I find chess to be more difficult. Probably too many pieces to keep track of simultaneously.
Whilst with poker it’s more sequential.
I do play poker more though, that might be a reason.

I think Chess and Poker are both games that take a lot of strategy. While Poker is about luck sometimes, in pro games, it has a lot to do with bluffing your opponent and trying to make them tap out or keep going. You also have to predict reactions to see whether or not you should back off. It is about determining things based on the odds and outcomes. In Pro games, a lot of people sometimes talk to a person to get in their head. In Chess, you need to analyze something based on calculated moves and best case scenario.

Both are simple games.

The difficult part is learning how to be better than everyone else.

Chess is more difficult to get medium-good at but poker is nearly impossible to be perfectly good at whereas in Chess that's at least theoretically attainable.

Poker is an artform as much as it is a science, Chess is 98% science and logic, 2% art and creativity.

@RatMan.

Poker is the luck of the cards.

The person with the best hand should win.

Not winning depends upon other variables.......Such as money or the supply thereof.

Chess is about memory and anticipation.

I am telling you that poker is a game of skill, not luck in the long run.

The person with the best hand should win.
Wrong. The person with the closest estimation of the opponent's interpretation and intention of bets should win, combined with card odds being involved in said estimations.

@RatMan

I did say "should".

If poker was payed without money, the best hand would win every time.

The game itself is simple.

Having the confidence or stupidity to risk losing money, is the essence of gambling.

In Poker your opponent isn't the house, it's other players. It's not stupidity to risk if you can outplay them over many hands/games.

This is the equivalent to asking, "which one is harder to understand, Literature or Physics?"

I will say it depends. Hellmuth Jr. would find Poker easier and Carlsen would find Chess easier. It depends on what you do all day. If you have more time and opportunity to understanding a subject, it would seem easier to you.

I think Chess, while simpler to play, is the more difficult game. Poker is primarily contingent on the luck of the draw, probabilities which are outside the control of the participants. Yes there are those who are skilled in retaining in their memory the probability of each number and suit, but at the end of the day, one's best or most skilled effort could still result in a loss even against one's worst effort. That doesn't really incorporate much difficulty since much of it is not one's control. On the other hand, the most skilled player wins.

Poker, because sometimes it's real money, and I don't tend to win, and it's difficult, losing money.

For me it's the opposite. Chess is pretty easy for me but I can't compete in first person shooter games or poker.

Poker requires the ability to afford substantial financial risk.

If you've got a pair of two's and a million dollars, you're going to beat a pair of aces and a hundred dollars any day of the week.

Without the money, poker is just a mundane card game.

Whereas a chess set only costs a few dollars.

Poker, at its best  is about being able to read --catch tell-tale-signs--- of what your opponent is holding.

Chess is game of memory of winning moves.

partly, yes.

It is also about estimating how the opponent is reading you and using it against them.

However, on the other side it is odds estimation and statistical analysis at work (and actually this even plays into your reads as you are never reading the specific hand but a range of hands the opponent must have based on playstyle frequency of doing things vs what they've done so far in this hand).

Poker has about the same amount of things too keep up with as chess, such as the types of cards and the different hands you can have and how many points you have. Poker is harder to win at, chess is harder to play.

Poker's technically just a game of probability: probability of winning based on your hand and the cards on the table.

You can approximate a probability of winning much easier than chess. I believe stockfish only has depth 18 (only can see 18 moves into the future)/

So I guess AI isn't even at the level where chess can be fully planned out
