Hello everyone. There was some recent debates about moderation and how to go about moderation. I would like to get a general consensus on how the site feels in general with moderation, policies, bans, etc. These inquiries will help moderation build a better understanding of the community and develop into a prosperous community. Please answer the questions honestly and feel free to give explanations on your answers. These results will be directly submitted to moderators

2) Just right for the most part. I am sure if I dug through the details I would find a few where I say "eh, I would have done a week more or a week less here" but mostly fine and I haven't seen any permabans I strongly disagree with.

4) Lmao, no.

5) I can't think of any myself but I won't say it is impossible.

6) In my experience yes.

7) Kinda feel like this should be a yes for everyone. If you aren't motivated to be part of a voluntary online community that offers no material benefit then just leave, no point in wasting your time.

Maybe you should poll some of the people offsite through facebook or discord about why they don't want to join, I think that would gice you some better answera to 7.

Maybe you should poll some of the people offsite through facebook or discord about why they don't want to join, I think that would gice you some better answera to 7.
Worse, the prepositional phrase is ambiguous

" a part of"
or
"apart from"

you could read either way to produce opposite meanings

Kind of already made my opinions known, but I'll answer anyway.

I know my comments in the other thread seem to indicate the answer would be no, but that is not correct. I think moderation needs reform, but overall, yes I think the current mods overall do very well and I've only seen a couple of instances miss the mark.

I think a week should be the most severe punishment for basically everything but doxxing. Doxxing (depending on the severity) should result in a permaban since it infringes on user safety.

3. Do you believe there should be major changes to the CoC in the future?
YES

I would have to study the CoC more, but in general I assume it is probably fine, otherwise I would have seen more complaints about it. I think there should be some discretion in punishing people over minor CoC violations. The CoC shouldn't be ruled with an iron fist as far as forum activity goes. Most moderation should be done on debates and votes IMO.

Kind of a confusing question, but yes. 1 moderator would give less of an appearance of a "click". I think having so many moderators scares old DDO members away. Not sure how I feel about the advisor discord. It seems that literally everyone on the site is in there. The discussions that happen there could almost just happen right on the forums lol.

I think having one mod and less enforcement of strict rules would attract more mature people to the website. There is a really "young" vibe here, and that kind of goes with the theme of punishing people strictly like they are children.

Probably. Ragnar and virt have good heads on their shoulders, I think they mean well. While I dis-agree with the RM ban, I can at least understand their motives and think they meant well.

If only for the mafia games, which I still enjoy on this website. If more people from the old DDO were here, I might use other parts of the site more. The general age group here feels very young and immature so it's hard for me to form friends as I did on debate.org. But even on DDO I stuck mostly to the games forum. I would like to see this website thrive, I think the owner did a very good job replicating the feel of DDO. I think a few changes to how things run on the mod team and this site could thrive again. The only thing developmentally it needs it group messaging but I think the dev said they were working on that.

  • I think there needs to be a venue for greater debate glory in the short term.  Right now,  when active new debaters win a couple of debates there's not much recognition. 
  • I think the first 10 debates should never count and debaters with less than 10 debates can only debate other debaters with less than 10 debates.  This would help set some expectations before debates start counting and separate the experienced debaters from the one off experimenters, etc.
  • I'd like to see a monthly top ten leaderboard for debater that gives newer users a chance to be on the top of some stats- most debates/most wins/most subscribes/most comments
  • I think we might also motivate more Mafia users if we had a Mafia leaderboard.  games/wins/most likes on endgame, etc.
  • forfeit=automated no vote autoloss.  This would very likely improve the voting dynamics.

I second all of Oro's suggestions except for the #2 and #5 suggestion. I think I would amend his #2 suggestion. I would have the first 3 debates locked into the "unrated" category, and after that, the user gets a medal and it unlocks the option for rated debates.

Taking me for example, my first few debates on the site were spent debating positions on experimental topics against some very talented noob-snipers. My first month or so on DART was rough. Oro was actually one of the big hazers who showed me just how far I needed to catch up in skill and commitment to actually make it on the leaderboard. I'm not complaining, those first few debates of getting my ass kicked really helped me evolve my debate style (Oro especially),  but I felt discouraged seeing it impact my score negatively.

I can see how for many users, after experimenting a bit and being noob-sniped repeatedly while seeing no real gain in momentum, they'd just leave out of disinterest. That probably is the biggest barrier for getting more committed debaters on the site. (Also, consider how many of the committed debaters came from DDO. I'm an exception, and there are others, but it initially feels like a clique that you can't get into.)

Same, would make MEEPs easier too. There's just some infrastructure that would have to be added to make it work. Unfortunately, will likely be a while before we could implement it. It would be a big update, and currently the priority is finishing some aesthetic updates and making a mobile app. Mike has said that Google is punishing the site for not having one
