If you could only do one:

  1. Prevent one zygote from dying from abortion
  2. Prevent one child from dying from starvation
Then what do you pick and why?

Zygote has high chance of dying even without abortion. So saving zygote from abortion might not actually result in person being born and living a life.

Starvation is a more painful way to go, but the zygote may have a few more years to live. But then I have to account for the possibility of a miscarriage and infant mortality, and both of those mean it's probably better to save the child from dying from starvation.

No. 2 because a zygote cannot think.

What color is the zygote?
a zygote is typically colorless, as it is a single cell and not visible to the naked eye

The DNA in a Zygote predicts it's skin color. I think this is what Greyparrot is asking.

Absolutely the child, starvation is more painful, and the zygote isn't even conscious

So do you believe killing is the same thing as letting die?  Because letting the child starve to death is letting die whereas killing the zygote is killing.

If the 2 were equivalent, then not feeding a starving homeless person and then him dying would lead to a murder charge if letting die is the same as killing.

In the original case, you said "prevent one zygote from dying from abortion," so I assumed someone else is getting the abortion and I just have the option of stopping them. If I'm the one getting the abortion in this scenario, then yes, direct killing is more unjustifiable.

Overthink.

I would suggest that everything is normal and natural relative to a purposeful or purposeless material sequence.

And typically a bunch of blokes arguing the toss over a hypothetical zygote.

Give the kid something to eat FFS.

Good point.
If you didn't have to choose one, would you consider both as having the same value?

That's a good question. I still think the child is more valuable because of the fact it is conscious.

I used to be 8.  This doesn’t mean an 8 year old is the same as a 21 year old.  Try getting the 8 year old to do Calculus.

You gain value as you develop.

But does an older age mean more value?

We're not talking about what is the same broadly speaking. We're talking about value.

I asked this specifically to this other individual.

"If you didn't have to choose one, would you consider both as having the same value?"

I didn't ask about being the same, I asked same value.

If you say no, then there's a conflict.

Depends.  Intrinsically; no.  Extrinsically, yes (unless retired).

"If you didn't have to choose one, would you consider both as having the same value?"
No.  8 year olds have to be in taxpayer funded school for less remaining time than the zygote, so they are therefore less of an economic burden.

But also, the child as already experienced eight years of life, and the zygote never got to. But then again, you don't miss what you never knew.
