We definitely need this.
Have there been spam bots here? I haven't noticed any, but it started small on DDO.

The accounts should be banned by the IP address and the country of origin should be determined.

Uh-oh. One's in Chicago, Illinois, USA and the other is from Delaware, USA.
Given how many USA users are on the site, we can't just ban all USA accounts/prevent USA from making accounts.
I think it is the most exact to manually disable accounts to prevent accidental bans for actually constructive accounts that are not bots.

How about only for creating accounts rather than every login? It would be truly painful to do a reCaptcha for every login.
DDO has reCaptcha but it does not weed out much spam as far as I can tell.
Limit the amount of posts you can make as a new user. If you reach a certain number of "quality" (one forfeit only) debates, you get promoted from new user and get to make as many forum posts as you want. Also limit the amount of debates you can make as a new user.
In other words, make a new user status and until a user proves themselves worthy of being a real user, they remain that way and cannot post as much.

This also prevents alt accounts since they can't do anything about it anyways.
DDO spammers arent discouraged

The MO for debate site spam boys is to just make one post per account anyway so this would just needlessly hinder legitimate newcomers.

How about email verification requirements and a reCAPTCHA?
How about email verification requirements and a reCAPTCHA?
Perhaps. I don't know how effective email verification is elsewhere but it certainly seems to be standard these days.

I don't think these are necessarily bots, they are humans testing out things to later make bots. They are each only making 1 thing each.
