f'real though, doesn't that argument best explain the extremes that God displays throughout the bible? wrath. vengeance, love, mercy, "jealous God", "wailing and gnashing of teeth", "eternal torment" etc

here is a satire piece on the subject, but it does the best job actually making the argument, that God indeed has bipolar disorder

You could also say he has what psychologists call a complex.

“A complex is a core pattern of emotions, memories, perceptions, and wishes in the personal unconscious organized around a common theme, such as power or status“

His subconscious being Bronze Age peasants.

No it does not. The best explanation in keeping with our epistemological limitations and understanding of reality is that the Yahweh, like most (if not all gods), was created as a post hoc rationalization of the reality that we perceive on the part of the authors of the bible and that because those authors had different goals and axioms the behavior of the figure which is being used as their post hoc rationalization is naturally somewhat erratic to facilitate the needs of the diverse views of these authors.

I thoroughly enjoyed this link.  I also learned more about the Gnostics.   Although I tend to agree with secularmerlin's  post about the authors of the Bible, I still think the bi-polar God idea fits too   ---   and is hilarious!  I like to think that God evolved over time.  God being stern and filled with Rage in the OT and then loving and forgiving in the NT.   He has been learning and growing as a "god".  He is still learning though, so don't expect a stable God anytime soon.

True.

So in simpler terms, theism and associated deities are made up and modified to suit  the demands of ignorance.

I am prepared to accept this until any infinite the contrary can be presented.

Well I am here to rant, but because it probably already exists so creating a new forum thread is unneeded.

So there is God, who forbids birth control measures who are SOLELY INVENTED BY HUMANS FOR HUMANS AND INTEND NO NET HARM, because:
  • It brings more equality to women
  • It brings less value to marriage
  • It gives humans more control over life and their body
  • It doesn't produce surpluses of population

If god is ruling like anything, it is basically like Authoritarian national socialism or "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics". If you just interpret the scripture just a little extremely, and you get tyranny. Yeah, "love us, love us", if you don't obey him your net value will make you go to hell. Mass surveilance is assumed, and the murder of opposition forces is apparently justified. To them it is like "faith" this "faith" that, but to anyone else, it is just fear culture.

God basically cannot be omnipotent. If he is, there is no need to tell a small group of people to write a long-ass book series for him. He should be able to imprint those teachings into the brains, the DNAs, as living instincts. If we are throwing away our living instincts for someone that we can't even prove exists, then the latter, if existent, is basically a tyrant.

Well I can't say that I am an atheist, but to me, a moral and all-powerful God should never behave like this [redacted] in the bible who calls himself "God".

I would expect a personification of the universe to have bipolar qualities, really. In a way, it seems stranger to me to not expect a personification of the universe to have bipolar qualities. To suppose that a being manifested the world we see around us, and all the rules it operates by - and yet is wholly good.
