We won't make America great again. America was never that great.
-NY Governor

America is great. But why is it great?

America differs from other countries in that it is always moving towards the just, the true, the right.

Other countries had to be forced or pressured into doing the right thing. America has always been able to do so on it's own. No matter what wrong we have done, we, and we alone, have recognized it, attacked it, and corrected it.

It's like America has a built in immune system. Women's rights, racism, bigotry, corruption, equality, child welfare, world policing, have all been corrected by us. Sometimes with great turmoil, but we found the way to a more just society. We are great because we have a great system, baked into our country's DNA.

America's greatness is why the poor, the oppressed, the downtrodden, flock to us. This is why Hawaii, and Korea, Panama, Germany, Laos, and Japan are free and prosperous. A lesser country would have just swallowed them up after defeat.

America's greatness is why the world doesn't speak German today but English, and why there is a state of Israel, why Isis and the Taliban have not murdered everyone in the Middle East, and why a poor farmer in Honduras has a smart phone.

Show me another country with a self-healing immune system.

The governor of NY is a blazing idiot. Some have called for his removal, but I say no, let him stay. He is who New Yorkers deserve.

Cuomo's remarks have to be taken in the context of 'Make America Great Again'.  If Trump is right and America is no longer great it raises the issue of when America was great - or if it ever was.

What and when was this 'great America' Trump wants to return to?

When America galloped across the globe kicking Nazi butt, when America pinned ol' glory to the moon like the badass it was, when America give King George the finger and told him to take a flying leap off a short pier, when America took in Jewish Einstein from the moron fascists and Einstein turned out to help create the tool that would guarantee their defeat, when blacks, free to go back to Africa, wisely chose to stay, when America told the USSR to stfo or get banhammered.

When America took in the Poles, Italians, Jews, and Vietnamese and turned them into giants, when America spewed out innovation and world saving technological advances like rain. Like when America told the moron Palestinians that Israel was not theirs, and told moron Europe to pay their own way, and told moron mexico to keep their dregs at home or we would wall them out.

When evil men quaked at the mention of America, and women and children danced for joy at the sight of the mighty marines coming to deliver worlds of butthurt to dictators and despots.

That America. That is what and when.

Idk, going back to Reagan seems like it'd be pretty dope. But, i think the phrase itself is more of a reference to Obama and his foreign policy. Alot of his campaigning had to do with reasserting American dominance

Cuomos speech was him appealing to progressives and Socialists. Who all predominantly hold the opinion America was never great, because like Cuomo in his speech, they compare it to something non-existent and highly implausible.

Yes, America will truly be great when all women are given 100% respect all the time, and everyone is "engaged"(whatever that meant).... and well if we're just making an unrealistic wish list, American will truly be great when everyone has a jacuzzi, a Bougati Veyron, and acts without sin. Oh and crime is zero, and pigs can fly. That's greatness 😰😂

So you'd like an America that doesn't build walls to keep people out nor blocks immigration on the basis of religion?  i agree America was greater in its idealistic past - but is it those days that Trump wants to return to?

In the past America was segregaged by race, made extensive use of slavery and tore itself apart in civil war.  What is a 'great' country'?    I don't think any country has ever been 'great'.   Many countries have been and are worse than the US - but does being better than Chad or Chile make a country 'great'?

I'd agree - Cuomo obviously places the bar for 'greatness' very high.  I think it is useful to do so because it helps us think what our aspirations should be.

Or it's just an excuse to shit on something or someone unrealistically. Cuomo doesnt just place it very high, he places it at an impossible level. While understanding the usefulness of high expectations, being unpragmatic and turning it into a wild goose chase of pure idealism while throwing the pragmatic to the wind is... far from virtuous behavior.

Plus it often falls prey to the, "road to hell is paved with good intentions"

That's pretty accurate of progressives fmpov. Falsely attributing virtue to idealism, then running straight into hell in pursuit of generally well intentioned ideals. 🤔

Cause fmpov, when ideals don't match reality, it seems "i should reconsider how realistic my ideals are" isnt something that generally occurs, rather, oftentimes its reality itself that now has to change. And once you start going down that path, its not too long before *oops* a buncha people are dead 😰

Why must it be all or nothing with you guys? Can I not want legal immigration and not want illegal immigration?  I don't want thugs sneaking across the border.

i agree America was greater in its idealistic past - but is it those days that Trump wants to return to?
Of course. What days did you think Trump wants to return to?

In the past America was segregaged by race, made extensive use of slavery and tore itself apart in civil war.

And America on its own corrected those problems. Did you read the OP? This has been addressed.

What is a 'great' country'?
You have been told.

I don't think any country has ever been 'great'.
We know, that is why America will wallow in mediocrity as long as liberals are in power.

Many countries have been and are worse than the US - but does being better than Chad or Chile make a country 'great'?
This is the kind of comment that makes it difficult not to insult you. The OP's premise was that America was great because it was designed at its birth with an immune system built in.

You ignore that and pretend the premise is, "America is greater than Chad." Nowhere in this thread have I used the phrase "greater than....". If you disagree with the thread's premise, address that, but don't substitute it and pretend it is something else. Where is your integrity?

