"Cities of the Plain" is in the construct state in the Hebrew, which means that the word "cities" has a close association with the word "plain." The cities were not in the plain, or on the plain. If that were the case, a different construction would have been used. Rather, the cities were "of" the plain—they had a close association, or connection, with the plain. They were doubtless dependent upon the plain for their livelihood.

A theory I quite like is that Sodom and Gomorah are cities that were already ruins when the Hebrews discovered them and over time a legendary explanation of them developed - ie that they were destroyed by god because the people who lived there were wicked.  It woudn't take long for people to forget it was a just a story or theory and consider it to be the truth.   The towns identified in the article (Bab edh-Dhra and Numeira) were destroyed before 2000 BCE, ie 5-600 years before the Hebrews occupied the area.

Similarly, cities are recorded in the bible as being destroyed by Joshua's invasion of Canaan but their ruins have been dated to much a much earlier time.

 

I don't know what Biblical timeline your talking about, but the current one for a lot of people is wrong by 300 years, Dating methods for such a long ago event isn't going to be pin point accuracy

Scientific dating methods have been proved accurate by many, many, many cross referenced dating, only willfully ignorant godists question them even though they use similar science to keep their children alive. Proof, if any more was needed, that godists are hypocrites.

It's not my area of expertise.  Most sources I've checked put the destruction of the towns 2000-2300 bce and the Hebrew occuption of Israel (or Joshua's invasion) around 1250 BCE.  I'm not qualified to comment further.
