“Believing crazy things is not the mark of whether somebody should be rejected,” Vance said in a 2021 speech to the conservative Teneo Network that was recently published by ProPublica. “Believing important truths should be the mark of whether we accept somebody, and if they believe some crazy things on the side, that’s fine. We need to be okay with nonconventional people.”

What's wrong about believing important truths?

if they believe some crazy things on the side, that’s fine. We need to be okay with nonconventional people
Why are small minds so critical of this. Why were the Wright brothers wrong tor believing this crazy thing that they could fly?

Adherence to cultural norms and conceptual orthodoxy is already too strong a temptation in humanity (see hundreds of thousands of years of essentially zero progress), it doesn't need to be encouraged. I have no problem with this purported Vance quote.

In truth I reject the axis as relevant entirely. If you're taking the time to consider something "crazy" you may as well use reason instead of spending time wondering just how popular or unpopular it is.

No flat earth argument was ever defeated with "you're a weirdo".

It's basically saying he has values that are unpopular....because they are not based on populism.....  That's basically stating the definition of a strongly held belief.

Today, the true measure between a crazy belief and a normal belief is a simple calculus of propaganda. (see dick chopping for minors)

I would advance that it's always been that way, but it was less obvious in times of consensus.

By "that way" I mean people have for the most part always believed what they were told and not critically (rationally) examined claims from their own tribe (family, nation, team, etc...) for errors nor seen if they could find an error in rival tribe's claims.

Those who believed in some kind of baseline "common sense" built into the human mind that kept the normal people more or less in line with each other were always wrong, and the fact that "suddenly" 20% of the population is fine with child-dick-chopping is their bad theory about humanity hitting painful reality.

@Wylted, what happened to the intuition of the dick-choppers?

I say there never was any intuition but the programming of peers, in this case (and in large civilizations in general) as organized by the propagandists.

In JD Vance, Trump has picked a mini-me offering red meat to his Maga base.

Wylted had a really nice 1 hour speech on the philosophical value of instinctual truths vs propaganda truths. On discord.

I can't get to discord, but if he put it on his youtube channel...

My preliminary question would be: if propaganda 'truth' is in fact false (some of the time), is instinctual truth always true? If instinctual truth is actual truth then how do you distinguish instinctual truth from propaganda "truth"?

No flat earth argument was ever defeated with "you're a weirdo".
This guy looks defeated:

Really it's only practical to clown people with clown beliefs or assertions. The vast majority of people are only ever going on appearances anyway and real science and expertise is advantaged here in that real and fruitful innovation pays for uniforms and positions and titles and big offices from which to speak authoritively. Meanwhile the flat earthers and anti-vaxxers are in their kitchens brandishing melons. Surely they feel foolish already.

You're wasting your time engaging in earnest with these clowns. They don't understand the science. Very few people can and fewer people have the time to. I mean, not that flat earth is so hard to refute, but vaccines is definitely a trickier issue. It's just perfectly practical to put your trust in the guys with the white suits. In the scientific consensus of a million guys in white suits who earned those suits by being actually useful members of society.

The black sheep of my family was an anti-vaxxer. He was an anti-vaxxer because it suited him, he felt pushed out already. This gave him a way to whine about it on Facebook. Sad sack politics. The American right I'm guessing the masks felt a bit too much like gags for their big dumb mouths. They just want to say "nigger" real bad and this was one more impediment. There's no reasoning or getting through to these clowns. Their politics exists in a different reality. But you might make them feel foolish for it. If nothing else, that's fun.

My instinctual reaction is to think about how weird it is that you guys spend so much time thinking about and being politically motivated by what other people are doing with their genitals.

Stealing from and defrauding people also pays for that. See the nazis.

Yea, that's what they said before the first civil war too... whip those yankees and be back in time for supper; such fun....

Truth will out. It doesn't need so much help from the average person. Just for us to recognise the idiots and not give them the mic.

Stealing from and defrauding people also pays for that. See the nazis.
Who will appear as Nazis. The mass of virologists and immunologists with all their years of study and publications and proven usefulness to society ain't that.

Well the idiots say the same thing.

It's pretty clear you want to talk about vaccines, but the point was more abstract.

There was a time when talking about cellular biology was something only a wierdo would do.

It's far less of an ask of the general public to recognise an idiot than to weigh all of the arguments themselves. I take a sensible civic duty in that.

It's pretty clear you want to talk about vaccines, but the point was more abstract.
You want to talk about what you want to talk about. COVID anti-vaxx in America was the most egregious instance of science denial in modern times.

There was a time when talking about cellular biology was something only a wierdo would do
Truth will out. Doesn't detract at all from what I'm saying.

Which might be a legitimate point of it were not completely made up.

Like I said, it's just weird. And you guys only make it weirder when you try to justify it with made up nonsense, all that does is make it even clearer that you don't in fact have any good reason for your apparent obsession.

Every time I say to myself, "At least it can't get any weirder", and I just keep being wrong, it's like watching a decade long Fellini movie.

That's the problem with MAGA, they have their TV game show president and it's all about the show, it's performance over policy, ratings over results, all they want is good television.  The world can go to hell in a handbasket as long as it's entertaining.

But over here in the real world, there is more to it than entertainment, it has grave consequences, you can't just turn the TV off and it doesn't matter.

Did you even read a single link you provided?

Not a single one has anything to do with dick chopping, and the worst most representative link you provided has to do with schools not being allowed to tell parents what pronouns their kids prefer. I don't think I agree with CA's policy on that, but it's insane how many times right wingers bring this up. Do you seriously have nothing better to do with yourselves and nothing more important to voter for?
