms of versatility, this topic is hands down the best of the bunch.

Now, we decide the how & when. Once we have decided this I will assign sides and partner people up at random. Again: it will be at least 2 rounds. One with Whiteflame on the bench (since he volunteered), the other with him included. We can do more rounds if people find it enjoyable. Heck, if it picks up, we could make it a regular thing on the site.

I was thinking maybe the 23rd, using Zoom, Google Meets, or David's suggestion of Streamyard.

Thoughts?

Sure. Sounds good. Maybe we can arrange various meeting times we are willing to do on 23rd. I'm usually available all day (9AM to 10 PM)

Been there. First open tournament I ever did, we ran into one of the top rated teams in the country in the second round. It was a topic I knew extremely well, probably better than they did, but they cleaned our clocks.
