Out of curiosity, how many of you are interested in having a live debate feature on DebateArt? I know personally I'd like to do more live debates. (If you'd like to do one just let me know.)

@MisterChris
I'd definitely love more live debates.

@MisterChris
I would suck eggs at live debate #coronavirusnormalizedtheintroverts
-->
@oromagi
All the more reason to practice!

@David
@MisterChris
would like to know the idea-goolge hangouts?
-->
@MisterChris
I feel so out of practice actually doing them, but I'd love to dive back in. It's been too long since I've actually done a debate tournament and I'm feeling the itch.
-->
@whiteflame
I feel ya there. Want to do a live debate with me sometime this week?
-->
@MisterChris
Wanna do a zoom conference debate sometime?
-->
@David
Not sure if I can do it this week (at long last, I'm trying to get my dissertation submitted by the end of the week), but we can at least plan a debate. Any of the topics I sent you stand out, or do you have one you'd like to do? I could give you more ideas if not.
-->
@whiteflame
Not really. The organ donation debate I"m doing with bla on Friday
-->
@David
Alright. It's been a while, but I recall that I was sending out a set of topics to people on DDO back in the day that I never got to debate. I'll have to go back and find those, but I should be able to send them to you in the next couple of days.

@David
Oh, and give me a heads up as to when you'll be doing that debate. If it's at a good time, I'd like to watch through and vote in real time.

@whiteflame
10 PM Friday

@David
Is that PST? EST?

@whiteflame
EST

@David
Bleh, that’s a problem. Oh well, I’ll catch the video afterward.

@Dr.Franklin
Not certain, I just want to know if the interest is there. Probably something similar though, I imagine we will need a 3rd party embedded into the site's features. It seems difficult to create our own video streaming system.
-->
@PressF4Respect
I'd be down if we can find a good topic
-->
@whiteflame
I definitely need practice with them, especially since I'm being tossed into the online nationals tournament this year.

What's different in a live debate, other than the vocalization of one's written argument?
I suppose a live debate could show a persons quality, rather than that of his argument.
But what's the necessity of it I mean, unless the 'person, is what one is debating on.
-->
@Lemming
The difference is that in a live debate you are forced to make on-the-spot refutations. You can't just search up the perfect rebuttal on Google. It is a true battle of wits and charisma.
-->
@MisterChris
Did you take part in online nationals tournaments yet, or still upcoming?
-->
@Lemming
I've debated Public Forum, Congress, Lincoln Douglas, and Big Question in the NSDA for the past two years, and I took part in Nationals last year... But this year I quit NSDA. It's a cesspool that I'm glad I got out of. So no, I wasn't able to partake in online nats.
-->
@MisterChris
Well, if you find it a cesspool, for the better I suppose.
Do people on 'this site live debate much, DDO had that Google+ Hangouts link as I recall,
So I make the assumption this site did something similar.
-->
@Lemming
It's more rare here. Some users try to... Namely Virt, Whiteflame and others. Typically what they do is record vids on Hangout or Discord or something and then upload it to youtube. Then they drop that link in debates on the site and ask for votes. I've not tried it yet, although I'm very willing.
-->
@MisterChris
Hm, I don't think I have it together enough in any topics to make decent spur of the moment arguments on them.
Though I suppose that's what preparation is for, before debates.
Hm, then I'm not sure I 'feel strongly enough about any topics, to want to make a case for them, 'forcefully against another.
-->
@Lemming
Yeah, honestly you either love live debate or you hate it. You have to YOLO and give it a shot with a topic you semi-know to really figure out if its something you enjoy doing.
-->
@Lemming
Like I said on your debate, feeling strongly about a topic tends to work against you in live debates when you don't have a choice of side, which is most of competitive debate. There was a time I would have agreed with you and seen the prospect of debating on something I knew nothing about nor had any strong feelings about, but I actually find those to be the more rewarding experiences these days. They force you to dig down into a topic and build an informed opinion from the ground up, and my best debates, whether written or spoken, were always on topics where I didn't feel strongly about the issue going into it.
Like MisterChris said, though, live debating is not something everyone loves. It requires putting yourself out there in a way that written debates don't. I personally think it's a lot more fun than written debates, partly because you don't have a lot of time to put together responses or rebuild your arguments, and partly because there's just so much more I gain from hearing a debate rather than reading it. It's worth giving it a shot and seeing if it's something you enjoy, but I respect your reservations on the matter.

@MisterChris
I agree. Same with me and policy
