Round 1
Thank you, type1!
Wild Horses - Rolling Stones/Charlotte Martin
Childhood living is easy to doThe things you wanted I bought them for youGraceless lady you know who I amYou know I can't let you slide through my handsWild horses couldn't drag me awayWild, wild horses couldn't drag me awayI watched you suffer a dull aching painNow you've decided to show me the sameNo sweeping exit or offstage linesCould make me feel bitter or treat you unkindWild horses couldn't drag me awayWild, wild horses couldn't drag me awayI know I've dreamed you a sin and a lieI have my freedom but I don't have much timeFaith has been broken tears must be criedLet's do some living after we dieWild horses couldn't drag me awayWild, wild horses we'll ride them some dayWild horses couldn't drag me awayWild, wild horses we'll ride them some day
Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones is one of my favourite songs. I chose the version by Charlotte Martin because I feel that it is unique in her arrangement. The piano accompaniment is stunning, her voice is stunning, and the a capella vocals bring an interesting timbre to this song.
People who know me wouldn't expect me to say this, but I liked that song. There is something about that song which has a positive vibe yet "fractured" so to speak. It's as if something has been lost by the artist or maybe they are trying to hold onto someone who is slipping away. It's hard to say exactly what it's about but that is the general vibe I am getting.
I am mostly a rap fan, my second favorite genre is classical and my third is a tie between metal and "tribal" music such as Native American, Peruvian and African. As such, I will use 2 raps in this debate, one classical, one metal, and one "tribal" piece.

Round 2
Thank you, type 1. I have not honestly got a chance to listen to rap and to explore it and want to thank you for posting that. I found it to be quite interesting.
For this round, I've chosen the aria "Nessun Dorma" from the opera Turandot. I've chosen the version sung by Luciano Pavarotti
There's truly something to be said about being able to be on stage (often times without a microphone), project across a full house and a full orchestra. To sing this aria well, one really needs to have the emotion that the story is trying to convey. This aria is from the final act of Turandot. In order to gain the love of the princess, the character must answer three riddles correctly. If he fails, he is beheaded.
Tu pure, o Principessa
Nella tua fredda stanza
Guardi le stelle che tremano
D'amore e di speranza!
Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me
Il nome mio nessun saprà!
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò
Quando la luce splenderà!
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà
Il silenzio che ti fa mia!
ll nome suo nessun saprà
E noi dovrem, ahimè! Morir! Morir!
Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle!
Tramontate, stelle! All'alba vincerò!
Vincerò! Vincerò!
Translation
None shall sleep,
None shall sleep!
Even you, oh Princess,
In your cold room,
Watch the stars,
That tremble with love
And with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
My name no one shall know,
No... no...
On your mouth, I will tell it,
When the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win!
I will win!
I will win!
None shall sleep!
Even you, oh Princess,
In your cold room,
Watch the stars,
That tremble with love
And with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
My name no one shall know,
No... no...
On your mouth, I will tell it,
When the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win!
I will win!
I will win!
That was a very good piece, you could really tell the singer was feeling it towards the end. The look on his face, a look of triumph and relief.
This is a piece I have enjoyed since I was a child. When I listen to it, it makes me think of the universe and the battle of life and order VS entropy and decay.
Requiem for a dream (classical)
Round 3
Requiem for a dream has always been one of my favorites. Good choice!
I’ll now move to a more soulful feel. Aretha Franklin was named the best singer in history by Rolling Stones magazine. This video is proof of that. I’ve always loved jazz and the old spiritual singer. Here’s “People Get Ready.”
People, get ready
There's a train a-coming
You don't need no ticket
You just get on board
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels humming
Don't need no ticket
You just thank the Lord
People get ready
For the train to Jordan
Picking up passengers
From coast to coast
Faith is the key
Open the doors and board them
There's room for all
Amongst the loved the most
There ain't no room
For the hopeless sinner
Who would hurt all mankind
Just to save his own
Have pity on those
Whose chances are thinner
'Cause there's no hiding place
From the kingdom's throne
So people get ready
For the train a-comin'
You don't need no ticket
You just get on board
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels humming
Don't need no ticket
You just thank the Lord
I'm getting ready
I'm getting ready
This time I'm ready
This time I'm ready
I'm getting ready
Getting ready, oh yeah
I'm getting ready, yes I am
A highly vocal performance.
Season for assault- 8 foot Sativa (metal)
It's the season for bleeding
The season for eternal death
You were born for this reason
As I cut your lungs last breath
Overlooking I see your soul
I'll steal your thoughts
Consume your mind
Devouring. I'll fuck your brain
You can't hide from me don't run from me
I'll reach in and break your spine
Your ruptured organs feed the divine
He created your soul. Your heart is mine
You can't hide from me don't run from me
The season for a lost life
Pleasure. Virgins sacrifice
You'll break. It's the season for assault
The season for a lost life
Pleasure. Virgins sacrifice
You'll break. It's the season for assault
I'll infect your soul with staples of hate
Don't try to save yourself from this it's too late
No-one can salvage you from your fate
You can't hide from me don't run from me
Desperate cries you scream in pain
Nobody hears you're led asstray
Broken and torn you'll obey
You can't hide from me don't run from me
Round 4
Josh Groban - River
This is is a brand new song by Josh Groban. Just released a day ago.
Some days I can't say why I'm feeling lonely
And some days I am too proud to ask for help
And I stumble through the noise trying to find some peace
A stranger in the crowd, I lose myself
So I walk down to the river
Where the troubles, they can't find me
Let the waters there remind me
The sun will be there when we wake
I walk down to the river
Though I might not understand it
It's not always as we planned it
But we grow stronger when we break
So I walk down to the river
I walk down to the river
This raging world can get so overwhelming
Looking for a meaning when it won't make sense
In my head it's getting loud like I can't outrun this cloud
No matter where I go well there I am
So I walk down to the river
Where the troubles, they can't find me
Let the waters there remind me
The sun will be there when we wake
I walk down to the river
Though I might not understand it
It's not always as we planned it
But we grow stronger when we break
So I walk down to the river
I walk down to the river
Let the calm pull me under
Far beyond the thunder
And tell me it will all be okay
Let the waves take all my worries
Conquer them with fury
Give me shelter, be my escape
I walk down to the river
Where the troubles, they can't find me
Let the waters there remind me
The sun will be there when we wake
I walk down to the river
Though I might not understand it
It's not always as we planned it
But we grow stronger when we break
So I walk down to the river
I walk down to the river
I walk down to the river
I walk down to the river, to the river
To the river
I walk down, oh oh oh oh
To the river, oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Forfeited
Round 5
The Moon's a Harsh Mistress
See her how she flies
Golden sails across the sky
Close enough to touch
But careful if you try
Though she looks as warm as gold
The moon's a harsh mistress
The moon can be so cold
Once the sun did shine
Lord, it felt so fine
The moon a phantom rose
Through the mountains and the pines
And then the darkness fell
And the moon's a harsh mistress
It's so hard to love her well
I fell out of her eyes
I fell out of her heart
I fell down on my face
Yes, I did, and I, I tripped and I missed my star
God, I fell and I fell alone, I fell alone
And the moon's a harsh mistress
And the sky is made of stone
The moon's a harsh mistress
She's hard to call your own
