It turns out the republicans have a consistent ethos.

If you study the philosophy of John Adam's you could probably better understand Republicans like George Bush. https://theimaginativeconservative.org/2017/10/conservatism-john-quincy-adams-sean-mattie-timeless.html

For paleoconservatives start reading Pat Buchanan's books

For libertarians, study Hayek

I tried to pick the lowest hanging easiest to understand stuff for each branch of conservatism

@wylted
he focuses on two political causes taken up by Adams—nationalism and anti-slavery
Virtually everyone is anti-slavery.  Virtually everyone is nationalistic to some extent.

As president, Adams proposed extensive internal improvements at federal expense, the sale of public land only sparingly and at premium prices, protective tariffs, federal support for scientific advancement, and a national university—all to promote a national republic.
This sounds very left wing.

is to recall—not to invent—the country’s principles, and to apply and defend them in the flux of human opinion and material circumstances
Which principles?

” Accordingly, conservatism is defined by its opposition to radical ideas and enthusiastic, immediate programs to perfect human nature in the rearrangement of society.[4] Yet Adams subscribed to and acted on behalf of all of these conservative propositions.
So Status quo defending.

Stagnant ethos maybe?

In a progressive Universe?

The species didn't get where it is today by being stagnant.

I think that there is an inbuilt anti-stagnancy function.

It's just that progression is a slow process.

Virtually everyone is anti-slavery.  Virtually everyone is nationalistic to some extent.

Dude, look at the underlying philosophy to help him reach that conclusion, and no democrats are not generally anti slavery. Free shit usually involves compelling a certain portion of somebody's labor. Some doctors are worth $200k a year. Socialized medicine would steal some of their labor so it would likely go down to 125k a year but let's be conservative and say 150k a year, not to mention the taxation on the rest of our labor to support free riders.

All of these social programs are a form of slavery so no not everyone is against it, they just pretend they are and obfuscate it away by pretending like slavery is fine if you are helping the poor, paying for more administration at a school to employ previously unemployable women etc.

Honestly you need to dig into the underlying philosophy to see why a person came to certain conclusions and how to apply that philosophy to new things you are seeing that Adam's never saw in his lifetime.

This sounds very left wing.
It's not and it has never been a simple as

Democrats = support for public spending except police and military

Republicans = opposition to public spending except police and military

Republicans even modern Republicans have supported public spending. Trump passed a huge infrastructure bill to spend billions making sure bridges didn't collapse, among other things. George Bush spent a lot of federal funding on trying to reform schools so America could be more competitive globally, he also passed a huge stimulus bill that refunded most ordinary are people some of their tax money and another stimulus bill for banks and car makers.

This extremely simplistic view you have just doesn't translate to the real world.

So Status quo defending.

Not necessarily. Conservatives are not generally anti change or anti progress. Not Adam's inspired conservatives anyway. They just utilize a cautious type of thinking. While progressives go full steam ahead, Adam's conservatives want to make sure that a change is actual progress. This is why many push for states rights.

If we have state rights we can have 50 different tests in each state and pick the policy that achieves the best long term results. This is in fact why many conservatives secretly supported the ACA but wanted to see it modeled after the example that Romneys implementation of a similar measure in his state.

Look up "Chesterton's post" as a type of example of conservative thinking.

Socialized medicine merely makes doctors government employees.  I don’t agree with UHC, but it wouldn’t enslave doctors.

Republicans = opposition to public spending except police and military
If I was using your logic, then I would call high military spending the same as slavery.

What made conventional slavery bad was it was basically a 100% tax on poor people and the poor people weren’t allowed to leave their area.  That, and the inevitable rape and lack of rights that often came with slavery.  To compare the globalists paying a higher tax rate to slavery is an insult to the people that actually endured slavery.

Either you want the globalists to pay more in taxes or you support the globalists.