America's history of regime change and foreign electoral interventions say otherwise. We've supported dictatorships and authoritarian governments when it fits our interests, such as Saudi Arabia and many Latin American regimes, but invade their countries when they don't. Our military ventures into Iraq have resulted in 1 million dead Iraqis, for instance. It's quite rare for the US to apologize for its misdoings overseas, of which there are very many.

America deserves credit where it's due, but this chauvinist ideology will not get America anywhere close to being "great".

Says otherwise what? Many of the regime changes America helped bring about were good. It freed people and got rid if dictators.

We've supported dictatorships and authoritarian governments when it fits our interests, such as Saudi Arabia and many Latin American regimes,
Are you proposing we act against our interests?

but invade their countries when they don't.

That is what our military is for. When diplomacy fails.

Our military ventures into Iraq have resulted in 1 million dead Iraqis, for instance.
So what? Our military ventures into Germany have resulted in 1 million dead Germans, for instance. So what?

It's quite rare for the US to apologize for its misdoings overseas, of which there are very many.
You are liberal, and what you call "misdoings" are not necessarily actual misdoings.

America deserves credit where it's due, but this chauvinist ideology will not get America anywhere close to being "great".
Basically, you are acting like your liberal take is established fact. It isn't. The world saw America as great, and will again. America only needs to rid itself of the silly politically correct progressive doctrine.

"road to hell is paved with good intentions"
Would not like to live in a world where most of humanity only 'bad intentions', would you?

What were the intentions of humans that came to land of the free and chased away, or killed so many native indian's, and proceeded to place the surviving native indians on reservations in some of poorest agriculture land.

The first Spanish colonies, in the land of the free, occurred 125 years before the British and they had indian and black slaves, but believed those peoples have souls ergo allowed those slaves to buy their freedom and the Spanish priests performed marriages for all peoples of any color.

The initial British arriving in the land of the free, were quite the opposite i.e. a much more inhumane set of people.

In the words of Senator McCains daughter, America is already great, and does not need to be made 'great again'.

Thank you Megan, that will be all idio-ump{ humpty-dumpty }

Ahh shucks, dont make me blush.

Thanks for your kind words, even if they were not intentional.

Make USA greater by moving it towards all inclusive, one-world, spaceship Earth nation.

To divide and conquer is what humans have practiced for many years.

Global awareness has also been known for many years now.

Humanity has not passed its final examination as globally integrated { unified } society.

If not all-for-one and one-for-all,  --see fat <> middle class--  then humanity will fail its existence on Earth.

We came close to that in 70's and 80's but humanity choose mind forward over butt forward evolution.

Humanity will need to do that many more times in other circumstances to survive another 500 - 1000 years.

Even if humanity unifies, there is not gurrantee of their ability to solve the self-induced ecological problems coming or natural ecological circumstances that will occur sooner or later.

Women's rights, racism, bigotry, corruption, equality, child welfare, world policing, have all been corrected by us

The OP makes a lot of empty claims and Ethan, as usual, provides no valid or credible sources to back them up.

Even his one point; Racism, is destroyed by this article.

Structural racism and myocardial infarction in the United States

We don't even need to talk about Trump's views on women or the fact he puts children in cages. That's all been corrected, eh Ethan?

I travel the world, and every country I go to, the US embassy is clogged with people wanting to come here.

Go to any nightclub in any city in the world and its American music the young are gyrating to.

Ask blacks if they'd like to leave and they will call you a fool.

The women and the children continue to flow into the country.

See, I don't need silly emotional arguments based on political correctness. I watch what real people are doing in the real world.

America is a wonderful place, that is why the world wants to come here, and why you want to destroy it.

First of all, you claim to live in Ghana, is that also a lie?

No one cares about your alleged travels, you have yet to put a single source for your usual over the top claims.

Also? Lol. Yeah, cause a claim of living in Ghana is a social booster.

No one cares about your alleged travels
Except the people who ask, and people like you who have never traveled.

you have yet to put a single source for your usual over the top claims.
Lol. You think travelling is an "over the top" claim? And what, I should post an airline ticket? Petty much?

Plenty of hot air, though.
My guess is you've never been in an airplane if you think a claim of travel is a boast. Traveling is a form of education, so it fits that you haven't. People like you tend not to want to go anywhere anyway.

... living in Ghana is a social booster.

So, a lie then?

you who have never traveled
I have, extensively, probably far more than you. So what. You're claims remain empty.

"over the top" claim?
You make them all the time, empty, vacuous claims that are over the top silly. "There are no amputees - There are no gay animals - The Bible is a book of science" Remember those hilarious claims?

you've never been in an airplane
I can fly an airplane, I used to work at the airport while in high school and traded my pay for flight training. I have a trophy for a flour bombing contest. Any other vacuous claims about me you wish to provide?

Or, can we go back to the OP where you made a bunch of vacuous claims that you have yet to still provide any support? Anything at all?

Find someone interested in your over the top silly claims.

Sorry. I could not care less.
