If my spouse dies, I might end up at Mt Athos! In fact, both of us are on the same page about this. We will become monastics if the other dies.

Mt. Athos is amazing, but if I would retire to another country it would be the Portuguese Azores, probably Pico or São Miguel. Perfect climate, jaw-dropping, rugged beauty, strongly Catholic, and very old-fashioned and decent. The strain of Catholicism there is very pastoral and far more 'mystic' than the more Scholastic interpretation, which is the most appealing side of the Church for me. The people are also very kind and simple. Plus Portuguese is a very beautiful language which I am in the process of learning.

Japan. They seem like good people. Whenever I have Asian neighbor's they mind their business and keep to thenselves, so I would not mind libing in an entire neighborhood of people like that.

Very true. I do have Korean neighbors too and they mind their business as well. But I think it is a cultural thing where they don't talk to people not Asian. When ur neighbor is Asian along with you, it could be very different. It is a part of their culture

As one gets older one becomes more aware cooler temperatures.
Wales is never particularly warm.
I could afford to retire to Spain or Portugal.
But I'm too set in my ways.
My advice is:
Find your perfect niche whilst you're still young.
Factoring in the necessities for a comfortable retirement.
Sunshine and warmth will be key factors.

If one is purely an indoor person, cooler temperature isn't so bad I'd suppose,
But I like the outdoors a fair bit myself.
Could be interesting to move to a place near a mountain I'd think,
Travel up, gets cold,
Travel down, gets warm.
Not sure about my future,
Maybe home of residence 'always be the Oregon coast,
Maybe try traveling some,
Maybe try eastern Oregon,
Maybe consider cheapest location in the USA,
Though other countries 'do sound nice, I very much like the idea of 'home.

I would suggest that home is where one needs to be warm, especially as one ages.
And here in the UK, heating costs have risen significantly over the past few years.
In my job I visit elderly people, and it is now all too apparent that very few can afford to heat their properties during the daytime.
They rely on dressing in outdoor clothing to stay warm, or even staying in bed when things get really cold.
Mountains are great, but just consider how much time you spend up and down mountains, compared to how much time you spend at home.
And do you think that you will spend more time up and down mountains when you retire?

Be healthy to go up and down mountains I'd think,
Though some people say going downhill can be hard on their knees, so I'm unsure,
Hm, maybe a nice mountain with 'easy slopes.
