We all know the longest serving Republican Speaker of the House was a serial child molester of boys when he was a coach of a high school wrestling team.

He went to jail for paying hush money years latter to one of his victims.

Hastert pleaded guilty to violating banking law as he sought to pay $3.5 million to someone referred to in court papers only as Individual A to keep the sex abuse secret.

Hastert was jailed for “structuring” his bank withdrawals. He withdrew money in increments just below the 10,000 dollar mandatory reporting limit to avoid scrutiny by law enforcement. This is a crime.

Trump also took steps to avoid scrutiny by mischaracterizing his hush money payments as “legal fees”

Making “structuring” a crime is incredibly powerful tool for prosecutors, by indicting people simply for having secrets. In some ways — if the allegations are true — the Hastert case is proof that the system works, and can bring criminals to justice even if the original crimes can no longer be proven or prosecuted.
