I am going to upgrade to a new computer within a few months depending on when it feels right. My current computer has issues and is lacking in the performance that I desire from a computer. Please do not try to persuade me to a specific brand because I am only sticking with Apple. It's what I am comfortable with and used to, and Apple computers are good enough.

If you have any thoughts about what type of Macbook I should get, do share. I prefer the Pro versions over the Air models because of the better internal hardware and additional ports. I want to buy one that I plan on keeping for many years, and its performance should be acceptable for many years.
I basically have to balance the ratio of performance : money.

One that I have landed on is the 2021 MacBook Pro, M1 Pro Chip, 16 GB Ram, 512 GB. The price is around $1,000, most likely a bit more. I think its power would be more than enough for what I want and need, and the price doesn't seem too bad. What do you guys think?

@WyIted
How does the cpu stack up to a M1 Pro chip? Or if you don't mind telling me, what type of computer do you have?

If you play games, go for 32 gb RAM.

The games in future will require more than 16 gb RAM for best performance, and its not even a distant future. We are talking about few years.

Also, 1000$ for only 16 gb RAM seems way too much.

Have you tried online shopping?

Have you considered buying used computer instead of new?

I dont know much about MacBook, never had one. But computers and laptops of 16 gb RAM dont cost 1000$.
You can get 32gb RAM laptop for less than 1000$ on Amazon.

I dont know if Apple maybe makes better use of its RAM, but from what I know, software can be used to clean RAM, but it cant really be used to add more RAM. Windows has paging file which acts as additional RAM, but it can never match actual RAM in performance.

So unless Apple knows something the rest of us dont, I dont see how they can make more use out of 2x less RAM.

Apple does same with their smartphones. Always more expensive, but always less RAM and smaller camera than in other brands.

So to cut the cost, try buying used Macbook with 32 gb RAM.

Or maybe find better offer for new computer online.

What you have found is way too expensive for only 16 gb, and since you mention RAM, I assume you need it for games or some high demanding programs.

Today, you can get 32 gb RAM laptop for 500$ to 800$ on amazon.

I have spent 250$ on 8gb laptop years ago, but now 16gb new laptop is about 300$.

If you are buying used computer, its even less.

Notebook laptops and smaller laptops can be found for even cheaper price for same RAM, but you have to accept smaller screen size.

As for computers, they should be even cheaper than laptops.

So I dont know how 16 gb RAM can cost 1000$ unless you live in some area where prices are generally high.

Thanks for recommending I get a computer with 32 gb ram. When I looked at Amazon, the MacBooks from 2020 and 2019 were about half the price of the one I was looking at which is not that much newer--ridiculous. And I was looking at older ones that had twice as much ram in them. Your point of future-proofing my computer's gaming abilities is a pretty valid point, and I believe you when you say we are just years away from 32 gb ram being the optimal standard for computer gaming

Plenty of new games already have minimum 8gb RAM requirement.

But to get most out of them, you need at least 16 GB RAM.

I am guessing in 3 or 4 years, many good games will be with 16 gb minimum requirement, but you will need 32 gb to actually have good frame rate and graphics.

Dont forget graphic card too, but I think computers with 32gb RAM should come with very good graphic card.
